Does anyone on here suffer from thyroid cancer or know of anyone in Sheffield who does?

Hi, I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer about ten years ago. I have now had my thyroid taken out (in two operations) and depend on thryroxine tablets.

karenjane what information are you trying to find out? I have hashimotos thyroiditis and am now dependant on levothyroxine. I did quite a bit of research when i was diagnosed and can point you in the direction of some medical research sites.

I have just had the remainder of my thyroid removed (first half out Jan 04) and am waiting to have radioactive iodine therapy.
Papillary thyroid cancer is what I was diagnosed with. All the more difficult to deal with as I have a baby aged 18 months too.
Just hoped to be able to be in touch with someone local with similar experience as it is a rare cancer.

hi there my friend from home recently had thyroid problems, when she had one removed it was found cancerous. she then had the other one removed just befor christmas and found out on new years eve that the cancer hadn't spread to it. she too is waiting to have radioactive iodine therapy. when i saw her she said that she had felt much better after the operation although she gets tired more easily.

i hope everything works out for you, im sure it can't be easy bringing up a baby nevermind being ill.

keep your chin up and good luck to you x

onedizzybird,
I found out just before Christmas that the cancer was detected in the other side but only in microscopic amounts, only detectable with microscope. Pap thyroid cancer is very slow growing and has a 'cure' rate of well over 90% but it is still a massive shock to find you have it.

thanks moongarden.

I had radioactive iodine treatment to non-surgically remove all traces of my thryoid gland at the weston park hospital. The procedure involved being kept in an isolation suite for three days after taking a very large tablet. You have to keep all your plates and crockery in the room with you as it must be properly decontaminated, and you are not allowed to leave the room, and no-one should come in. You get an intercom, and a TV and lots of cups of tea, but it is dead boring.

As a smoker, I was a bit perturbed at spending 3 days without cigs, but the ward sister said that providing I was careful, she couldn't see any reason for not having a sly cig now and again (thanks!).

The weirdest thing was when I left, I could still set off their radiation alarms at 50 paces, just by sticking my neck out around the corner.

I also had papillary thyroid cancer, I believe.

I'm bad at taking my tablets though, something I really need to work on.

Phanerothyme - what treatment do you have now?
Is it just blood tests? If so, how often?
Don't suppose you get a phone in your room do you? !
Maybe that's expecting too much!

Phanerothyme we should start a campaign for getting the days of the week on the packet like some contraceptive pills have.
