Okay, so it’s deeply unfashionable, aimed largely at pensioners and much of the humour is at times obvious and contrived, but is there not an argument for suggesting “Last Of The Summer Wine” is the best sitcom currently on TV?

It’s one of the few comedies that understands the idea of “characters” in that each one has a clearly defined personality and their actions are consistent in a way that gives them depth and emotional resonance. The plots, although deliberately silly, are well-written so that each episode moves along at a gentle yet insistent pace to a proper climax. And even if you don’t care for the comedy, the scenery is superb.

Perhaps most of all, “Last Of The Summer Wine” is strangely reassuring. Most of us fear old age, worrying that it may consist of little more than loneliness, illness and being abandoned by one’s friends or relatives. The hope that instead it might be about companionship, getting up to daft adventures and growing old disgracefully is actually quite comforting.

What do you think?

I like watching Last of the Summer Wine, its relaxing. I love it when the characters are out of sight, and their voices drift up over a humock or hill ... just talking a load of nonsense like friend do with time on the hands, and yes the scenery is lovely.

After Songs of Praise it is less depressing so that is good. Personally I am not too much of a fan of Sunday teatime telly (or much else on telly for that mater).

I've always liked Last of the Summer Wine since being a young kid. I must admit though that the best years were the Compo years, to me it hasn't been as funny since he died. Funny you should start a thread on it though Basil, I was watching it earlier on UKTV Gold :D

Compo was so funny! Shame it's not quite as good as it used to be...used to love it when the woman from the antiques shop used to be in it as well, she did make me laugh.

It seems to be the 'last stop' for many big name celebrities now.
