View Full Version : The Mashouse
Just been reading a review in the Metro about a new english restaurant called The Mashouse on Devonshire street it had a really good write up. Just wondering if anybody else had been as this is the first i have heard of the place
I didn't think the write-up was that good, 3 out of 5 is not brilliant, and they did say it was a bit dissapointing onlt having one starter to choose.
The food did sound good though.
Fair point , i know they said the deserts were to big and that in its self would be worth a visit for. Where abouts is it anyway?
I think Devonshire Street is the one that runs from the Devonshire Cat up past West 1 ?
Think you may be correct. If i dont like the place at least i can go to the lovely new Curry house, Chas Chas(think thats what they call it ...my memory!)which is also on Devonshire Street

Devonshire Street is the continuation of Division Street - it runs along the top side of Dev Green.
The Mashouse looks delicious! 4 sorts of mash on the menu! :9 English wine! I love English wine. I've not been yet, but I plan to at the earliest available opportunity. Prices seem pretty reasonable too, and the breakfast menu looks delicious as well. *grin* I'm just enthusiastic because it's the first time I've seen an *English* restaurant - too often English food gets put down, but it's actually very tasty if done well. I look forward to finding out if the Mashouse does this. ^_~
Thyme at Crosspool is what I would class as an English restaurant too, most of the ingredients are from the UK.
Atomizer 05-01-2005, 22:21 Just been to the Mashouse...
Utter Crap and a total waste of money.
I'm up for the idea of good english food, I went to a place in Bristol with a similar menu the only difference being a plate full of really nice food!!!
This place offers a limited menu, extra small portions and lumpy mash! A massive disapointment.
I dont think they care much about the food just the profit from an idea.
My verdict: Its the Emperor’s new clothes!!!
For good traditional cheap food, go to Fagans or the Fat Cat
This is a new English restaurant that’s opened on Devonshire Green.
Really great food and service, I hear that they're going to be open for breakfast pretty soon.
Anyhow, check it out.
Ousetunes 14-04-2005, 07:43 My wife and I went to the Mashouse for lunch yesterday (13/4). Firstly, I was taken aback by the size of the place. What I assumed to be the entrance which would lead into a larger room round a corner, was infact the restaurant itself! It has no windows and I counted seating for 30. If it was even half full it would have felt very claustrophobic.
Foodwise, I enjoyed it. My wife complained that her portion wasn't big enough but taste-wise it was very nice. I had fishcakes with beetroot mash. Lovely!
The wine was also excellent and the total cost of our meal was £33 - par for the course in my opinion.
One big plus was the bottles of Henderson's relish and plastic tomato shaped dispensers on each table.
The underlying question to any restaurant visit is: Would we go back?
Answer: Yes, but we wouldn't rush back. (7 out of 10)
I went the other weekend for the breakfast. The food tasted pretty good, we had one large breakfast (not large at all) and one small breakfast (think kids portion).
We had a cup of coffee each and shared a bottle of water.
It cost £17. Now, as I say the food was good, but man, I want something a bit special for that price.
Ill be sticking to my greasy spoon or pub fry ups I reckon.
Agent Gypo 14-04-2005, 08:59 I thought the food was really good, and loved the intimate size of the place, but thought the price of £21 for two hot chocolates and two main course dishes was atrocious.
jaki_fruit 17-04-2005, 21:17 i liked the food but the service is s-low! waited over 30mins for our starters... which by the way was soup of the day!
Cranberry 09-11-2005, 15:13 Went on Monday for the early bird special 2 courses for £9.95.
We both had salmon fishcakes followed by a choice of sausages and bubble and squeak. Bombardier beer and rhubarb and ginger cordial to drink. All very enjoyable, service was good and food was of good quality. Will definitely go again.
You've got to warm to a restaurant that offers Irish stew.
