hi , any body out there rember being part of the sheffield mod scene in the 60 s we used to meet every night on our scooters at the queens road ice rink, then travel en mass for a coffee at the leprechaun coffee bar ( broomhill ) sometimes on to rickshaw chinese on devonshire st for a trendy russian tea.
heady stuff .

When I was a lot younger there were two mods living in the flat above us, they both had scooters and wore the green parka's. One of them Paul was very tall and he once sat my older brother on his shoulders and then put the parka on, strolling out of the driveway he stood on the pavement and two little old dears coming up the road suddenly changed direction and headed back downhill. I can still remember the telling off my brother got for that 'little' joke.
Many years later working at Northern Soul all nighters which the mods of the late 70's frequented the best thing about them were the girls, Mods did seem to get a lot of pretty females in tow.

Hi everybody. oh the mods what days those were I started out as a skinhead completely bald doc martin boots that you could see your face in they were that shiny levi jeans turned up above the boots, ben sherman shirt short sleeved 1 inch wide braces met a lad who was a mod when I lived down attercliffe tony lighthowler he was called and he had a scooter that everybody was envious about mirrors all over it kept it spotless and in prestine condition we use to go to the brought inn on the friday night for the music a lot of skinheads use to go in there listening to harry j and the all stars, the pioneers, and so on. But one friday night there would be about 30 of us by this time I had turned into a mod crombie coat loafers straight cut trousers ben sherman shirt and some bright spark says lets have a walk up brought lane and go and have a look in the fisherman pub which was just off brought lane in we goes then all hell breaks loose walked straight in to a rockers pub I use to carry a cut down snooker cue what chance had we got they was in to us straight away mind you the didnt get off very lightly I had my wrist broke quite a few of them was missing some teeth one had got a gash in the top of his head a good 7 inches long the battle lasted 30 minutes before the police arrived after that I thought to myself why bother fighting so I grew my hair and I am now 50 years old and it is still down my back I wont have it cut for no one now.

I remember when it all first started in the 60's Didn't have a bike but I wanted to be a rocker, the mods all looked like puffs to me. Some clearly wore make up, it certainly put me off being a mod. I can still recall one day a big gang of us walking up West St. When we encounted a couple of mods and chased after them they must have been out numbered about 8 to 1.

Well we caught up with one and gave him a bit of a beating. the next thing I Know he is going through a shop front window. It frightened the life out of me and a couple of other mates because we only went along for a laugh, didn't want to hurt anybody, so we legged it as fast as we could, kept glancing back to see if anyone was chasing us and to my horror it seemed as if all Somme baracks had turned out. So I had to move up a gear managed to get away but some were caught.

As a result some of the gang finished up before the magistrates. One of my mates admited he was looking for trouble and was fined £100. hell of a lot of money in those day's. He was working down the pit at the time If I remember rightly. He was living down Neepsend, Not seen him for a number of years now.

Empire garage was opposite Abbeydale cinema. I bought my 1960 TV175 and then my 1967 SX200 from there. I sold it, probably, 1970 for £200.
Armando's is still just off Bramall Lane, went there a couple of weeks ago, just bought a 1970 GP150, in the process of restoring it. Going into Armando's was like going back in time.

Greys West Street is where I got my Scooter from it was A Vespa ss180, reg EAY 117C red. Had many happy hours on it from Brid, Scarb and York, from Queens Road to the La Fab on Division Street.

There was a great place at Matlock to buy mirrors and stickers, we also used to meet at Fitzalan Square outside Wigfalls.

Happy memories.

I made a mess of my 'O' Levels because of scooters! I got a Lambretta LI 150 well before my 16th birthday and couldn't wait to get out on it legally. I worked at a JET petrol station at the weekends and tried to leave a nozzle full of petrol after each customer for subsequent decanting into a petrol can which after several customers would be my weeks free petrol. Just needed 2T at 25:1 from memory. Could never understand the mixture ratios! That was 1969. Can well remember the thing not starting and bump starts down hills were the norm only to end up pushing it back home up the hills of Sheffield as it failed to get a spark. £25 it cost-a total death trap but still here to tell the tale.

I was a mod from 69 ~ 74 and frequented the Silver Blades and the Bowling Alley. I wouldn't say the Mod scene had gone by 68 as we were parking with 20 ~ 50 scooters outside long after that. As for the girls / Lambretta's / Mini's , I had a Lambretta and the use of my Dads Mini but I got more girls on the scooter than with the Mini ! ... I think your'e right about them not wanting to get their clothes ruined , thats why they preferred Scooters to motorbikes. The bikers always looks scruffy anyway. I never got dirty on my scooter ( just a bit wet ) . I still have my Lambretta now and im'e 56 and I still have the girl too and I love em both !

Just flicking through as not been on the forum for a while. When I was still at school I went out with a mod but cant remember his name. We used to meet up in somebodys cellar, cant remember where but think it was via a friend called Terry Fielding or Fieldsend. Remember Terry well as I had a crush on him, had dark curly hair and his dad was a policeman but sadly cant remember the name of the guy I went out with for a while :-) oops. Anyone out there know who I'm talking about. It would have been around 1966.

You are spot on Tom.
As well as being a Mod , I had a Ducati 350 single cylinder. The only reason I didn't ride it much was it nearly broke my leg when trying to start it. The kick-start was lethal.
All us Mods thought the 'greasers' had BIG bikes , cos they looked big but in fact if you investigated , MOST of them were 125cc and a bit up from that just like the scooters ! Many Mods riding 200cc Lambretta's SX's and GP's told the same story about overtaking the Greasers . ( There were of course some much bigger bikes that blew us Mods out ! ) .
I lost count of the number of times I came out of a pub / bowling alley / girls house and my scooter had been kicked over. Of course , I knew it was greasers who did it . :hihi:
I bought a Brand New Lambretta from Dan Bradbury after spending weeks looking at a maroon Arthur Francis Lambretta in the window.
Tell me this .... was it 'Ropers' , a small shop down the road sold all the accessories ?
Spent £££££ in that shop.

Cheers

Cheers Yes Ropers a bit further down the road, the used sell James and Franny Barnett's at the time, they had a garage there to that became Hinchcliffs Lada cars,I started off on the 250cc but soon had a big Triumph T110 that no scooter could have got close to,the GP 200cc scooters were fast though.

bought my first scooter from Ropers--circa 1961--red Vespa which was brand new and had just been reduced due to the weak Italian currancy( no change there then)--it came down from 125 guineas to 95 guineas---Ropers took me up Ringinglow road one Saturday to show me how to go on and that was it---used to go to Frechville rock club---there were only 2 people with scooters me and a lad called Alan who had a lambretta-(he later worked at Inmans electrical wholesales)---the only person with 4 wheels was a lad called Bingo-(he had a ford van)---class

We would meet at the Bowling Alley at Frechville and drive to the bowling alley on Queens Road 30 to 40 strong,I still have my original parka and have now a 1978 lambretta Li 150

How times change, prior to my 16th birthday, most of the teenage lads, in my area, had motor bikes. I spent hours with them repairing, maintaining and cleaning them, Matchless, Volocette,Triumph, all the old British bikes, some times they would let me start them up,and, if I was lucky they'd take me on the pillion, I loved those old bikes.
For my 16th birthday I bought a 1960 Lambretta series 2 TV175, although I loved bikes, the look of a scooter with all the mirrors and lights was something else. Of course, I took a lot of stick, but still loved my TV175. That was replaced with a 1967 SX200, which I eventually sold for £200 to buy a MK1 Cortina. That was a lot of years ago.
I have just recently restored a 1981 Indian GP150, when I am riding it,in my mind only, I'm back in my youth again, but the difference is, people with bikes are interested in my scooter, I was even encouraged to show it at a custom bike show, but couldn't because it wasn't road legal then, but might do next year. Just imagine that happening back in the 60's or 70's.

As a greaser in them days we were more into our bikes than any thing else we loved Rock and Roll Elvis and groups like the rolling stones,it was well into the 70s and we were still the same, but the mods morphed into being skinheads and different things in fact my stile of dress has changed very little since then, I mite have put a few ponds on since then but I still have the same tastes in music now,a lot of the scooter boys could not say that now, once a biker always a biker, its part of your life, the mods were more of a passing fad at the time and they were out of it before they got into there twenty's or so.ours was a way of life that most of us still lead to this day .
