View Full Version : [SOLD] Internet at Sheffield Uni - How fast is it? Guest 20-02-2003, 14:01 How fast is the internet at sheff uni, and if its fast enough someone should hook up a ftp and i will fill it 0sec movies and games  RPG 20-02-2003, 16:06 you'd get kicked off the network, the admins know whats going on and block the ports (IIRC) Guest 21-02-2003, 10:24 i do it all the time setting up sites on .edu its easy if u know how. So someone should hook me up or if u know anyone who has a 10mbit connection, if will be filled with 0sec releases. halevan 03-03-2003, 11:57 Will you please speak in a language we can all understand? it is all double dutch to me! :D :o Sidla 03-03-2003, 16:39 I'm very limited as to what I can do on t'internet. IRC is totally blocked which is annoying. We used to be able to play games on yahoo, but they cottoned on to that when the whole of the library was filled with people playing games rather than working. Generally I can't complain though. MP3s download very fast. BTW, does anyone know if uni admin would know if I was running this program: http://www.http-tunnel.com/ because in theory I could use it to channel IRC, but wouldn't want to risk getting my account frozen. halevan 03-03-2003, 18:25 Its as clear as mud!!!   fronbow 03-03-2003, 19:32 @Sidla: It depends on how they've set up the firewall, from what you've said, it looks like they're blocking specific ports and possibly using a hosts file to restrict what websites you can visit! Can't you use a different port in irc, or find a web-based client (I'm pretty sure they exist, it's just a matter of finding 'em!) Sidla 04-03-2003, 14:55 I've tried different ports. I think all IRC ports are blocked. Is there any way I can find out which ports arn't blocked. fronbow 04-03-2003, 16:23 You could try running a port scanner; http://www.insecure.org/nmap/ is a good one You might want to search for proxy servers and port forwarding cos it might be possible for instance to tell mirc or whatever irc client to go to port 80 (http) of a particular proxy server, which then forwards your connection to the 'proper' irc port s'worth a shot! EDIT: Just had a look at http-tunnel, and this looks like it could do the job (Tho' you'd prolly have to keep a copy with you at all times, just in case...just out of interest, which school are you in? If you're in cms, then you could try having a word with the tech guys?!) hollymay 22-10-2009, 09:44 How fast is the internet at sheff uni, and if its fast enough someone should hook up a ftp and i will fill it 0sec movies and games  WOW HOW THINGS HAVE CHANGED:hihi: HotPhil 22-10-2009, 13:13 Keeping the 121 chat and deliberate baiting out of threads is the way to avoid a ban. Pook 22-10-2009, 13:16 It was fast enough for me to download about 1000 music tracks over a year while there in 2000. Or is that quite slow? JIbbo 22-10-2009, 13:24 How fast is the internet at sheff uni, and if its fast enough someone should hook up a ftp and i will fill it 0sec movies and games  The limiting factor on Sheffield Universities connection is the host from which you are trying to download.......... You can get in excess of 90mbs at http://www.speedtest.net/ |
