View Full Version : Mobile speed cameras
The safety camera partnerships actively give out the locations of the mobile speed cameras. I've set up a web page to help everyone with quick links to different regions if travelling outside Sheffield. see www.policecamera.co.uk
Thanks for that. Good link.
I would say that the Police are stupid though.
They always put the camera mentioned on that website on Langsett Road South in Oughtie.
It is just round a bend and designed to trap people. But it is in the wrong place.
For a start nobody drives along that road now that Middlewood Road is shut. Yet they are there for two weeks.
Secondly they should put the camera up in Worrall where they are having probs with the diversion traffic speeding through their village.
The only time they changed the direction of the camera, they put it on Low Road in Oughtie. This really annoyed me because it is quite a slow road and not actuall where the problems were. The real probs were further along on Middlewood Rd/Langsett at the bottom of Beeley and Bertam Roads. Traffic overtakes there despite entrances and exits to other roads.
The Traffic police are lazy stupid idiots who only make the least effort to properly stop speeding. I almost got out of my car when they were on low Road to tell them what to do or go away and catch some criminals. I was angry, luckily my wife stopped me because they would have probably arrested me for being rude.
But to be honest I don't think I could have had a go anyway because I was in fits of giggles. The two coppers fitted the lazy stupid stereotype. One had a ginger type beard and looked abit miserable. The other was really fat and drinking a milkshake. They did not look to interested in what they were doing.
Silly arses.
Wouldn't it be funny if someone made a cardboard sign "smile at the cops round the corner" :-)
beansforyou 06-09-2007, 17:50 Someone at Winn GArdens used to put a large carboard sign up where the Nursery is now, letting people know the camera was further up near the ambulance station.

Why would anyone need to know where there is a speed camera? Apart, of course, from people breaking the law .. and I don't see why you'd be wanting to help those.
Lol blusky. got images of that fat police officer from the simpsons now.
Why would anyone need to know where there is a speed camera? Apart, of course, from people breaking the law .. and I don't see why you'd be wanting to help those.
Why not just put the signs up anyhow, just at random locations - ragardless of there being a speed camera or not. Initially people will slow down until you get the "boy that cried wolf" effect.
Taximark 07-09-2007, 01:14 Why would anyone need to know where there is a speed camera? Apart, of course, from people breaking the law .. and I don't see why you'd be wanting to help those.
And here we have a do gooder that never goes 31 mph
Why would anyone need to know where there is a speed camera? Apart, of course, from people breaking the law .. and I don't see why you'd be wanting to help those.
Why not ask the 'safety' camera partnerships, who routinely publish the information on their websites?
I would rather see more police traffic cars on the roads than mobile camera vans.
Can a camera van find out the reasons why someone was speeding? Can they take the culprit off the roads immediately? No.
Why invest £30,000 or so in a camera van when it should be ploughed into the Police traffic dept - with their automatic number plate recognition systems they can catch speedsters, breathalise them, if so arrest them, catch uninsured drivers, road tax dodgers, banned drivers, joyriders. Making the roads safer for everyone.
Everyone goes over the speed limit and 99.5% time law abiding but why have a camera van on Chesterfield Rd in a 30mph limit going downhill or uphill near Graves Park waiting for one off errors. Someone could race past a camera van at speed gets a ticket but could cause an accident killing someone up the road. At least Police car presence is there and then.

And here we have a do gooder that never goes 31 mph
I never go at any mph, I don't drive - but that's completely irrelevant. When I break the law, deliberately OR accidentally, I expect to pay the penalty, and I don't complain about people trying to enforce it.
There's already plenty of signs warning you to slow down. They're called speed-limit signs. I see no need to put up another one.
beansforyou 07-09-2007, 09:41 Why would anyone need to know where there is a speed camera? Apart, of course, from people breaking the law .. and I don't see why you'd be wanting to help those.
I wouldn't want to help anyone breaking the law, I never said I would.
I just found it amusing that someone would go to the lengths mentioned, maybe they were annoyed at how the camera van always hides in the driveway of the ambulance station, so you can't see him from the main road?
I thought that was illegal in itself?
beansforyou 07-09-2007, 09:52 There's already plenty of signs warning you to slow down. They're called speed-limit signs. I see no need to put up another one.
Personally I don't think there are enough speed limit signs.
For example, say I take the lovely new detour around the A6102 that the council can't be bothered to fix, There is a 30MPH speed limit sign as you enter Worral But If you go up Stockarth Lane and turn right onto Haggstones Rd and down church street, theres not one sign telling you the speed limit.
As there are no street lights on Stockarth lane that makes it national speed limit right? then as it turns into Mowson Lane it becomes 30 because of the lights?
Now at the bottom of church St I can turn left towards Deepcar (or, if I don't know the area, I can turn right into the oncoming traffic on the one way system, as there is no signage to tell you otherwise) the signs along this part are most fun, they are either covered over (by the council) temporary 50 signs just on the bend before the temporary traffic lights, doing 50 in a bus must be fun as you spot the red light and queue of traffic round the corner - or there are no signs at all.
At Oughtibridge mill it becomes 40.
Going in the other direction, it's 40 from the Blue Ball at wharncliffe Side, then a 30 sign, then theres signs covered up again, a 50 sign thats kinda tilted sideways (does that count) then a 30 sign, all within about a 1/4 mile.
And you have to keep your eyes on the road...
Wouldn't it be funny if someone made a cardboard sign "smile at the cops round the corner" :-)
We have something like that in Oughtie. Somebody usually puts cardboard signs up (I think it might be the same person who does the ones at Winn Gardens). Somebody also puts a big lorry trailor in front of where the speed camera van is supposed to be.
it happens every time!
I wouldn't want to help anyone breaking the law, I never said I would.

So did I.
I am totally in agreement with reducing speed and catching idiots.
I have two young kids and the main roads scare the life out of me sometimes.
But I do not think the cameras are placed in areas to be a help. They are at certain points to catch the people going just over thirty so they can all get abonus when they hit their targets.
The Police should get off their arses and catch criminals. I dont blame specific officers (although some can be jobsworths). I blame politically correct numptys like Med Whateverhisnameis who runs our local constabulary.Politically correct New Labour goons who spend more time working on soundbites rather than real crime.
The traffic police are always going to cop for abuse. But it is the fact that hard working normal people can become criminals with this police force wheras crack heads et al just seem to get their benefits increased.
Message to Top Cop Med Whateveryournameis; Stop sending your officers on diversity courses to learn how to wear a dress and catch some criminals.
And do not quote that Sheffield is the safest place in the world.
People dont report a lot of crimes because they know your officers will not turn out for some of it and cannot do anyhting about it either.
In terms of this thread, tell the fat copper Strawberry milkshakes are no good for him:hihi:
I don't know if anyone likes me or my posts but i'm going to try and demonstrate another way of thinking. The cardboard sign is a way of annoying the cops making them realise they aren't as clever as they think they are, two can play at sneaky games. Its the cops I'd want to discover the sign like when a new unit comes to relieve them. It would be obstructing a cop in the exec of his duty of course so sadly no-one could overcome the inbuilt paranoia to make a sign. It releases tension thinking about it.
Going back to the politically correct speed limit and all the lovers of it, if speed limits are so important how come you don't get a ban for going on a dual carriageway at 70 with 40mph signs(halifax road weekend nights taxis), but on a motorway going the same 30mph over that limit 100mph gets you a ban? Catching drivers out can only be political correctness to filter the public into good and bad - you should all find that insulting. If speed limits are so important why is it cars don't have a button for 30mph, one for 40mph, one for 50mph, one for 70mph? because the speed limits aren't important enough to change car design thats why, speed limits are there as a guide really, like the 5mph limit on supermarket carparks is always broken. Doing 10mph over stupid limits once in a while is the least bad thing that naughty law breakers can possibly do if you sat and made a list starting with Murder.
I'm happy to pedal my pushbike on roads knowing if someones holding their speed at 10mph above the limit they'll see my flourescent coat and slow down to the limit, then speed up when they've passed me. If I'm happy with that why are other people not so understanding?
newvanandman 07-09-2007, 14:59 Why would anyone need to know where there is a speed camera? Apart, of course, from people breaking the law .. and I don't see why you'd be wanting to help those.
Thats because your blind!!

It'd be funny if it wasn't true. I regularly make this trip (both directions) and was amazed (when I first encountered it) with the 40/30/50/30mph limits within such a small area.
I've tweeked the site so its more easier to use. I will try and add more areas in the next couple of weeks.
www.policecamera.co.uk
Ive added pratically most of the country now - some sites will give the dates and locations - others just give the locations and no dates.

Bikertec 28-11-2007, 20:13 The most stupid one I saw recently was a camera van on the m180 parked up just of the hard shoulder. 1st it is parked around a blind bend, 2nd it was ******* it down. 1st thing I did when I saw it was brake, not recomended in the wet on a motorway second was to check my speed which would have been around 70mph before breaking. This I think is a narural reaction and could have been very dangerous. :loopy:

Whilst I would never condone speeding, Speed limits cannot be enforced (or should not) if the posted signage falls below the requirements in law. I am aware that the Camera Partnership check sites for compliance before enforcement is conducted.
I believe the enforcement level is still 10% + 2mph in any given limit. (eg. 36mph in a 30 zone).
For those of you that get caught, stop whining and pay the fine ! :D

Are you sure this was a camera van ? AND engaged in Speed Detection.
They do park on overhead bridges on the M180. (Sometimes in the early hours - naughty !!!)
However, to stop on the hard shoulder for Camera enforcement would be an Offence and its fair to say its unlawful to commit an Offence to detect one ?? :loopy:

For those of you that get caught, stop whining and pay the fine ! :DIm sorry but I have this thing called a foot that after sometime either adds pressure to the peddle or reduces it. This causes the car to go faster or slower and without a limiter to make my car stick at 30mph or constantly watch the speedo the cars speed either creeps up or down without me knowing. Maybe all cars should be fitted with a speed limiter.:loopy:

Its called driving ability or acceleration sense, probarbly combined with your stated lack of attention you are a statistic waiting to happen ! Good luck............:D
Trying wearing slippers lots softer and wont press the pedal so hard....

Had you been driving to the conditions / limit...........you would have avoided the `brake` reaction knowing you were driving fine and within the limit and avoided the potentially dangerous situation you describe..............A good lesson learnt !!!
Obviously, if the weather conditions were as described you being a professional driver were driving safely for the conditions within the limit and didnt need to brake hard in a panic potentially creating danger all around.......refresher training ??
Case closed....................:loopy:
Bikertec 28-11-2007, 20:38 Well I have been driving for over 20 years with no accidents caused by my driving, only time ever getting caught for speeding was doing 38mph heading into a 40mph zone. I drive now approx 60miles per day. before that I travelled over 1000 per week without an incidents so please don't comment on my driving as you have no idea of my driving capabilities.
Thanks for that. Good link.

Maybe you should get your facts in order. The safety camera partnership staff are not police. Traffic police don't operate cameras.
But to be honest I don't think I could have had a go anyway because I was in fits of giggles. The two coppers fitted the lazy stupid stereotype. One had a ginger type beard and looked abit miserable. The OP was talking about safety camera partnerships vans as posted on the website by the safety camera partnership. They definitely are not operated by the police.

Technically civilians shouldn't be allowed to operate speed cameras, because in law only a policeman is officially qualified to give the prior assessment of speed that the camera corroborates.
Doesn't stop them doing it though.
If it's checking every car coming down the road then there is no prior assessment of speed.
I didn't think that the police had any special power or right in this area though, it's just that a court is likely to take there word (or used to be before cameras were everywhere), as they have more experience in judging speed than your average jo.
dronfieldowl 29-11-2007, 08:27 I never go at any mph, I don't drive
Case rested.
There are a lot of these around Meadowhead at the moment, either vans or the guys/gals you get on bikes with the handheld ones.
I'm sure it'd be cheaper for them just to put a fixed one up :)
I travel often from Walkley to the the M1 , always being aware there mobile speed cameras en-route ...not that I speed ! But I haven't seen them around for a couple of months, do they take holidays ?

I think i got caught by a mobile camera operated by a motor bike copper on rivelin valley road heading towards the junction of the post office.

I don't think this is correct. I think the enforcement level is exactly the speed limit, ie 30 in a 30 mph. I don't think you are allowed any lee-way at all.

The 10% + 2mph rule is a national enforcement guide set out by ACPO and correct !
The 10% + 2 rule is a guideline but monkeylover is correct you can be penalised at 31mph. They will normally allow some leeway but there is no need to.
MonkeyLover 04-06-2008, 13:55 Thank you, SteveH I know someone who failed a driving test on the fact that he was going 33 mph in a 30 mph zone. That was his only major fault, and only got a couple of minor faults, so would have passed otherwise.

indeed, mobiles / vans commonly book at 31, 32 - fixed, generally go off at 10% plus 2 but not always ...

but the L-test has NOTHING or very little to do with speed enforcement, different rules and reasoning altogether - you will know people who have failed their test for driving (for no good reason) at 30 in a 40 limit.
