Old age comes to us all, his signs of 'grumbling and aggression' may be signs he is in pain perhaps with athritis or something. Loss of bowel control and bladder control is also an unfortunate sign of old age and could indicate an infection or disease. I would have already taken him to the vets to get him checked out If I was you. He sounds like he is in pain and feels uncomfortable from what you have explained. Please take him to the vets for a check up, he is an old man and needs your help :)

Try not to think of the worst even though it will be hard, all we can do for our pets when they get old is make sure they are as comfortable and happy as possible.

We had a dog that was fit and healthy to look at but everything he ate went straight through him meaning he started to lose weight, we found out he had a tumour, its times like this you have to be strong and think about the dog not your own feelings.

Agree with this entirely- the first thought that came to me from reading the OP was that it sounds like this old lad is in significant discomfort.

If he's in pain then the vet will say one of two things- either 'there's something we can do to make him more comfortable and this is it' or 'there's nothing we can do to make him more comfortable' and at that point I'm afraid you'll have to make a hard decision, not just in your interests but in his too.

I'm utterly unrepentant in my viewpoint that when the animals are living in pain with no possibility of things improving then it's time to think about why we're putting them through living like that. Finding where to draw the hardest line is never an exact science and will all come down to the people who know the animal deciding what's the best thing to do in their best interests.

If your lad is already on pills for his arthritis then it may be as simple as a dose adjustment- but then it may not. We have no way of knowing the answer to that any more than you do right now.

my mums dog was like this and it was old age, he grumbled and beared his teeth too. this was due to his sight failing and he was feeling more insecure. Let the vet check him out, they will give you an honest opinion on wether its his time or not.

Awww, so sorry to hear that. Still, he can play like a puppy over the rainbow bridge, now.. :(

14 is a bloomin'good age for a dog, it's over a hundred, you know, in human years, so, bless him, he'd had a good innings, really. My little old lad is starting to show his age (he's 14, too) going a bit deaf, and milky of eye, and he now hates being left in the house when i go out to the shops etc. (I hate leaving him, too TBH) He gets terrible upset, and shouts like heck when he knows I'm off out.

hugs at your loss.
