Annie Nightingale's request show will be back for one night only! For those of us of a certain thirty something age - this lady got us through Sunday night's homework! I used to sit there with my C90 tape allowing her to educated me in the ways of music. She is one of my heroines and one of the people definitely responsible for shaping my music taste.
She taught me about Joy Division, The Smiths, The Wedding present, Prefab Sprout, Aztec Camera and Half man half biscuit to name but a few. I'd always listen faithfully and it was rarely chart stuff that she played. She'd do a breathy "hi" over the intro to the first record of the show which i mostly remember over 'Living on the ceiling' by Blancmange - that song was perfect for it! (and is the one I've requested!)
I was lucky enough to have some personal messages from her on my space.
She's on at weird oclock now playing blockbeats or summat but for me she will always be 7-9pm Sunday night.
So do you have any Annie memories?
Ousetunes 01-09-2007, 10:44 Thanks for the info, Edna.
My memories of Annie are pretty much like yours but in my case hers was the last voice I used to hear before making my way down to the Rising Sun on a Sunday evening (before pubs opened all day).
Her distinct 'hi', sometimes well into the first song always brought a smile to my face. I'd be waiting for her and then wonder if she'd forgotten to say it. Then, there it was, 'hi'!
Strangely, the show I'd listen to before she came on air was Sing Something Simple (probably on Radio 2) with IIRC the Cliff Adams Singers. This was so relaxing. Chances are I'd had a skin full at lunch and come home for a rest - perfect music to fall asleep to.
IMO, the golden age of radio and inparticularly Radio One. Dave Lee Travis on Saturday and Sunday mornings with his pool or darts quiz. And incredibly, I found Adrian Juste (sp?) funny, usually listening to him whilst en route to some United away match.
Nice times.

EdnaKrabappe 29-09-2007, 19:46 Don't forget peeps this is tomorrow night! I will be listening and doing my homework in tribute to this wonderful woman.
purdyamos 29-09-2007, 20:53 Annie!!!!!! Sunday night homework and the last few hours of freedom before the week started again.
I will be listening unless I forget.
My main memories are the really odd songs you'd never hear anywhere else, like Syd Barrett  doing music hall.
My favourite Annie song (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=5U6jMhjwY_o) is a cover of a Peggy Lee song, which Annie said was her favourite song ever. It was deleted the day it came out so was incredibly rare but Annie would dig it out at regular intervals. The words are so fab it was a very good preparation for adult life. :D
I bet she plays it tomorrow. She'd better!
EdnaKrabappe 29-09-2007, 21:02 Lol. That's cool - you should request it just to make sure...

I've just looked at the website and it says all the requests have to have personal stories attached. It also isn't clear where to least requests, so i guess they'll have closed it so they can plan the show in time. Ah well. It's on my Facebook page, and I dedicate it to all you Saturday night SF groovepoppets.
melthebell 30-09-2007, 11:54 john peels show
annie nightingales request show
and tommy vances rock show
those are the main shows i remember growing up with and shaping me and my musical knowledge, yes people theyre the ones to blame :P
strangely 2 out of the 3 are dead.......annie better watch out :P
Awesome! That's a birthdee treat for me too :D
I'd always listen to the charts, carefully taping things I liked because they played tracks in full, then chill afterwards with Annie Nightingale. She was great, like a halfway house between the full-on weirdness of Peelie and the usual stuff they played in the day.
You could always guarantee some good album tracks, and a great mix of tunes. I've still got tapes of stuff I took from her show. I think there was a copycat show on Radio City in Liverpool.
Then there was always Peelie's Festive Fifty that got taped too. He'd start the shows with his noisiest stuff - that's how I developed a lifelong obsession with The Fall. Then up to the mid-80s there was that Tommy Vance prog rock show on Thursdays where you could hear all kinds of mad, 30 minute long noodlings, and Fridays for some metal.
But the best shows were those where you just had no idea what kinds of mad music you'd get to hear. Annie and Peelie were the best.
Wow...nostalgia trip...:D
EdnaKrabappe 30-09-2007, 14:06 it will be good there is no doubt about it. Happy Birthday Mathom! :D
EdnaKrabappe 30-09-2007, 18:00 It's Annie Time!!!!
This has taken me right back - especially her story about Night Owl of Croydon. How creepy! Good mix of music too.

Ousetunes 01-10-2007, 07:28 Thoroughly enjoyed her show. This woman needs to become part of our lives again! I'd forgotten just how raspy her voice was.
Only trouble for me was that I had to balance between her show and Sing Something Simple over on 2.
That tells you all you need to know about me!
Well done BBC for a good day's programming. (Ed Stewpot should return to Sunday morning breakfast slot IMO.)
