View Full Version : Help with setting up PC in Longley
PaulTansley 07-01-2005, 11:03 Due to me being as thick as two short planks when it comes to setting up a pc is there anybody local who can start me off.
I will pay if needed but someone who knows how to set them up would make my life easier at the moment.
alchemist 07-01-2005, 12:02 what are you trying to do, simply build it and/or install software, or are you trying to modify its settings as well?

dave Basically take it out of the box and get it working.
There is a remote this, a box that and wires all over and i'm confused good style.
alchemist 07-01-2005, 12:45 is it a brand spanker or a specially built one? is there anything particularly exotic about it?, i might be able to have a pike at it, how urgent is it?
dave
PaulTansley 07-01-2005, 13:13 Alch, its a brand new spanker and its reasonably urgent, depends when you can fit it in.
Martin_s 07-01-2005, 17:00 Ordinarily I'd say no problem but I'm chocka with work and tax season at the moment...
Word of advice though, if you don't have your own broadband connection, I'd try to find someone who can provide you with one for a couple of hours for your computer to get all the latest windows updates, anti-virus and the like downloaded and installed on your PC...
Always a good idea to get your PC all ready properly so you don't find yourself immediately jumping into a virus and spyware quagmire...
Best of luck...
boldfish 07-01-2005, 17:11 It's the sort of thing I do and charge big companies £350 a day for.
whereabouts are you?
as someone said, it's important to get the PC protected against nasties before you connect it to the internet.
There's plenty of free software to do that, but it all takes time to install.
shout if you get to the point where you want to pay someone.
(home users get my £28 an hour rate (which is cheaper than a plumber)
:D
It's a pity that a community as big as this cannot club together when another member has a problem.
I do not drive Cycleracer and my nights are taken by my daughter, due to my partner working. Otherwise i would take pleasure in helping you set your new computer up for free!.
I would follow Martin_s's advice and update your pc as soon as you get connected to the net. I have just purchased a new laptop and it came with Norton anti virus free (which i removed asap, but that's another story). I suspect you will find that you have some sort of anti virus software bundled in to your pc package.
I would be more than happy to offer any advice i can while on-line. If you get stuck, PM me with your number and i will do what i can to talk you through the set-up.

Can't they ;)
Free computer repairs by volunteers (http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?postid=222724#post222724)
These people will take a look for free, but it is on Spital Hill, and Cycleracer regularly tells us, you might get mugged on the way.
Alternatively, I am sure that neeeeeeeeeek would live to visit Longley one day and sort it for Cycleracer (or maybe not).
Finally "This service is primarily aimed at Burngreave residents (we will probably be applying for a grant and need 70% of beneficiaries to live in the area to qualify) but we won't be turning anyone away." Some of you may label this 'racist' and inform your local MP / national newspaper.
Sorry, I'm going to have a lie down...forget that, I've just woken up. I'm off shopping.

I'm quite happy to help online for free - but Cycleracer said he was willing to pay and it sounded like he needed someone to visit and set up his computer.
Why is it that we'd all happily pay the TV repair man or the plumber or a builder to come and do work for us, but as soon as someone gets a PC they think they shouldn't have to pay for help with it?
it takes time to set up a PC, it takes knowledge to do it well (and that takes time to learn) why are people so against paying for computer help?
Ho-hum.
seems like I'm in the wrong place and have chosen the wrong career.
so sorry if I offended anyone.
Stephen_H 08-01-2005, 18:44 Any luck getting your system set up cycleracer?
I have offered to help this guy, so he should be getting in touch with me sometime soon.
alchemist 10-01-2005, 08:28 as i didnt hear anything from cycleracer this weekend i am assuming that he has fixed it, is that the case cycle?
