View Full Version : Phil Collins Is A Gorilla?
I loathe Phil Collins, but this advert is a corker.
I'm still trying to work out if the gorilla is computer generated - its facial movements are so subtle. I love the slightly edgy camera work as he's psyching himself up, it creates real tension.

Swan_Vesta 06-09-2007, 21:16 I saw this and loved it. It's a brilliant piece of media.

Brill:hihi::hihi::hihi::hihi::hihi::hihi:
I saw that the other night and thought it was hilarious my GF looked at me like I was mad. Glad some other people liked it!
When that advert came on my boyfriend said it was just like him when he's stressed. And he has a point, when he's kind of frowning and breathing in and out, and then doing that thing with his shoulders, up until the bit with the drums it's uncanny :)
Ghosthunter 07-09-2007, 19:31 its nice to see Bollo has got some work in between DJ'ing at Fabric!
If only Phil Collins had as much hair, eh?

Or showed as much passion on the kit. He's the Tim Henman of drummers.
Tim Henman of drummers hmmmmmm a very successful solo and group Singer/drummer and winner of two Academy Awards.
Agent Gypo 08-09-2007, 00:32 Tim Henman of drummers hmmmmmm a very successful solo and group Singer/drummer and winner of two Academy Awards.
Succesful in terms of record sales. Which counts nothing towards artistic merit.
And since when are the Academy Awards a reflection of quality?
BurntSausage 08-09-2007, 08:21 Was a good drummer, once.
BurntSausage 08-09-2007, 08:22 Now the thought of Mr Collins fills me with "the fear".:gag:
 after watching this, i guess Phil has lost it :banana::headbang:NOT http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=diG6t73diSoI don't see many of you on a world tour :suspect:

Bland, boring, characterless pap.
Here's McEnroe kicking seven shades of Shinola out of Tim Henman using a pair of sticks and a cheap 8-piece kit (notice he needs neither a rack of effects pedals nor a second drummer ;)).

Who are you referring to?
Who are you referring to?Keith Moon :P
back on the ad... LOVE IT! genius, makes me laugh every time. i'd like to know if it's computer generated too?? wonder if it's first in a series of cadbury ad's?
Mattenmurg 10-09-2007, 11:21 Does it make you want to go buy chocolate tho? I love it anyways.
banesmabes 10-09-2007, 12:38 It's great to watch, but I don't really understand the concept behind it. What's it got to do with chocolate?
affirm18 10-09-2007, 14:07 Nothing to do with chocolate banesmabes, its just a gimmick, but quite a good one. I loved it when i 1st saw it the other night. Wish it would have been longer, they could do it with another song! "The Stranglers" - Nice and sleazy?
i'd like to know if it's computer generated too??
The chances are it's both CGI and a man in a suit. The close ups and facial animation are likely to be CGI whilst the wide shots are man in a suit.
pitsmoorlad 10-09-2007, 14:32 It's great to watch, but I don't really understand the concept behind it. What's it got to do with chocolate?
It doesn't have anything to do with chocolate, but already people are talking about "That gorilla advert". Now as long as people can relate the advert to Cadbury's, then its done the trick. There's been adverts in the past that are memorable but nobody remembers the name of the product. I think it's hilarious, although I already eat Cadbury's choc.
Its surrealist for sure and as such that seems to be a very popular thing at the moment in mass media. I don't think its very good though. Its not a wtf thing. I understand it I just don't know how to put it in words.
I suppose the very fact that most people when asked if they've seen the ad seem to say that they love it, "but I don't know what it has to do with Cadbury's chocoloate" means it's succeeded.
:huh:Died on September 7 1978 of an accidental overdose of pills he had been prescribed to control his alcoholism :gag: great example to kids today
Jonny boy, the original comment referred specifically to Phil Collins's general lack of passion and charisma when playing - The Henman Factor. His unsuitability as a role model to children is utterly irrelevant. You may as well use as an argument against "Keith Moon was a mesmerising drummer" the reply "Yeah, but he didn't like Kraft cheese slices". :nono: I wouldn't let Johnny Rotten babysit my daughter but it has nothing to do with the fact that he has infinitely more charisma, dynamism and sheer excitement as a performer than Cliff Richard.
funkyukgal 23-09-2007, 02:27 Banesmabe - i was thinking the same thing! What does a gorilla playing drums got to do with chocolate?!
Yes i dont think much of the advert but OH thiinks its funny and likes his face expressions! Im guessing the advert appeals more to guys than gals....?
The actual person in the gorilla suit is a actor named Goran Mitchell and he admits he cannot even play the drums
muddycoffee 23-09-2007, 08:54 There is a glaring error when comparing that gorilla to phil collins.
Phil collins is left handed and plays the drums left handed.

And the gorilla has a lot more hair and a little more charisma.

I thinks it got to be 'savouring the moment' like your supposed to when you eat choc! waiting....anticipating....like the old flake advert then ramming it down your throat!!!
:D

Doubt he would even donate two flying monkeys to artistic merit while he's sipping Krug in Switzerland and framing his next bank statement.

Lindseyw 16-10-2007, 08:54 Does it make you want to go buy chocolate tho? I love it anyways.
No, not at all, but it did make me buy his new greatest hits album !!!
missmode 16-10-2007, 09:37 Yeah I noticed that other night they showed the Cadburys ad followed by one for his Greatest Hits album. Cant be doing him any harm.
FlowerdUp89 16-10-2007, 12:42 It an amazing song! One the best EVER drum fills. Phill Collins - Legend
New version of the drumming advert is out.... this time drumming to Bonnie Tyler, Total Eclipse of the Heart.
And Cadbury's runway ad has been updated, this time playing to Bon Jovi, Living on a Prayer.
