I used to love Madness in the 80s, and still like a lot of their older songs such as Baggy Trousers and Embarrassment.

I also used to like Bucks Fizz (remember their Eurovision performance in the late 70s?) quite a bit.

Basically I sort of grew up with most of the cheesy 80s bands like Wham etc so nowadays I mainly listen to 80s music on MP3s and stuff.

Most modern music is rubbish. It's all "Boy bands" this and "Boy bands" the other, and don't even get me started on how I reckon Will Young sucks (and no, it's not cos he's gay before I get accused of homophobia).

70's I was only wee nipper so I pretty much listened to what came in the house and the charts. We owned Parallel Lines Blondie though and that was my favourite. :D

As the 80's hit... I liked Adam and the Ants as did most nine year olds i think thanks to Smash Hits. I also loved Altered Images around this time as well.

I also liked Madness and The Specials and The Beat as most people did in first year high school 1982.

Then I discovered the Jam:o in 1982 just as they were breaking up i got really into them and all the boys I fancied at school were mods! I embraced mod culture as did most people at this point. I also had two good tutors in music in the forms of Grandad Dave from the Rainbow disco... he discovered a pupil who didn't just want chart music playing and he'd bring records just to play me! He got me into Motown and Northern Soul and 60's stuff and i thanked him when i saw him a few years ago.

So I was a huge Style Council Fan - still worship the Weller. Loved all the Respond stuff too.

But I also liked pop music... Culture Club, Wham! were my favourites but I also liked Duran Duran and Culture Club, Heaven 17 and Human League. Liked Yazoo and Depeche Mode. Loved Madonna and Tracey Ullman was often on my turntable!
As I've posted on my Annie Nightingale thread by 1985 I was pretty much lapping up whatever she was dishing out. I must have had the most eclectic music collection for a fourteen year old.

Then I was really into the Housemartins.... :D Luckily enough to see them twice. By this stage I discovered live music and went to see bands reasonably regular for a young teen and some of my mates had started playing in them as well so would go and watch them.

I also liked Aha! I cried at the city hall to them! :hihi:

Sixth form - I was one of the only lower sixth who were allowed to put their records on the turntable at breaktime without fear of scratching or recrimination! The Smiths and New Order remind me of sixth form. The next bands i was really into were Hue and Cry. I also loved Aztec Camera and Prefab Sprout and Everything but the girl as well. Then upper sixth the lads were all into Erasure.

I remember really liking Fairground Attraction as well and Julia Fordham. I worked at Body Shop in Orchard Square when it first opened and we'd have that on constantly!

Then i went to college and it was the time of Soul II Soul, Acid Jazz was just starting... and Madchester music like James, Charlatans and Stone Roses.

I am into Weller, have seen him about 8 times now,he is just a god!!
Madness weren't bad,i liked some of theirs,The Beat were quite good as well.I can't remember too many good bands in the mid to late 80's really, just a few who had 1 or 2 hits.
The Specials,Madness,Sex pistols,Jam etc..were legends!!

Adam Ant? No, just, no! :gag:

Even when I was 6 I knew he was a tosser!

In those days I was into Shakin' Stevens! He was on Top of the Pops 2 the other day and I commented to Mum that you never see anything of guys from his era nowadays.. Where are they now eh?

Always hated Shaky until i saw him smash up a drum kit on some programme and cause anarchy. Didn't he have a serious drink problem? That door was only green as he'd thrown up on it. :gag:

Adam and the Ants were fantastic panto.:D It's a shame Stuarrt has had to cope with demons in later life. He was beautiful when he was younger.

Still love Kings of the wild frontier and Antmusic would always be guaranteed to get me dancing!

Just as an aside re Shakin Stevens:

:o
Little Britain star Matt Lucas has revealed that the vision of 1980s loveliness that was Wales' very own version of Elvis Presley, used to float his pre-teenage boat.

Matt told Attitude that staring at a poster of Shakin' Stevens was one of his first homo memories:

“The first time I’d an inkling I was gay was looking at that picture when I was seven.

“I’m sure the thoughts weren’t sexual, but there was something there."

:quote from Pink News. Ooh Matt no!
