Hi!
Got a few questions and wondered if anyone could offer any advice.
(1) I have a hamster and would like to litter train it if possible, can anyone tell me how to go about it?
(2) I am thinking of getting a Rabbit and Guinea Pig. Can anyone tell me anything I should know before I do.
(3) I'm going to ask my dad to build me a cage for the Rabbit & Guinea Pig. Can anyone tell me what the minimum size should be for it and also what it should/should not have. Also if he makes me a run for them to put on the grass how big should this be.
(4) Can anyone recommend where to get a Rabbit & Guinea Pig that will be healthy and have been well looked after.
Thanks in advance!
I put the potty in my hamsters normal wee corner and added a bit of her soiled bedding, she uses it with no trouble and actually sits in there and eats food alot.
And about the rabbit and guinea pig, they cant be kept together as the rabbit can hurt or kill the guinea pig even if it doesnt mean it. You should try a pair of same sex guinea pigs or a rabbit pair.
Maybe you could speak to sooz, she runs a rabbit rescue and would be able to tell you a little more about them and their housing requirements.
For a pair of guinea pigs a 100cm cage or above would be fine.
Please dont keep a rabbit and guinea pig together, my friend had a pair once and she found the guinea pig injured one morning. The vet couldn't do anything and he had to be put to sleep.
I tried keeping a small rabbit and a guinea pig together a few years ago, the rabbit became very aggressive to the guinea pig, it kept spraying wee all over it and then it scratched and bit the guinea pig so I had to seperate them.
Once they were apart the rabbit was a normal little bunny.....cute and cuddly but when with the piggy it was a monster which quite suprised me because Fluffy was the loveliest guinea pig you could ever wish to meet. The guinea pig was treated and made a full recovery but the ordeal was very traumatic for both him and me at the time.
Thanks for those replies.
I'm really glad I asked for advice because i'd always believed that rabbits & guinea pigs made good housemates. I'll now have to have a think about which to have.
I'd go for guinea pigs every time!
Guinea pigs are generally easier to handle than rabbits, much more friendly and responsive, not as smelly and they make the most adorable noises!
As you can probably tell.....I am a bit of a fan of guinea pigs but I've had both rabbits and guinea pigs over the years and have always found the guinea pigs to be the best pet. I think rabbits tend to need a lot more space too.
But that's just my oppinion :)
Rabbits and Gpigs cannot be kept to gether for a variety of reasons:
1. They are not the same species, cannot communiacte effectvley and do not get the same level of companionship from each other as they would from their own species.
2. Rabbits often bully GPigs and injure them, sometimes unintentionally.
3. They have different dietary requirements....GPigs need more Vitamin C in their diets than rabbits.
4. Rabbits carry a bacteria known as Pasturella in their respiratory tracts. While this has no effect on most rabbits it is lethal to GPigs.
If you decide to get a rabbit bear in mind that they are highly sociable and should be kept in pairs. They also need to be neutered to prevent health and behavioural problmes and require annual vaccination.....which GPigs dont.
Rabbits require a lot of care and attention and you will also need to find a rabbit savvy vet.....be warned, rabbits are still classed as exotics and their treatemtn is often more costly than the same in a cat or dog.
That said they are wonderful creatures and I love them to bits :D
