View Full Version : Parkour/freerunning (for anyone who has just seen jump britain)
ok, anyone who has seen the channle four documentary 'jump britain' and was inspired, be aware, there are tracuers (freerunners) in Sheffield and in the comming year im hoping the scene will expand. anyone who is thinking they want to give it a go or is just interested contact me on folded_lotus (at) hotmail.com and i can give you more info.
am gonna try and get some big sessions going on between the 25th of jan and the 5th of feb if your interested.
I just watched the program on channel4 and i think they are awesome people.
The guy from France (sorry, can't remember his name) seem'ed to float on his feet!.
yeah, thats sebastian foucan, a legend among men and one of the cofounders of parkour, he has spent years perfecting the way he moves (can you tell)
Watched it too and was amazed how easily they move from one wall to the next, like real Spidermen!
The jump across the open roof of the Millenium Stadium was awesome.
It was one of those programmes that just made you sit up and notice that everyday objects around you can be so much fun . . . I'm going to Jumpoffice today and see what happens.:P
It was fantastic!!!
I wish i was as nimble on my pins as that. I have had too many riding accidents to be able to spring about like that! I would still be intrested in any groups that start..for photograpic opportunities etc.
I watched it, I must admit I was impressed by some of the heights and distances jumped - although I reckon the camera angles helped to promote them.
However, I couldn't help but feel it was something for prepubescent boys and a little bit childish really. Also I didn't notice any girls joining in?
I think you'll find that Toby Foster is the king of Parkour in Sheffield......
I just tried freejuming down the stairs at work and am on my way to casualty.
welshie2020 07-01-2005, 15:57 I have known about parkour for a while now and have always wanted to give it a bash.
So now i've sold my bmx i think i will cuz watching jump britain has totally inspired me!!!
Ok, any free runners who are 25+?! Cos couple of us may go out to break out legs and embaress ourselves in front of kids.
See you all in casualty.
Looks fun, but just wait for a serious accident involved a child and then parents complaining about such dangerous "activities". Then it'll be banned along witrh everything else!
I didn't see the programme but if you like that sort of thing, look for a film called Yamakazi. It's a french film and is full of this kind of stuff.
:)
there are girls who do parkour, although admittedly not as many as there are guys, i know of no one who is prepubescent and does parkour, and people who are childish about it tend to hurt themselves badly!
there are indeed tracuers over 25, age isnt really a factor if you are commited.
im quite concerned by how many people seem to think parkour is all about injuring yourself in new and imaginative ways. if you are sensible and dont do things that are obviously beyond your abilities then you should be able to avoid trips to casualty. the people in jump Britian are some of the best in the world, they have spent years developing thier skills, parkour is not just a mindless way to mess about and waste time, its a disciplin and a philosophy, people who dont treat it as such tend to hurt themselves. (ok, so thats the disclaimer done with)
who is toby foster?
I was being sarcy about the accident bit ;) But you know it'll happen.
Besides, after 1 seriously knackered wrist, 1 seriously knackered arm (3 breaks and counting), 1 partially knackered wrist, 2 seriously knackered ankles, and a slightly itchy toe, I have a right to worry about killing myself jumping around concrete!
Where in Sheffield is a good place to start?
What I want to know is how do you get into something like this? Where do you start how do you prepare ect?, are there any good website for stuff like this?
thanks in advance
simple, you can start by meeting other tracuers there is going to be a session in sheffield for people who want to get started, if you are interested, simply show up, here are the details
----------"""""""right folks, on the 29th of january im gonna have a session for anyone who is up for it. (there will be some stuffin the proceeding weer but this is my first saturday free in sheff so i figured to set a date as i dont kno who can mangae weekdays)
meeting infront of the arts tower at the university of sheffield (the 60s tower block, if you need direction i will try and sort something out for you), at 12:00 midday. the reason why i say the uni is because there is a fair amount of good obstacles in that area and refreshments are closeby. Its a saturday so there shouldnt be that many people around.
anyone and everyone is welcome.
advice for new people
wear loose, comfortable cloths which you dont mind getting damaged or dirty, trainers really are a good thing. while you dont need anything more than legs and a good attitude, some things that might come in handy include a bottle of water and a thick jumper (very handy for learning rolls)
(for anyone who doesnt know how this works, this is not a class, i am not a teacher, there is no cost or uniform, any experienced guys should be willing to help you out and show you tricks of the trade but are not going to take responsibility for any injuries you suffer, if you are sensible you are safe and obviously we will help you be sensible.)""""-------
ok, there may be a change of location for the jan29 jam so check out the local action message board at urbanfreeflow.com to find out more
If you don't know who Toby Foster is then you can't be a true disciple of Parkour....
Incidentally, I'm interested in the "philosophy" behind Parkour, is seems to be mentioned a lot but never actually explained?? Would anyone like to explain?
Skatiechik 11-01-2005, 10:06 Doesn't seem anything new to me, just a combination of gymnastics (balance) and some climbing in an urban area.
skatiechik, thats like saying snowboarding is the same as skatboarding except without the weels
dug, i cant be assed to type a whole explanation of pakours philosophy for you, its a very personal thing and varies from person to person but is usually concerned with freedom and escape from the boundries and restrictions which society and life ina city environment places on us, as for it never being explained..... have you tried looking on a parkour website??
and as for toby foster............. whatever.
battouchan 12-01-2005, 11:10 Hey guys.
I only saw half of the program, ive seen parkour vids on the net before so most of the stuff just seemed a repeat of that. But the control over thier bodies that some of those guys have is amazing.
I dont really know much about the parkour philosophy, but it isnt really about it being a new idea. It just another way of doing things. You will always have a crossover, For example if you want to learn to do flips you have a choice, gymnastics. trampolining, acrobatics, martial arts, parkour, snowboarding etc.
Im not really into all this disciple and philosphy stuff, id just prefer to practice sommersaults in the gym :-) But respect to the guys who do parkour.
btw. who is toby foster?
skaterben182 12-01-2005, 11:35 hey ppl, i watched jump britain and decided to try it out. i looked for some sort of site (hoping for something local) and found this. i just read through the comments n i really like the idea of the session on the 29th around the odeon/uni area, im definately gona b ther with a few m8s who r interested too. were all skaters (2skateboarders/2 inliners) age 16 from sheffield n we live extreme lives.
one question about parkour...i take it that you can't free-run when its wet and slippery and its looking quite rainy this month so could the session on the 29th be cancelled likely? i'll keep checking the forum for changes about the day. weve been practising whenever we can this week lol, at school - catleaps walls and jumping on/off stuff n balancing.
hope the session plans work out ok, cya there. Ben.
ps - any links i mite wanna check out for info/pics/vids anyone could give me...?
ok, the jam is on the 29th, bad weather will not cause the session to be cancled (tho it will probably make most people drop out i will still be out at least, there is some covered action to be had, and if not then can still meet up with other people.)
for further info about jan29 chack out the message boards on northerparkour.com and the local action message board on urbanfreeflow.com (both have videos and pics you can see)
I watched Jump Britain and I thought that Sebastian guy was amazing.
For anyone who missed the programme it's on E4 again tomorrow (Sat 15th) at 8pm.
Eyelikedurt 10-02-2005, 19:04 Hi!
Like most people, i saw the programmes on TV about Parkour and loved it. What im trying to do now is find out where the scene is in Sheffield because i want to take a shed-load of photo's of people doing it ( i might try too if someone will hold my camera ). Once this is done, the images will be sent to any PK mag i can find as a shameless attempt at getting something published that's worth looking at.
Volunteers?
yea saw that thing abit ago, was never into the jumping over stuff, but the backflips, and aerials got me intrested, but cant find an open gym to go to :(
skaterben182 14-02-2005, 01:38 hi again ppl,
just wanted to reply to 'Eyelikedurt' 's last post about the "parkour scene in sheffield" lol, the post-'JumpBritain' scene has just been created for us lot in/around Sheffield (inc York (YPK crew) lol) to make parkour available for ANYONE to get started with, the organisers (btw - great job, guys!) such as sleap etc, get all the kids who just wanna go out there and "do parkour" together on these great (now fortnightly) gatherings, which started as a jam on the 29th of jan (often referred to as "the thing on the 29th") the first one since then woz on the 12th, and it carries on every two weeks, 12:00 on the odeon complex in Sheffield, you literally cant miss us. its a regular jam for anyone who's interested in "doing pk" and it really is a great day out, we have such a laugh, meet new people that you share interests with, all the guys that go along are sound, its just great. i am not one of the organisers, im just trying to spread the word, get more people along. in the exact words of the almighty sleap, "everyone welcome regardless of age, gender, skill or hair colour" and he means it! there were even ginger people there last time...
anyways, if anyone has any questions, just email me (adress below), and anyone who was at the jam on the 29th, add me on msn: my_thoughts_send_me_on_a_carousel (at) hotmail.com
cya'll at the fortnightly get-togethers, hopefully.
Ben!
ps - does ANYONE have any photos or video footage from the 29th, or know where i can get some of it? ive been trying to get hold of some but ive not found any anywhere so far. thanks.
