View Full Version : Dog deterrant on our walk sending dog crazy

For the last 3 times me and my OH have walked our dog she has freaked out at a certain spot. I can't overstate how upset she got - she got out of her harness, she wouldn't move then she'd pull in the oposit direction (onlookers gave me some right looks). We had to carry her past but she was fine after.

I suspect some form of dog deterant. I asked the RSPCA and they say its possible but I need to observe other dogs there to check its not just her. That said its legal anyway so there's nothing I can do.

If this is sonar/spray deterrant then I feel people should restrict it to their own land. I personally consider this anti-social behaviour

It may be legal to have this sort of thing covering a property, but this sounds like it's out on the street. That sounds a bit unfair at least.

Having said that, one of the dogs that I used to walk had odd moments about all sorts of places and had to be physically carried past certain spots that she decided were altogether too scary to be near (and I'm absolutely sure that there were no deterrent devices there). It was no joke when a border collie had to be carried down a path whilst walking 4 other dogs on the lead at the same time.

Bet there's not much dog **** on the pavement there though.

Where abouts is it it happens? I live quite close to you so could see how Charlie reacts to the area if you like?

could be some type of ultrasonic emitter. It may well be on someones property, but set up in such a way that it covers their boundry. Maybe they got fed up of roaming dogs using their property as a toilet? do you get the same reaction if you pass on the other side of the road?

Hi, it seems the behaviour may not have been a deterrant afterall. Today was met a stray/uncollared dog nearby which elicited the same response. I have no idea why its this paticular dog other than it being an 'enthusiastic' male, but I suspect the point in the road might be where he leaves his mark.

That said, I'm still not happy that its legal to have dog deterrants affecting the public highway. I dare say dog poop is annoying but assaulting dogs innocently walking past isn't the answer - I always scoop.

Takara used to have a spazzy fit each time she passed a certain spot... she'd swing round on her lead, pull back, run into the road (or tried to) and all sorts.

Then one day I mentioned it to a neighbour who said 'is it outside number 6?' apparently his dog did exactly the same thing and other dogs did too...

Of course, I put it down to the dogs picking up on restless spirits but now you come to mention it a dog deterrant seems more plausible...

Sounds about right. Its scary.

If it is a deterrant, I hope you're able to sort it out
