You just know that she'll give birth in secret the minute that your back is turned- either that or she'll wait until you're asleep.

yep im not movin from this house until they come lol a lot of movement in her tum today feels like she got worms in there lol!

medusa
05-09-2007, 11:13
It probably won't be today then- in my experience, they wriggle a lot less in the day or two before they're born.

(Now watch- she'll prove me wrong!)

05-09-2007, 11:17

medusa

With her colouring she could have any colour of kittens, even if daddy were plain black (with the exception of grey I think).

I certainly saw a beautiful tortie wegie- her babies should be gorgeous (and a lovely rainbow of colours too).

Genetically, to get tortie and white cats have to have all of the colour types. They're carried on the X and Y chromosomes- this is why you don't get tortie and white boys (unless they're phenotypically boys but genotypically superfemales- XXY rather than XY).

Errmmm...speaking of kittens....I think we may be taking Ashia our Norwegian Forest Cat to the vets to be checked on, next week, on account of she is looking a bit chubby.

Now, when we brought Charlie home from xxhunniixx a few weeks back, we thought we'd made sure the pair could not get together before he went for the 'snip', but something just doesnt feel right n I have this sneaking feeling we may hear the pitter patter of Wegie/cross-Wegie feet in the next 3-4 weeks... There's no way it could be from any other source, we are extremely careful with Ashia...

It would be nice to report it is all my imagination, but if not, there could well be a call for lots of pregnant cat/ forthcoming kittens advice in the next few weeks (oh and some possibly gorgeous silver/ ginger wegie cross kittens looking for new forever homes). meantime, I'm watching Ashia's diet and making sure she is eating healthily.

Congrats - we def need photos soon. Who's the daddy? Was it Charlie? Ash has a fine pair of saddlebags developing n has started inspecting hideaways- don't like the way she keeps hovering on the bed as if she's made her mind up to have em there (if she is).

Did you have to help her in anyway? Did she clean up herself (My old cat years ago ate everything and left no mess :gag:)

hehe, glad it's not just me then! He says we have enough with one cat and two rabbits, but I think we could find room for at least another pussy cat. Trouble is, and this is what puts me off, he reckons if we got another one that it would change Spangles personality for ever, she so spoilt and used to being on her own, and getting her own way, and he is right I wouldn't want her to change or be upset.

I've only ever experienced it once, about 24 yrs ago when my moggie Sputnik delivered 4 gorgeous kittens under the stereo cabinet in the living room - we'd tried to stop her going under there and put all manner of comfy beds out for her instead but no, she insisted in delivering right under the cupboard. I thought that would be the first and last time but no, here we go with the silver stunner. Heaven knows what her kittens will look like but they've got to be gorgeous, looking at Ash and Charlie stud.

Ashia keeps laying on our bed and getting herself all comfy but I don't like the idea of her delivering sprogs near our big daft dobe whilst we're at work. Will have to encourage her to stay upstairs or in the living room... Charlie has been severly ticked off for having his evil way with her (he doesnt look as if he'd know how) and Ashia has been labelled a tart for letting him.

I'm interested too. With us, it became more apparent when we got back from our hols-Ashia looks much bigger n has developed 'saddlebags' and her nipples have def gone bigger and harder. We know when Charlie arrived and when we got him snipped, so have a pretty good idea when she will drop - end Sept/ early October-ish. I just hope it becomes obvious when she goes into labour- I'd rather not leave her on her own if I can help it but would need some advance warning if I have to take time off work.

after about 4 weeks she starts to show she looks like she swallowed a barrel lol
by the last week she can hardly sit down that how i knew she was due plus she cnt scale the fence bless her now tho shes bouncin around playin with the other cats why cant humans recover like that...?

she should be fine katkin i wudnt take anytime off she will probs do it at night as all the cats i have had have dun this poppy tends to wait till house is quiet the first labour she had the last kitten got stuck so i had to gently pull spook out but poppy let me know i was doin it ok then she had a rest for a few minues before cleaning her up i panicked because i was her first litter and i didnt think shed have a clue what to do but she did !

Cheers hunnii - we went to see a CPL fosterer this weekend (we're looking at fostering for them again) n she told us one of the queens she'd got in at the moment who'd just delivered needed help cos the first kitten died n the rest her son had to remove the birth sacks and attend to the umbilicle cords, is what got me thinking about leaving Ashia, if anything went wrong... Anyway, hopefully she'll deliver at night as you say. Sputnix did that too.

and it looks like there could be more fluffy norwegian forest cross kitties looking for loving homes around December/January time, if Ashia parts with hers around early/mid October -although if they are as gorgeous as she is (and her stud-muffin boyfriend Charlie), I shouldnt expect many problems finding new homes for whatever number she produces.

This happened to me, when we got a new cat my other much loved cat Jasper decided he didnt want to live with us anymore and for months we didnt know where he was or even if he was still alive.
Then one day we saw him on the garden of another house and a little boy was stroking him, when I asked him about the cat he said his name was Barney! and that they had had him a couple of months.
It broke my heart at the time (and 2 years on I still feel tearful and miss him) but cats are very independent and although It upset me to know he didnt want to live with us I was so grateful to know he was happy and well looked after.
The thing with cats is they are so independent and if they arent happy they will move on. Dont blame yourself, I know I did but there is nothing you can do.
I know first hand how upset you must be but at least (and I know it only helps a bit) you know he is safe! :(

Sometimes it is for the best- we inherited TWIB when we moved here 18yrs ago- (that's what we called him -an all black cat aka 'thing wot is blackty' T.W.I.B.). He sort of turned up at same time another stray moggy decided to make us his new home- lot of students in the area and they were in the habit of getting kittens when they arrived and then abandoning them when they graduated and went back home.
Over the years, we inherited a number of cats and TWIB was always prtty shy - he didnt feel comfortable with our other moggies and started spending time a few houses down from us, so much so that he eventually moved in -and whe nthey moved to another area, they asked if they could keep him. It was hard but the kindest thing for him, he was obviously uncomfortable with other younger cats.
Twib was a lovely old boy and even after he moved away with them, I continued to get lovely letters on his progress -and photos. The couple had a lottle boy and he and TWIB became great friends. Sadly, TWIB passed away a couple of years ago, but I am happy that he was thoroughly spoiled in his new home, bless him.

i guess like you say,as long as he is hppy and healthy that i all that matters.
i am devastated that he has gone and so are the kids but i suppose they will not hurt forever.
it makes it worse cos it is the nextdoor neighbour and they have to see him all the time...:(

Well, still no sign of Ashia parting with her furry babies yet- although she gets to look more and more like she's carrying 2 sacks of spuds on her sides every night. Keep thinking- it can't be much longer now...I reckon shes enjoying all that extra kitten food and doesnt want the portions to come to an end.

Dad is unquestionably Charlie http://i164.photobucket.com/albums/u30/katkin2/Picture010.jpg
The new boy we adopted end July/early August- he must've got up close n personal with our one and only unspayed female before we got him snipped and we'd tried to keep them apart. No matter, she's norwegian forest cat, http://i164.photobucket.com/albums/u30/katkin2/IMGP0746.jpg
He's undoubtedly wegie too but without papers, so we're pretty sure they're going to be gorgeous, if she ever parts with them. She's silver tabby and he's ginger n white (or red, as they call it in posh circles), both semi long haired so if it all goes to plan there ought to be a mix of reds n silvers - but who knows!

Hi,

Baby kitties, I love em. Have you found homes already for them? :)

Lots of people showing interest, but wont really know until she pops - no idea how many she'll have and I'll want to be sure they go to indoor homes only - Ash comes from a long line of indoor wegies and Charlie is a homeboy too, so their offspring would proably not stand a chance on our roads. Plus, they have that nickable pedigree cat look about them that makes them just too interesting to the undesirables out there.

Other half has already said 'it goes without saying, we'll be keeping one', soft touch that he is.

Right now, I'm focussing on hoping she has a fuss-free delivery and healthy, happy babies. Keeping the barmy bengal n the daft dobe away from them will be a challenge - they're not as laid-back as your typical Lab (I think 'mental' is the word I'm looking for to describe my lot) and they're not programmed to play nursemaid- although I'm beginning to think Ailsa might start with one of her usualy phantom pregnancies anytime now, so that will be fun- dobermutt wetnurse!

Which reminds me, better go check on mum-to-be- she's got us getting up in the middle of the night to make sure she hasnt gone onto labour already - I'm sure she wakes up blinking into the light n saying 'Whaaaattttt?'

Hey Tatty- any word on your brother's cat? Does it look like she was pregnant or a false alarm?

Oh my god- it's started! Just been upstairs to check on her- no sign anywhere- looked in the soft cat carrier I put up last week for her, just in case she fancied that as a safe place to give birth- she's in there with 2 mewling kittens! Still biting the placenta from teh 2nd one- good thing I put vetbed in it- lots of mess (yuck).

She was getting a bit stressed with her feline audience so (another good thing she'd birthed in the carrier) I carreid it carefully down to the bathroom - the one and only room weve got that's cat-free. She seems happy in there now shes figured out how to feed them and is taking a bit of a break now.

Have given her some cat milk and a fresh litter tray, will take a bit of light chicken or tuna up to her in a minute and some water. Meantime, got to keep alfie n co away from her- the daft dobermutt is sulking in the bedroom wanting to know whats happening - she cant get to Ash either cos we fixed a dog gate on the landing when Charlie arrived. The proud father is of course clueless. Oh- too early to say what colour they are- they are still gunky and dark and the cat carrier is quite dark inside too- which kind of suggests they could be grey or brown tabby (ashias dad was siilver and her mum was brown tabby - there's a long line of silvers, brown tabbys and reds in her line so may be that combi...)

Right, better get back to cheering on from a distance duty- she seems a bit confused about her role, as any new mum is likely to feel. Where is other half when you need him- he'll be gutted he's missing it. xK

Been a busy night- mum n young 'uns seem to be doing OK- can't tell for sure because the canvas cat carrier is quite dark and there's not an awful lot of room in our bathroom, but looks like there's 4 - they are all really dark and there's a hint of tabby stripes - one may have a white chin, chest n paws but they're all moving too fast to tell. Good sign, I guess. First 2 mustve appeared between 7pm- 8:30pm and then there was a long rest- we were beginning to think that was it, but around 11:30pm, Alfie was scratching at the bathroom door and I got up to make sure he wasnt trying to get in - sure enough, Ashia was just about to give birth again -she was too tired to do more than lick this one so I carefully picked it up in a bit of tissue paper (yuck and all) and placed it nearer to 'the taps', as other half keeps calling em.

Stayed long enough to tell Ash what a clever girl she was and to make sure all were feasting, then crashed back to bed - all this scrabbling about on hard floors is doing my bad back no good. Around 2:30am, other half woke me to say it looked like there might be another 2 (or 1- it was hard to tell even then), but at 4 he changed his mind and thought 3 was her lot.

Got up again this morning to find more than 3 after all - we think 4 but dont want to go prodding and poking. Great thing is, Ash is really chilled out and seems to want human company, so isnt objecting to being the focus of attention. She's lapping up the cat milk and fish and has had a bit of kitten food too, so is def keeping her strength up. It's nice and warm in our bathroom and she's got radio 4 and the cockatiel and fish for company so lots of ambience...Will check her at lunchtime and keep you posted. Kitties look twice the size they were last night - obviously fluffed up now but also feeding well.

Have taken some photos and will get other half to upload later (roll on when my new laptop arrives n I can do it myself) - I promise not to upload the one of her trying to chew through a placenta (I didnt realise that was what she was doing until I viewed the video image- ugghhh!) Poor girl- because she had most of her teeth removed last year, she was struggling and I had to cut through the umbil. cord of the 2nd kitten with the sterilised scissors (dont try that dental floss idea, it's useless...) She obviously managed Ok with the others xK

Awwww- sounds like you're going to have an even more mad time round your place than usual in the next few weeks katkin!

I'm sure as long as you're telling her she's a good mummy and reassuring her lots then she'll do all the right things. If they're having trouble finding the milk amongst all the tummy fur you may find that clipping the hair around her teats makes things a little easier for them- but other than that as long as they're feeding I'm sure everything will happen like it's meant to.

Give her a love off me please.

Thanks Medusa - I wish I'd taken the time to clip her beforehand as she will need a good clean up what with the yuck around her tail n back legs. We took her collar off so she'd not have that to annoy her and will have a look how she is getting on with feeding little uns before bringing out the trimming scissors. They were certainly moving about and getting well fed when we nipped home at lunchtime. Daft dobermutt must be feeling a bit left out - she'd pulled the bedspread and the dustsheet off our bed and made herself a lovely cosy nest in my nice new chocolate satin sheets (we're not usually that cheesy but hey, a full kingsize bedset for £15 from Netto!) - Trouble is, satin is awful slidy and easy for a sulky dobermutt to get cost in. Tart.

Quick update: sadly we lost one of the kitties during the night- poor little mite was the last to be born and was always a little smaller than the others- we stayed up and tried to persuade it to latch on to mum to feed but it just wasnt having it. No cimicat in the house grrr why wasnt I more organised but to be honest the little thing was probably beyond that anyway. Followed emergency advice on the internet about alternatives to cat milk and made up a weak solution of glucose and electrolytes (which was one of many suggested revival recipes) but little one just didnt want to suckle. Others appear to be doing OK and have nice ful bellies, quite active and keeping warm together - mum has started wandering, obviously getting bored with being cooped up 24/7. She was distressed at losing her baby and needed soothing words and strokes to calm her. This morning, she'd moved one of the other kittens so we need to make sure there are lots of fluffy towels in various nooks n crannies in our bathroom, to be sure if she does decide to move them they can still stay warm and cosy. Mum has lots of nourishing food on the go and fresh water n cat milk and appears to be producing enough milk, so just hope remaining 'mewlings' continue to thrive.

Thanks moonbird n hunnii. I'm being rational and telling myself it was for the best- if the little thing had survived who knows what ailments it might have contracted later on. Things always happen for a purpose, don't they? Such a cute little bundle though- lovely colour, who knows what he or she would have turned out like...but not meant to be.

Been home this lunchtime to check n Ash had moved them all to under the bathroom sink - no blanket or covering...just Ash with her huge fluffy tail wrapped round them. Little uns are fine though. Quickly got a fleecy towel for them all to lay on with mum if they must insist on being under the sink, whilst Chris fetched a cardboard box to cut to size to fit under the sink, so now they have a proper nest to lay in. Gordon bennet- and this is only day3! Have got some Lactol now in case of emergencies and will be needing some anyway when it comes to time to start weaning em off -won't that be fun - they latch onto mum like little vampires...

Im a great believer in thats things always happen for a reason, even though the reason isnt always there to see. Im sure she is up there now having fun with all the other kitties.
Nice to know the others are healthy :)

I'm so sorry to hear about the little one katkin. It sounds like there was nothing that you or anyone else could have done for the poor thing though- sometimes mummies know that there's something wrong and stop feeding that kitten, which means that there's little chance of us being able to hand rear them anyway.

It's good to hear that the other kittens are good and strong- I'm sure they'll grow startlingly fast and you'll be posting about kitten-proofing your home in no time!

Thankyou keely and medusa - and for the hugs, much appreciated. Ash is getting plenty of fuss- have had to put her back on a blander diet for a while though- she had the runs today - all that extra cat milk, rich fish n whiskas kitten food playing jip with her innards. Have opted for tinned shredded chicken and white fish for a few days- she's still got her dried food and plenty of fluids, but will be reducing the quantity of cat milk for a little while- dont want her going gooey on me or upsetting the mewlings. Better go n check on them - and then I have the delicate task of burying little kitty in our yard somewhre close to our other long- gone furries. Other half has gone to his mum's, otherwise I would've roped him in for grave digging duty... and I will light a candle outside for the little one.

Hi folks, Ive uploaded a couple of vids of Ash n her 3 kitties for those of you who go all gooey looking at little furries

Ive managed to persuade her that living in a cardboard box covered in towles aint the best place ot bring up babies and following a quick trip to Jolleyes and a further depleted bank balance, can happily report that mum n young uns are now firmly ensconced in a new and more comfortable sheltered abode... http://i164.photobucket.com/albums/u30/katkin2/kittens2040.jpg

Ash is quite a light silver with dark tabby stripes- her chest is fluffy white and her paws are black underneath. It looks like one of the kitties will have a similar colour to Ash - the other two are both quite dark with white chests n paws- but I cant quite tell yet whterh they will end up being silver n black tabbies or dark brown n black tabbies. Have had a quick shuftie but cant tell what sex they all are yet. They're plumping up nicely now- wont be long before eyes n ears open.

We're already thinking about what to do when they start moving around. Being a tiny terrace, there's not a lot of space but other half has agreed to shift the PC n all that paraphenalia back up stairs so there'll be a space downstairs for a temporary play pen that we wont keep tripping over. We need something that will be pretty dog-proof cos we dont want Ailsa pawing at them, so reckon a trip to B&Q might be imminent. Had a look at playpens in Jolleyes n cage but neither are ideal.
