c_datexpress 07-01-2005, 10:58 I have asked this question before as I would love to go to a soul night in Sheffield - i can't believe a city the size of this doesn't have one.... such a shame!
i have just found Richard Searling's radio show on Smooth FM North West - have to listen to it on the internet - on a Sunday afternoon 2-5... it's fab!
anyone got any good soul cd's or mixes to discuss?
Check out the Showroom Cinema Bar, they supposedly have a psychedelic soul night on friday nights. don't know if it's any good though, never been....
SpiderPete 09-01-2005, 22:11 Did Richard Searling have a soul show on Radio Hallam many many years ago, more like decades ago.
I will have to hunt out Smooth FM on the Internet.
I have tons of soul cd`s, its something that will never go away with me, even now I play the stuff from decades ago.
c_datexpress 10-01-2005, 10:58 that's right - he's been a bit of a leading light on the soul front for many years so i understand.
i have only recently been introduced to soul music and i have to say it's a bit addictive...
check out www.phuturesolerecordings.com - the Billy Davidson mix 1 is just outstanding!
am scrabbling around trying to get more cds etc but there doesn't seem to be any music shops in sheffield with a good soul section - if there is will someone please tell me where?? best bet seems to be the internet. i have a Dennis Taylor cd on order - no idea what it's like but it's been recommended to me.
any other recommendations?
my other faves at the mo are Modern Soul Connoisseurs put together by Richard Searling (and he's just about to or just has realeased another compilation) and also Sweet Taste of Sin - another good compilation.
c_datexpress 10-01-2005, 11:19 i am also really enjoying the newer soul funk stuff - great for a night out!
bassplayer 10-01-2005, 11:37 Did Richard Searling do Soul Source on Saturdays at 6 - 8pm on Radio Hallam in the early 80's?
c_datexpress 10-01-2005, 11:50 yes and it's now on Smooth FM North West... from Sheffield only available on the t'internet! great show though - good music and really informative too - a good listen for a sunday afternoon.
bassplayer 10-01-2005, 12:05 OMG !!!!!!!!!!
This guy was one of the main reasons that got me seriously into music 365/year and still going at the same rate. He was famous for the 7.30 Jazz Breaks, introducing me to guys like Marcus Miller, Dave Grusin, Harvy Mason, Unlimited Touch, Greg Philangaines etc....................
nuff' of the reminis' what time is he on?
c_datexpress 10-01-2005, 12:10 2.00 - 5.00 on a Sunday afternoon... here's the link to the website:
http://www.smoothfm.com/schedule/index.cfm?day=Sunday
there's a good biography on there too all about him.
bassplayer 10-01-2005, 15:14 c-datexpress
many many thanks can't wait until Sunday for SS so I will tune in and get a listen of the station tonight to check it out (80's lingo)
thanks
the showroom on a friday is top notch. Not really psychadelic more soul jaz with a few hip hop tracks. Very good and cheap cocktails. Theres also a northern soul night on at the abbeydale cinema on abbeydale road called KGB. Meant to be good but i havent checked it out yet.
c_datexpress 10-01-2005, 17:28 gaztat - do you know when that is? i would love to go although northern soul isn't really my thing (from what i've heard so far) but am willing to give it a try!! got to be better than the stuff played in a lot of places!
carcrash 10-01-2005, 17:29 I do a northern soul night from time to time called soul food
c_datexpress 10-01-2005, 17:31 where's that carcrash?
SpiderPete 10-01-2005, 22:41 I adore Northern Soul, and yes where is carcrash.
Richard Searling was the main reason why I got into soul music, he was one show on Radio Hallam that I never missed, now he is on the internet on SmoothFM, I cannot wait until Sunday now.
Also see Andy Peebles is on there every night, wow --- wot more can u ask for.
As for soul music in shops, Sheffield is terrible, but Manchester is good for it, the shops are on back streets, but I guess London is now the place to go.
I did find a brill Northern Soul website as well that has songs on it to listen to :
http://www.vault-of-soul.co.uk/audio.htm
c_datexpress 10-01-2005, 23:29 the Andy Peebles show - is that good? will give it a listen!
why aren't more people in sheffield into soul?!! manchester music shops (especially HMV - can you believe it?!) have got quite good soul departments... why did Manchester get it and not Sheffield?
come on people of sheffield don't let manchester do everything better than us!!
i even went to a small record shop in Stamford, Lincs and they had a great soul section.
nice to find some fellow soul music fans on here - the soul music forums seem a bit too intense for a newy!!
any help and direction is greatly appreciated - once you get it you've really got it i think!
evesoul5 11-01-2005, 01:35 The best and most reliable guides to northern soul events are:-
www.northern-soul.com
www.soul-source.co uk
www.soulsurfin.currantbun.com
www.soulfulkindamusic.com
I've been into northern soul for many years and cannot believe there is not much going on in Sheffield. Hope you find something.
KTF
sheffbag 11-01-2005, 07:03 there is a soul night every bank holiday Sunday at Banus in Sheffield. Gets VERY busy and plays quality tunes
bassplayer 11-01-2005, 11:33 My daughters, 15 and 10 seem to think that I am stuck in the past regarding the type of music that I love, but these days you do not get the individual musical ability of the players as in the late 70's up to the mid 90's.
I recently went to Dubai and found an album by Fourplay, (4Play) with musicians that I had heard from on 80's SoulSource. I could not find it anywhere in Sheffield. I guess that makes it a very expensive CD.
Jazz Funk, Soul Jazz, Northern Soul, call it what you like; there is so much more to listen to and appreciate compared to some of todays looped and repeated tunes.
sorry about this and I hope that I have not strayed too much from the point, but such is my love of this kind of Music.....(now to return to listening to George Duke Snapshot.......soooooooperb!!!)

Manchester & surrounding towns (most obviously Wigan) has always had a massive soul following - hence the term Northern Soul!
soul food will be on at the earl on Queens rd ( opposite halfords) on friday the 11th of Feb and then every second friday for the next 6 weeks or so ..its always a wicked night .... i think maybe we might be having a night before the 11th but i will have to check with carcrash
Peta ; ) x
c_datexpress 12-01-2005, 07:17 fabulous peta - do let us know... will definitely be coming down!
and bassplayer i couldn't agree more - as i have said i am only new to soul music but i just can't believe it's never found me before!!! someone told me that soul music is loved by social misfits... not sure if that's absolutely true (sure hope i'm not a misfit!) but i do think if you love it you love it!
c_datexpress 12-01-2005, 07:23 hey bassplayer - thanks for the George Duke pointer... just had a browse on the net and have managed to get snippets of the Snapshot album... sounding v nice! will deffo be one to add to the collection me thinks!
carcrash 12-01-2005, 09:55 The next Soul Food is on 29th Jan 2005. We will be starting at about 8.30 going through until closing. Free to get in

enjoy!
bassplayer 12-01-2005, 12:52 You are more than welcome C Datexpress.
George Duke is one of my all time faves', I first bought this album Brazillian Love Affair (GD), a mix of brazillian rythmes and soul/funk. If you can ever get to hear the album, immerse yourself into Side1-trk1 and Side 2-trk1 . ABSOLUTELY MINDBLOWING!!!!!!!!!!!!
I could go on about this stuff all day but hey.........
c_datexpress 12-01-2005, 13:36 well bassplayer i wish you would!... the only way i have got to find the joys of soul and really begun to appreciate how powerful music can be is through another friend who is very passionate about it.
it's nice to find someone else who obviously knows their stuff!
i will try and find some individual tracks on the net which are faves of mine and let you know so you can take a listen and see what you think!
Alexander 12-01-2005, 21:01 Interesting to read about peoples interest in Soul Music. You might be interested in a soul event I have heard about at The Foyer,The University of Sheffield on Sunday 6 February.
It is Jim Diamond who i have seen before ( he had a couple of hits in the 80s) with great Northern soul sax player Snake Davis.
Otis Redding and Ray Charles stuff.
Tickets are available from on 01142228909 or 01142228777
SpiderPete 12-01-2005, 22:17 So is anyone listening to SmoothFM via the internet, its just great to hear the Andy Peebles show again, even "The QUiet Storm" is there again, brings back memories.
I even saw a poster in a pub that plays Northern Soul at I think the weekend, I shall double check again tomorrow as the pub in question was The Alexandria.
c_datexpress 13-01-2005, 07:34 haven't listened to the Andy Peebles show yet but will do.
it's great to hear that there are some events going on - i'm really excited!
where's the Alexandria?
bassplayer 13-01-2005, 07:42 C datexpress I don't want to bore anyone whilst going on about Soul/Jazz/Funk too much. It may not be everyones thing. I recently bought an album by Fred Hammond (gospel artist) who has blended his style of soul/jazz to create what can only be called a smooth blend of easy listening sometimes up in your face music. My daughter went to see him in concert and was stunned to believe that everything I told her about seeing great soul/ jazz musicians was true. I hope he comes to Sheffield cos' it would be worth a visit.
Does anyone remember Shakatak from the 80's
c_datexpress 13-01-2005, 09:00 i had some shoes called shakataks but i don't think that's what you mean is it??!!
c_datexpress 13-01-2005, 09:01 just got the John Legend - Get Lifted CD... sounding v nice! a bit of a bob marley and marvin gaye mixture. apparently he's going to be huge - we'll see!
bassplayer 13-01-2005, 12:19 Shakatak were a soul/jazzfunk band from the 80's. I had an album of theirs many moons ago, does anyone know what happened to them?
John Legend, never heard of him but if his inspirations are B.Marley and co.. well it may just be worth a listen too...
c_datexpress 13-01-2005, 12:24 it's really good - on the third listen now... i would also say a bit Jamie Cullum jazzy and also with a big RnB leaning.
each song is really different and there are some BEAUTIFUL lyrics... give it a go, you might like it!
SpiderPete 16-01-2005, 13:10 Yes I remember Shakatak from the 80`s, they did some fine songs - Nightbirds was one of them.
Richard Searling is on SmoothFM now, and I am looking forward to a few hours of quality music.
theimposter 16-01-2005, 14:19 Check out Spin City Records on Westfield Terrace (between West Street & The Frog & Parrott). The shop has loads of soul vinyl and CDs and is the best place to pick up stuff as the staff know their onions.......
SpiderPete 16-01-2005, 15:02 Thanks for that, I will go check them out, do they do old soul stuff from 80`s, or do they concentrate on the new stuff.
c_datexpress 16-01-2005, 16:02 ooh fab - i'll be popping in for sure to peruse the wears!!
just caught the end of Searling - fabulous... just wish you could 'listen again' as i always seem to miss the beginning. must get more organised!
SpiderPete 16-01-2005, 16:06 Searling played some brill songs, mainly his favs of 2004 and missed some brill tunes as well, shame they dont have a playlist on their website, now that would be good.
c_datexpress 16-01-2005, 20:23 yeah that would be really useful. He also often tells you about new albums coming out and new artists to look out for and if you're not sitting with a pen and paper at the ready then you've missed it!!!
think i might email him our suggestions!
so who will be going to Soul Food? i can't wait.
carcrash do you actually dj it?
SpiderPete 16-01-2005, 21:17 I am trying to get there ..... will see if some work colleagues want to go.
I am not keen on going by myself as wont know anyone.
i am running a modern soul night starting on the 11th of feb 05

sheffbag 17-01-2005, 08:29 There is a northern soul all nighter in Sheffield 18th February near the mecca bingo.

c_datexpress 17-01-2005, 11:38 sheffbag where did you see that advertised? any more info?
bassplayer 17-01-2005, 12:06 Totally devastated, my computer went down on saturday and it took me most of sunday to get the intrnt back up. How was Soul Sauce and is it possible to get it on normal dial-up

SpiderPete 17-01-2005, 17:00 I would be interested in the northern soul allnighter near the mecca as well, there seems to be more soul/northern soul nights than I imagined in and around Sheffield.
Soul Sorce was brill, you just listen to it via their website at SmoothFM
c_datexpress 17-01-2005, 17:03 peter41 i will PM you the details when i get them.
do you think there have always been events on that just aren't awfully well advertised or do you think sheffield is just a few decades behind??!!
there does all of a sudden seem to be stuff going on - it's great.
Soul Sauce is always marvellous... great for doing the ironing to!!
Just been listening to Isaac Hayes and Millie Jackson - sweet music, soft lights and you... what a tune!
SpiderPete 17-01-2005, 17:27 thats for that c_datexpress - look forward to the details.
Personally I dont think they are well advertised ... the internet has found many for me, especially the Vault of Soul website is very usefull and they do 2nd Friday every month Northern Soul at Ponds Forge, next one is 11th Feb, 11th March, 8th April, 13th May.... also their website has some real audio tracks of Northern Soul to listen to.
... thankfully we have this place to advertise it all ... and I have decided to put all the northern soul/soul nites in Sheffield on my website, so its easier to work out exactly wot is happening (I am doing this as we speak)
At the moment I am about to listen to a 1990 album by Perri Sisters called "Tradewinds"
here are the dates for red lion todwick 11th feb, 11th march,
8th april, 13th may 10th june 8th july, 12th aug 9th sept, 14th

i`ve been into soul music since i was fourteen going to allnighters alldayers such has the mecca in blackpool, ritz at manchester, clifton hall rotherham. its time for a place in sheffield where people don`t have to travel the length of the country to here quality soul. this is the reason for starting the venue. if you want to listen to rare 70`s 80`s rare groove 90`s
soulful house to todays new album releases then this is the place for you. visit our web site for whats going on www.modernsoul.net hope to see some fresh faces old friends

carcrash 17-01-2005, 18:08 The next Soul Food in on 28th Jan from 8 pm. Free entry.

theimposter 17-01-2005, 19:10 Spin City has soul stuff from the 60s through to modern including loads of cds and current vinyl re-releases..........tell em Jamie sent you!!!
c_datexpress 18-01-2005, 07:23 Oh I can't believe it.... i thought you said Soul Food was on the 29th - I am not around on the 28th... gutted!
Well will have to wait for the 11th Feb - there seems to be a bit of an overlap - it looks as though we have 3 soul nights all happening on the 11th.... forward planning in future might be a good idea!!!
sheffbag 18-01-2005, 07:59 shouldnt really advertise it as its a competitor to me but Forum cafebar on Division St on a thursday play rare groove and 70's soul i think PLUS the Leadmill is supposed to be playing funk and soul with rooms dedicated to 80's funk and rare groove on a thursday night.
C-Date i've answered the potato question babe
c_datexpress 18-01-2005, 08:36 Sheffbag - don't worry about advertising for others...
all's fair in love and soul!!
it's important info that must be shared with the world!

SpiderPete 18-01-2005, 17:40 Here is a link for Perri Sisters :
http://www.soulwalking.co.uk/Perri.html
http://www.xs4all.nl/~mroyen/Contest/LoriPerry/Lori_Perry_contest.htm
"Celebrate" and "The Flight" are also brill albums as well.
You should be able to find some of their albums/cd`s in Manchester.
bassplayer 19-01-2005, 07:16 In 1992 when I was in the US, Long Island, I tuned into a radio station CD101.9. Iwas hooked. The holiday with the in-laws was great but I spent most of the 3 weeks recording off the radio and came back with 11 tapes.
Went back in'99 and recorded a further 17 tapes of the most unbelievable material and at the moment I am considering to transfer them to cd. They play music by artists such as Chuck Lobe, Nathan East, 4Play, Anita B, Incognito Dave Grusin, Smokey R., George Duke. I think that it is available on the web but if anyone can to listen to it try it.
I remember stopping up until 3am in the morning because the material they were playing was ......OMG! well you can only guess and I didn't know when I was ever gonna hear it again, but playing the tapes now makes it worth the loss of sleep.
Two of their Dj's come to mind Debra Roth and Caroline Bednarski; boy could they play a tune.!!
c_datexpress 20-01-2005, 11:49 http://www.juno.co.uk/artists/The+Sunburst+Band/showlisting=all

bassplayer 20-01-2005, 14:33 C-datexpress how did the shopping for the Soul Tracks go, did you find any good ones?
c_datexpress 20-01-2005, 15:29 was advised to look out for Teena Marie and The Sunburst Band (link above), didn't get either but spent some considerable time perusing the various record stores.
there are just so many... i am definitely going to get The Sunburst Band as my next purchase and from what i've heard of Teena Marie that is sounding quite exceptional too!
have booked in my ironing 2-5 on sunday to listen to soul sauce and will hopefully get more pointers there on things to look out for.
SpiderPete 20-01-2005, 22:06 I`ve heard a few tracks from the Teena Marie new album, and sounds really good.
She still wont beat her best stuff from the 80`s.
welchiewelch 21-01-2005, 00:12 Cor blimey, some proper old soul heads, richard searling, andy peebles - i remember listening to his "soul train" show when i was a nipper.
How do you lot feel about the new soul artists - yer erykah badu's, jill scott etc....i think it's a bit of a golden time for soul at the moment.
By way of a shameless plug - the finest soul artist to come out of these shores, Omar is playing at the forum on sun 20th feb. Check out the notices & events page for more info !
bassplayer 21-01-2005, 06:57 peter41 you evoke some good memories; Teena Marie oh yes she was a babe, I certainly remember Behind the Groove and I Need your Lovin', those are basskicking tracks
c_datexpress 21-01-2005, 07:15 popped into Halcyon last night about 9.00ish first four tracks on were absolutely superb.. got v giddy thinking it was going to be like that all night - then it changed!!! was still good and funky but unfortunately not quite the same.
didn't go to the forum but i believe they have a 'soul/funk' night on a thursday... anyone been? any good?
sheffbag 21-01-2005, 08:10 There is tons of Teena Marie stuff on EBay at the moment go get them.
I work on a thursday night and REALLY want to go to the Forum and Halcyon - anyone want a dj job for a hour so i can go???
bassplayer 21-01-2005, 10:35 The Omar gig looks realy tempting so I may just check that one out; Nothing Like This and Serious Profession come to mind.

"Classic nu modern uplifting sophisticated soul"? Does that even mean anything? I do hate it when people mangle language. :loopy:
c_datexpress 25-01-2005, 11:57 i'm hoping it's going to be modern soul - plain and simple!! i guess the more words they put in the title the more varied they can be in the type of music they play!!!
i will definitely be giving it a go in the next few weeks.
bassplayer 25-01-2005, 12:40 A quality thread indeed; the next 5 are;
1. 4Play - Chant

c_datexpress 26-01-2005, 18:25 Got the Sunburst Band album today - Here Comes The Sunburst - hasn't got Everyday on it which is a cracking tune but is fabulous none the less. it's quite modern but totally chilled and some great beats with lovely voices... definitely worth a listen for something bang up to date.

Hmm, don't get on here much, but just read this thread. Just thought I'd make you all jealous by tell ing you that I'm off to the Soul Night, run by Smooth FM, at King Georges Hall in Blackburn (my home town). It's usually once every 2months and well worth the visit. 3 rooms playing modern, classics / northern soul & jazz funk. £9.00 entry fee.
I went to the Smooth Fm's New Years bash at Blackpool last year - the soul weekender (didn't manage to get tickets in time for this year's bash:-( It was sold out again.
Anyway, it may be a bit far, but it's well worth a visit (they also hold them in B'ham & other places

Well, folks, what can I say? My friend from Leeds & I started the night off with champagne cocktails round at night that his house with his girlfriend & then my sisters landed and we cracked open a couple of bottles of wine to get us in the mood to party. We went in about 11 o'clock and danced till 3 AM. The music was, as always, tops & the place was filled with lots of friendly folk which gave the place a good vibe.
Northern soul was playing on the top floor, rare groove & tunes such as Creek Park (or whatever its full title is) was playing in the middle room (just disappointed I wasn't around to hear Funky Nassau - if they played it). I spent most of the time in the Eighties soul room, singing along to tunes like silver shadow & walking off the dancefloor, only to return upon hearing the first few bars of yet another classic! Boy did my feet hurt!
The tickets sold out on Monday morning, so had to rely on contacts to get me in. Anyway, the next one is Sat 23rd April 9pm. Tickets are available from Ticketmaster online or King Georges Hall. Well worth a visit

Aw, man, Omar kicked. I dragged a mate across from Preston & he agreed it was well worth the trip. The vibe was right, people were friendly and Omar??? His band??? Totally awesome. A tenner well spent
I'm just waiting for Roy Ayers to return to our shores and I've even resigned myself to the fact that I'll probably have to travel to London to see him. Went to see Angie Stone at the Apollo late last year and that was excellent
Thanks to whoever notified me that Omar was coming to play in Sheffield - I may well have overlooked the gig if it wasn't for you!

Agreed, although I only first heard her properly after her cover of 'I Don't Like Mondays' was on the 1st episode of the current season of The West Wing - much better than the original IMO.

welchiewelch 23-02-2005, 12:12 Don't know who quoted you 20 quid ? Are you sure there wasn't two of you cos the person might have meant £20 for the two of you. It was a tenner tickets and 11 on the door.

dimitrysoul 15-03-2005, 11:06 How did I miss this thread?
Wow so many different points to touch on.
Richard Searling, what a bloke.
Like many others have mentioned, he focussed my musical direction.
His first show on Hallam was on my birthday. September 8th 1980, so it was destiny for me to love soul music! Lol.
Every show was religiously taped (and I still have most of them) and has provided me with a wonderful reference library.
The music was always considered, warm quality soul music.
At that time the Northern Soul section meant zilch to me and now I promote Northern events. Bizarre.
The jazz break always met with reverend silence in our house (my parents loved it)
Sounds like an obituary this but he affected my musical taste so much I just have to take this oportunity to show my respect.
So many great records were played on Soul Sauce (and consequently purchased by myself) that it is impossible to list them.
As a promoter (Hustle in Sheffield) I have often considered putting on a 'Soul' event but in the past been burnt so many times by lack of support in Sheffield. This thread has really encouraged me to give it another go. Thanks.
In the meantime you can catch me downstairs at Takapuna now and again playing all sorts of soul and funk from my own collection of Searling memories on Fridays.
Thats been encouraging in itself. Its been good fun.
Can I also suggest looking at Joey ****** Z Records message board. Check out the Classic Corner. Always very interesting and informative.

I spent a lovely few hours last night listening to some old favourites. This morning I can't remember who provided the link. That would be the wine thread that did that ;) Are you there  I think it was on here. I used to go to Samantha's on Queens Rd in the 70's and was never allowed to go to all nighters so I was a bit of a lightweight but loved the music. I would like to have another look around, if anyone knows who it is please.
Could this be the thread with the link you mean?
Northern Soul (http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?s=&threadid=49503&highlight=northern+soul)

I think it was Peter and the Sci-fi link. It was like opening a birthday present, and not knowing what it is. I will be taking another look around when I have an hour or two :) Thank u xx
