View Full Version : Corporate Networks banning MYSPACE question
goldenfleece 06-09-2007, 12:03 Our website www.doveandrainbow.com was currently set to re-direct with one click straight to our MYSPACE page...trouble is a lot of people email me and they they are blocked from using myspace on their work PC's and cant get to the listings........I have changed the settings so that the address www.doveandrainbow.com is now URL MASKED (should be active later today) going direct to MYSPACE in the content window of the browser but displaying the doveandrainbow.com URL......will this get round this problem or do networks block more than just the URL of Myspace......

Having worked with corporate IT - its probably just the url
Good question. Basic blockers would probably just block the URL, I'm sure that there are some which will be a bit more intelligent about it though, & without specific examples of blocking software I think that no-one would be able to give you more than a guess, or specific examples of what would happen with specific software...
I guess it'll be a case of wait & see what happens. Just out of interest, why have a MySpace page as your main site for your business? Not criticising or owt, just wondering if it offers any advantages?

It has proved invaluable, for example, as a tool for getting bands to contact us, as MYSPACE has a whole network of bands and profiles....with the calendar feature its easy to book gigs and get them showing up as bookings immediately....and its so easy to update and work with compared to running a full website. May have to re-think this in the future, but when we had a full conventional website, the moment we introduced the parallel MYSPACE version with a link from a main page to both Myspace and the conventional site, Myspace was getting 90% of the hits, and the standard web site was picking up only 10% traffic.
So it made sense to re-direct the website to myspace, as its networking and promotional tools, ie bulletins, BLOGS, etc, are so incredibly useful to us. The old site is still there on the server as BAK files but its out of date completely and since many of our customers have myspace profiles and contact us that way, and access the calendar feature and leave comments, etc, this seemed the best option to use....and its free of course....and social networking is pretty much the way the Dove works..
because looking at the bar takings week by week since we opened last november, trade was steady and not increasing significantly until February and the moment we went on MYSPACE con-incides with a trade increase of 100% within 7 days, and the progressive subsequent rise of bar turnover every week by about 4% growth.....I can put this down partly to MYSPACE thro its networking and friends system, it does so much in marketing and promotions for us as this is what it is best at.......
goldenfleece 06-09-2007, 15:02 Could anyone out there using IE6 or 7 just goto
www.doveandrainbow.com
and see if the URL mask for MYSPACE
shows up the URL as the .com address and NOT the Myspace address, and that it seems to be working correctly....
FIREFOX seems Ok......

doveandrainbow.com remains in the address bar in IE6
(the music will definately get you banned from corporate land...:hihi:)
goldenfleece 06-09-2007, 15:17 Actually not going to use this method, all my images have vanished, the URL MASK has created problems with the location of the images as they are mostly held on my own server, so it has been reversed....back to normal in a few hours and I will have to try another method.........

You would have to make all your links absolute to do this (?)
You could just place a frame on/in your index page for the doveandrainbow.com site, and have the myspace page load in that frame... with a DnR header logo or something...
however, alot of corperate firewalls dont work from the address in the address bar, they work from the URL request, so even though the site address is doveandrainbow.com - the html comes from myspace -- in this case, the frame method I mentioned above wont work either.. you'd need to set it up via some anonymizer type setup.

Unless it's in the course of doing their job, people shouldn't be on the Internet from work anyway, wait till you get home IMO.

That won't work for any decent blocking proxies/firewalls as they'll be blocking the myspace URL. Just because it's in a frame in a browser doesn't stop the request going to myspace.com.

I'd love to know what it's got to do with you! What about lunchtimes and breaks and so on?

Most employers allow personal internet use outside of work hours - i.e. before and after work and at lunchtime. Sometimes this is people's only form of internet access, not everyone has it at home.
