While i was there we had a big big big thunder and lightening storm and it looked fantastic out to sea! If you get chance visit a little village just a few miles up the coast called Great Hemsby - a lovely little place. And of course while you are in norfolk you must listen to the legendary Keith Skues on BBC Radio Norfolk at night. Paul. steevie/d 06-01-2005, 07:46 went years ago caravan holiday at south denes cara-park on the sea front then theres the norfolk broads to tour around on the whole we had a good time but like all places in uk you have got to have the correct weather muddycoffee 06-01-2005, 08:49 When I was younger [10 years ago] I used to go on the norfolk broads with my mates most years, and have been to Gt Yarmouth many times. Although I haven't been for at least 5, the last time I stayed in a hotel on the edge of town as I was there on business. It is pretty much the same as any other old british seaside resort. Has a rollercoaster, and a beach and lots of amusements, a pleasurebeach with big fareground type rides, some nice old pubs, and modern cheap busy ones which play loud chav music, Quite flat, people nice and friendly, night clubs, waxworks museum, plenty for kids, lots of gift shops. venger 06-01-2005, 09:53 Great Great Yarmouth, famous for.......... the Madness video `Welcome to the House of Fun`. As a child I lived near by on the Broads in a village called Loddon, spent most of my time climbing trees, painting airfix models, running, etc.. Spent Saturdays in Norwich for it seemed to have much more going on than Yarmouth or it`s neighbour Lowestoft. Now I think people in Norwich are mad and Yarmouth is another Skeg-Vegas. A holiday is what you make of it I guess. :) muddycoffee 06-01-2005, 10:11 Originally posted by venger Now I think people in Norwich are mad and Yarmouth is another Skeg-Vegas. You're right Venger, but Yarmouth is a good deal better than Skeggy, has some nice old bits too. The worst bit about Norfolk is the terrible roads, which in summer are so full of caravans, it often takes 5-6 hours on a sat in summer to get there/back. There are miles and miles of roads which are impossible to overtake. On a wednesday evening, I once got back to sheffield in about 2 hours. Had the clog down all the way! newdawnevent 06-01-2005, 10:21 Good if you have young children. The roller coaster is wicked. Rickety old wooden type with a brakeman who rides on the trains themselves controlled by traffic lights so they don't crash!!! I'm serious..... alchresearch 06-01-2005, 12:11 Very good base if you like Norfolk Broads and doing a bit of driving and sightseeing. I can highly recommend a trip into Suffolk to Thorpeness to see the "House in the Clouds" http://www.heritage.co.uk/follies/ffsu18.html ... and to Aldeburgh, Leiston and Sizewell. babygem 26-01-2005, 00:51 My grandparents live nearby and have been there a few times. Nice but the country road drive there is annoying - especially when you get stuck behing a tractor! ZIPPYZ 26-01-2005, 09:53 I went to Great Yarmouth last year for a few days. We really enjoyed it. The beach is lovely and the nightlife is good. I was quite disappointed that Ripley's believe it or not had gone and so has most of the wax works. If you do go make sure you visit "louis tussards" wax museum, its fantastic, it fetured in heat magazine a few months ago. The wax models are hilarously bad! Posh and Becks were the best, Becks had a gray wig on! The sealife centre is really good, better than the one in Blackpool. If you're going in the car you should have a drive to the broads and hire a boat. We did and it was fantastic, the steering was quite hard to get the hang of though! We had some near misses. Its a really nice place to have a break in, I personally wouldn't go for longer than a couple of nights though. If you want to stay in a B&B I can recommend Arch House guest house. Zippyz. tara 26-01-2005, 11:40 we went in 90s. stayed on a campsite nr hemsby. nothing going off for kids at all. But when we were leaving we noticed everything was at the pontins site- or near it. went in to great yarmouth -the town not bad but remember my son got lost there we ended up at police station- not very good memories there. the beaches were'nt bad though. AndrewC 26-01-2005, 15:05 MY HOME IS YARMOUTH! But i was born in norwich which is far superior. Anyway, yarmouth is a pretty crappy place to live, low employment, poor facilities, the transport as someone has already mentioned is poor across the county. But yarmouth is great for family holidays, and younger groups can have a decent time here too. ps. Great Hemsby i just Hemsby. Its not great enough to have the prefix :) Lickszz 26-01-2005, 15:32 I like that area of the country quite a lot. However, travelling from Sheffield can be horrendous with bad traffic. rach73 22-07-2008, 18:37 We just got back from Hemsby, great little place, entertainment was fantastic, if you dont fancy the hustle an bustle of skeggy its great, really funny though cos with the Yorkshire accent you get a lot of funny looks lol. If your gonna go do your homework first and find lots to do, I loved it so much counting days down til next year lol jongo 22-07-2008, 18:53 I spent all last summer in Great Yarmouth and not having been for a number of years I was shocked at what I saw The place itself is a very nice place as far as British resorts go and the bars are very good, but the bars at weekends in the summer are open until 6am, the time I was going to work and there was very few mornings I didnt get up to see drunken or high youths fighting and girls screaming on the front, a total joke at that time in a morning, the bars throw out and then the bouncers get straight into mini buses and leave all the crap behind them having said that as long as you dont plan on getting up early for a walk on the front then it is worth going kenthack 22-07-2008, 18:53 try hunstanton thats a nice place http://www.hunstanton-on-line.co.uk/ Snook 22-07-2008, 18:54 I was there over the weekend... great place if you love chavs and boy-racers! kenthack 22-07-2008, 18:57 where hunstanton or yarmouth Snook 22-07-2008, 19:11 where hunstanton or yarmouth G. Yarmouth. There are some nice places around there, I enjoyed Southwold, but I found Yarmouth just tacky... I couldn't help but laugh at all the places on the front being named after Vegas casinos. Baz1 22-07-2008, 19:52 as anyone been to great yarmouth if so whats it like is it worth visiting im hoping to go later this year just wondered if its worth the drive down there or not? If you want a nice beach and peaceful time, go to Gorleston- its about 3 miles from town and cracking place to go. Nice local restaurants, nice people and a beach only 5 min walk (if you book into one of the many hotels that are run privately). There is also a very good amusement/theme park around there.(just can't remeber the name). Heyesey 22-07-2008, 19:56 If you're into birdwatching (of the feathered variety...) there's a good few RSPB places about, notably Minsmere, their flagship reserve. Dunwich is worth a visit - the city that fell into the sea. Space 22-07-2008, 20:03 Orford Ness is an amazing place to visit. It's where they built and tested the first ever radar. The people of Orford never knew what the island was, only that it was owned by the MOD. I believe that the 'Little Boy' A Bomb's detonator was designed and tested there too, but I could be wrong.. In the 80's, the MOD quit the island and was turned into a nature reserve, which is what it is now. The history of that place is fascinating! Just google the images of the buildings still there.. Ally68 22-07-2008, 21:13 Good if you have young children. The roller coaster is wicked. Rickety old wooden type with a brakeman who rides on the trains themselves controlled by traffic lights so they don't crash!!! I'm serious..... :hihi: :hihi: That is true. My hubby took my eldest daughter on it and didn't realise until it had started. I doubt he would have got in it if he had known before. :hihi: whitehorses 22-07-2008, 21:20 It's really awful. DT Ralge 22-07-2008, 21:35 The drive is long - sample the joys of the Farm Shop some 15 miles short of Kings Lynn. Mind the Acle Straight - more crashes per mile than most other places. Yarmouth itself, I can't really claim to be up-to-date 'cos I haven't lived anywhere near for 33 years and it must be 3 years since I went to GtY. It is a little brash with a mile-long front/promenade with slot machine arcades, a pier, crazy golf, funfair (quite large rides), pubs, eateries etc. I have always preferred it to a few visits to Blackpool I made but then that might be because I remember Saturday evening inpromptu trips from Norwich to have fish and chips on GtY market - to die for! I hope it's still the same - I'm afraid the worst thing I can say about Sheffield is that it takes so bloody long to get to the coast and, here, we don't have any real choice of fish in most of our chippies - try skate, FRESH plaice etc. in GtY. (I do hope you still can get good f&c on the market!) Once in GtY. drive out to see the surrounding coast - Hemsby, Caister, Sea Palling (wonderful sandy beaches at the latter!) Go to the broads, Wroxham, Horning. And if you want a real change of coastal scenery go to the North Norfolk Coast for rugged cliffs, (windy) shingle, gravel beaches, flint architecture and birdlife sanctuaries. Places outside of GtY are much more homely and a little old-fashioned, perhaps. Back in the 60's even, Cromer (North Norfolk) was as racey as a Sunday school trip got whilst GtY was for the mods and rockers. DT Ralge 22-07-2008, 21:40 MY HOME IS YARMOUTH!
