View Full Version : Diana & Dodi - what were you doing when you heard?
i remember the evening well.
it was very late on the saturday night when a friend and I got home after a very heavy session on eccy road.
i recall turning the telly on to hear the story breaking and thinking 'i cant really deal with this in this state' and promptly going straight to bed!
whats your story?
TESTPASS 31-08-2007, 12:38 I was watching a B.W film on BBC 2 and it was interupted about 30 min from the end. I sat up an hour waiting for it to come back on and was really annoyed.
I woke my girlfriend up and said "guess what.... they only took the film off to tell her she got killed ! "
pattricia 31-08-2007, 12:40 Im sorry I get fed up hearing about this. Its the same with Elvis,President kennedy, Marylin Monroe etc;. What were we doing when these people died . Will others remember what they were doing when we die.?
PuressenceUK 31-08-2007, 12:41 I was asleep at the time - turned the TV on, knew something was up when every channel was showing the same thing.
Then had to endure months of pityful over-reaction from a bunch of prats who had an emotional overload.
Can we knock this on the head it was TEN YEARS AGO.
I was recovering from an all night party, Well it would have been all night but my mother wanted to go home early .. She was not impressed when I woke her up at silly o clock in the morning to tell her.

nice to see the sensative side of sheffield folk!
cressida 31-08-2007, 12:47 I went over to Blairs, the newsagents to buy the Sunday papers, and was informed then, I went away without buying the papers
I will admit to not being a great fan of the royal family, I think they cost far too much to keep. Diana was different, she cared about the world and people less fortunate than herself. I was deeply upset by her death, And a little suprised for being so upset.
waldershelf 31-08-2007, 12:56 We were in a small B&B in Wales, It came on the radio as I was waiting for my full english. The silly woman who was cooking was so upset it took ages for the breakfast to arrive, I was more upset about the late arriving breakfast than the news.
shihtzumad 31-08-2007, 13:04 i was in scotland at the time, on holiday, kidz woke up early and put tele on, and i heard the awful news, couldn't beleive it, stayed in caravan all day listening to news.
And diana as been in the news, nearly every day since, they never leave her alone. They have no consideration for her sons.

It was the same when the queen mother died. It was on a Saturday evening and I was in our university computer room doing some work and listening to Judge Jules on Radio 1. There came a news announcement saying that the queen mother was dead, and I carried on working only half listening to the radio. After ten minutes of Moby and other slow slush, I suddenly realised that they'd actually taken the Judge Jules show off. I was annoyed because I don't think that too many dance music fans would have actually been bothered that the queen mother was dead.

Did you see me Basil? I was driving a white Fiat.
I was nursing a hangover:gag:
Bomberman 31-08-2007, 16:27 Christ knows. Didn't care then, don't care now.
Wizzzard 31-08-2007, 16:29 Came back form the pub half cut and saw it on the tv.
I do remember it. I remember I was home from uni for the summer. I just got up, and I remember seeing the big tv coverage on every channel.
I remembered that so specificially not because I followed her life, and knew her well in anyway. I don't even follow the celeb culture. I just remember distinctively being really shocked to see thouands of people in London, and the big media coverage that went with it. People were crying on TV. Even now, I can't comprehend that at all.
I remember thinking, "why are people acting like that"? I did buy her biography to read in the end, and kind of understand the big coverage.
I was a little bit more upset when the 9/11 happened though. I remember going home straight away and to watch the immediate news. It seemed like a very surreal thing to happen, but you know it happened. Cos I was abroad, and for such international coverage to take place, it must be something.
Swan_Vesta 31-08-2007, 17:10 As with all big events I was on nights:
Di & Dodi die - Nights
Sept 11th - Nights
My next set are in October so watch out :hihi:
donuticus 31-08-2007, 17:21 Getting a dent knocked out of my Fiat.
i was in a b&b in bridlington
S8 Blade 31-08-2007, 18:09 my alarm went off about 8 or 8.30am, I was staying at my grandparents. Radio alarm came on as Hallam FM, and they were playing some old, sad song (can't remember), followed by another - thought it was odd. The presenter said "we are dedicating these songs to the life of Diana, princess of Wales, who sadly passed away this morning in a car crash". I was shocked (would only have been 13), so rushed downstairs and told my grandparents - they didn't believe me and almost shouted at me for making stories up! Grandad went to put TV on and started to cry when he saw the news, Grandma was very upset too.
It was a very odd feeling, being upset for the death of someone you'd never met
discodown 31-08-2007, 18:12 I got home from work, turned on the tv, realised there was only stuff on about which i cared not a jot and went to bed
It was a few weeks after i had picked up my A'level results. i had a summer job at a local ols people's home. That morning i was on an early shift and arrived at work without knowing. The night staff told me.
haddockman 31-08-2007, 20:14 I was at my aunties house, and she walked in to the room we were in and said "Diana has died", I thought she meants someone they knew, but then I saw it on the TV!
blueandwhite 31-08-2007, 20:29 I was on a 6 month posting to the Falklands,tv was cancelled all day.
Rotherhamer 31-08-2007, 23:47 Diana's dead..when did that happen?
andrewchase 31-08-2007, 23:50 Diana's dead..when did that happen?
Apparently she shagged an abdul and died in an underpass, so many have gone there before her.
cloudybay 01-09-2007, 00:04 Diana's dead..when did that happen?
Have we missed something ? The supine bint was always simpering on the front pages of of the Tabloids. I guess she must have done a lot of good work for charity, kissed a lot of ickle babes, walked upon loads of land mines and stupidified the populous.

We remember it well. My brother left a note on table sayin lady di was dead. We thought ok he is on the *iss ( he was stopping with us at the time).I was gutted when turned on radio.
Bomberman 01-09-2007, 03:19 Apparently she shagged an abdul and died in an underpass, so many have gone there before her.
I think that there pretty much sums you up.

Exactly the same. Rolling in drunk with a mate about 2 to 3am or so and turning the telly on.
Diana didn't die that day, well obviously she did but she was hardly the Angel made out.
A nation died. A nation that in the long-term was to rue voting New Labour that same year, which resembled and still does under McBrown the extremely putrid, emotional fakers that Dianas death turned the nation into.
I don't think I found out until about two days later, and my response to being told was basically "Oh, that's a shame, can we get on with what we're doing".
Rotherhamer 01-09-2007, 16:42 All I know about it was that Mercedes had trouble selling their cars because of dye all over the back seats
voodoodanny 08-10-2007, 18:16 I was asleep in a tent pitched in the back garden of a holiday chalet in Cleethorpes.
lovabulrogue 08-10-2007, 18:19 I had been to Mark Devoto's wedding in Dore earlier and was still in the Bar at Hallam Towers, when news broke.
My missus was more bothered than I was...if I remember rightly.
alchresearch 08-10-2007, 18:32 Driving at high speed through a Parisian subway.
There is a very funny Jimmy Carr monologue which uses this! Sadly you'll never see it on TV, even the audience at the show were gasping. (Not me, I was pi**ing myself)

I hate the royal family, the only thing diana did wrong to them was to try and bring them into the 21st century. You have to question Charles sanity wanting to ditch Diana for horse face.
I was at work when the story bloke
In a restaurant in the Algarve, the waiter asked me what I thought about Diana, I replied not much, he thought I was awful, but how the bloody hell was I supposed to have known she died:rolleyes:
I was in bed asleep. My Mum came rushing in to tell me, I said "Oh, that's a shame" and went straight back to sleep again. I'm not being funny here, but her death affected me no more than any of the other thousands of people I don't know, who die every day.
CockneyMafia 08-10-2007, 19:51 Shouting at the tele for cancelling Liverpool v Newcastle.
manorboy 08-10-2007, 20:13 sleeping and i tend to do the same when ever another story or news report about dina or the royal family comes on zzzzzzzzzzzz
Plain Talker 08-10-2007, 20:19 Not giving that much of a monkey's... Pretty much like right now, really.
When I heard, I thought "Oh, that's sad, for someone young to have their life snuffed out, but, *shrugs* plenty of people have been through losing a loved one in a car crash".
dan_999uk 08-10-2007, 20:27 At the Sheffield Show, telling loads of folk who turned up without hearing the news that she'd died.
mrs gough 08-10-2007, 20:28 I was giving my new baby son a feed 5am ish, I used to put the tv on to stop me falling asleep I woke my hubby up couldnt believe it! all I could think about was her young sons having their mommy snatched away like that, I was deeply saddend.
i was in bed asleep and my hubby (we are divorced now) woke me up to tell me she was dead. he had just got in from a night out and saw it on the tv. i thought he was joking but he put the tv on in the bedroom to show me.

I wasn't doing much as I recall being only 10 at the time.
Do remember seeing it on the news though.
I was waiting ror Mum to return from the Hospital, I'll always remember that week Diana and Dodi Fayed died cos within a couple of days of them toddling off this mortal coil, we lost my Grandad as well... So excuse me if I care more about that than Diana, OK it was tragic what happened, but for chuff sake it was 10 years ago!! Let the poor woman rest in peace!!
Highfielder 09-10-2007, 06:49 I was told by the ticket man at Kings Cross station after coming out of the Freedom allnighter at Bagleys...it was about 8 o'clock in the morning and we were just getting the tube back to the car...little did I know a certain section of the country was going to embarrass themselves over the next few days (not as big a proportion of the population as the media would like you to believe though)
MonkeyLover 09-10-2007, 21:59 I was sat on the toilet! We were on holiday in Spain, and my son had just put the telly on. He shouted from the room, and I didn't believe him at first.
I was in Brittany. Some concerned people came up to us in the market while we were buying cheese and said "you are english? we are really sorry". Had no idea what they were talking about, until they explained. I think we just said that we were republicans, so no worries we aren't upset. When we came back to england it was like coming back to a different world of public grief. I am glad we were out the country and missed the worst of it.
okka north 09-10-2007, 22:35 just walked in from a night out and turned on the box and it came on. The next day I walked through Kensington and it was deadly silent - eery. People started to congregate around Kensington Palace from early in the day. It's not seeing the news that I remember so vividly it's the smell from Kensington Gardens of all the flowers as the smell wafted down the High Street and it was very quite for days after.
Treatment 12-10-2007, 08:40 I was doing the same thing that Henri Paul had been doing.
swordfish1 12-10-2007, 08:47 I had friends from Paignton stopping at my house. I remember hearing about it and then considered buying a florists because of all the sad ***** (just put asterisks to save the swear filter the bother) who bought flowers for the death of an overpaid tart.
This is a quite plausable theory

I said what every other 12 year said.. "Who the **** is Diana and Dodi?"
I was lying-in having a hand-shandy when my (then) girlfriend barged in and exclaimed 'Guess what's happened......what are you doing?....'
sending photos to tabloid newspaper editors. boy did I earn my petrol money that night!
shihtzumad 13-10-2007, 22:04 we was in scotland on holiday when we heard the awful news. And she has never been out of the news since. I feel sorry for wills n harry
trentboy2 13-10-2007, 22:48 pleasuring myself.
I walked into the living room on the Sunday morning.
My daughter was channel hopping.
As we were talking a picture of Diana briefly appeared
with 2 dates underneath 1961-1997
which was strange because you usually see
2 dates with a dash between them in obituaries and on gravestones.
I couldn't imagine what the second date meant in the context of Diana.
I got my daughter to flick back to the news ...
It still doesn't surprise me that she is remembered with deep affection.
I will admit to not being a great fan of the royal family, I think they cost far too much to keep. Diana was different, she cared about the world and people less fortunate than herself. I was deeply upset by her death, And a little suprised for being so upset.
I'm with you HP. I'm not saying she was perfect - but the nation definitely lost someone very special. Who is fulfilling the role she played now?
Dont it always seem to go
That you dont know what youve got
Till its gone
Joni Mitchell
There'll be two dates on your tombstone
And all your friends will read 'em
But all that's gonna matter
is that little dash between 'em.
