I have a Sony Ericsson K700i which seriously needs a
firmware upgrade, so I need a compatible service centre to
get it done. Carphone Warehouse and the O2 shop can't help
me, so I wondered if anyone knows of somewhere in Sheffield that will
flash my phone for not much cash?

(Wasn't sure which forum to post this to, so I stuck it here. Feel free to move it if it's in the wrong place)

Have you tried Zarella? Near the top of The Moor. I know they unlock mobiles, not sure about firmware upgrade.

I have a Sony Ericsson K700i i have really bad problems with it... been talking with o2 about it over the phone they told me to get in touch with the o2 store at Meadowhall... reason being it needs an upgrade there apparently is problems with the handsets... I called to o2 store they knew nothing about the upgrade and told me to speak with o2 again... I have been back an fourth an nothing has been sorted... o2 have even told me they have been in talks with Sony Ericsson themselves with regards to the problems with the handsets... when i call o2 to find if they have heard any response the answer is always the same 'No were still waiting' I have had a number of complaints with o2 and still i am left with a dud phone...

I had a call from a family member the other asking me why i hadnt replied to her text... :? which i never received... Calls have gone straight to my voice mail due to the phone not working properly... It really winds me up...

If there is software out there for the K700i please let me know...

have you tried their web site? (sony ericsson's)
is it a problem with other phones? say S700I?

It's a dead easy problem to fix. All you need is to sit the phone in a Sony cradle and download the new firmware from the Sony Ericsson website.

Can't the O2 Service Centre in Meadowhall do this? If you explain to them how simple it is I reckon even their customer service team might be able to manage it (assuming they've grown opposable thumbs over there, unlike the lot on Fargate!)

What you need is version RL2001 rather than R2A041. To check what version you've already got, type [joystick right] [star] [joystick left] [joystick left] [star] [joystick left] [star] ).

From a Google search, here's what the new firmware does:

Brighter backlight
Simplified chinese sms imput
Enhanced battery life
Improved bluetooth connection
No more reboot on sync
Fullscreen images on slide show mode
Now it's possible to delete one contect from a group without deleting the whole group
At missed calls list, it's now shows the time of the last missed call
After java games, no problem playing sounds and videos
Smoother video playback
When in phonebook, it's now possible to change keyboard language by simply press the # key.
Faster image browsing
Battery indicator shows the real status of battery

When I asked the O2 lot at Meadowhell, they told me that
they're 'getting an ericsson service center installed in
January' which, I assume, means that they're going to get
round it opening the packet of a cradle and downloading the
firmware.
If I can find someone with a cradle (I don't have one) I'll
do it myself.

I'd do it myself too, but I refuse to hand over £24.99 for the cradle just to install firmware that should be there anyway.

O2 make my blood boil sometimes

I assume as a part of their Service Centre status they'll flash an Orange K700i too?

I think my K700 needs more than a software flash. :(

Yeah it's the cradle that comes with the P900 that you use afaik.

Am I the only one with a K700i that's never had a problem then? Mind you mine already had firmware revision RL2001 when I got it...

Maybe we should all club together an get the problem sorted... I know for one it is doing my head in...

Lucky for some... if only i knew these handsets had a problem with them i would never have agreed to having one as an upgrade... :(

I've had a K700 for a few months with work and absolutely loved it.. no probs at all.
They have taken it back now so I've been to the O2 shop at Meadowhall and got a new SonyEricsson s700i (twister) which is ace! I've got to say in defense of O2 in Meadowhall that for me, they have been fantastic! (long story but trust me, they have)

O2 at Meadowhall have always been good with customer service, to be honest. When I got the K700i they had only just become the 'i' version (i.e. memory upgrade to 48Mb) and I expected that the firmware would need upgrading in fairly short order. However, much to my dismay that they can't actually do it. The only problems I have are:

1) Bluetooth cannot send pictures, contacts, etc. can receive them and use headset etc, just outgoing obex connections
2) Message inbox can only hold about 12 messages before complaining about being full. The maximum it can hold has steadily decreased from about 150 since I got it.

I know both of these issues have been resolved in the latest firmware, as well as others I have never experienced. I just would have thought that a shop pushing that particular phone as much as O2 did would have the facilities to work with them?!?

I have the K700i (and i have to say it is a fantastic phone) why dont you just go to the Sony Ericsson website and download the firmware? I think you'll need a data cable to connect to the pc (dont think you can upgrade the phone via a bluetooth dongle) but isnt the cable worth it for such a darn fine box of tricks which is the K700i?

Go on treat your phone to a data cable, its your friend and it loves you.

Paul.

(btw, if u aint got one already buy a bluetooth dongle... worth every penny).

You can't update firmware via a data cable, you need the DSS-25 cradle do it.

Agree it's a great phone, just wish I could get rid of the bugs!

If you really want to update the firmware you can do a couple of things, buy a cheap T28 data cable and 1x credit for a thing called Total Server, cost aprox £20.
these are available on a lot of web sites.
Or take the fone to a fone shop and ask them to upgrade it for you, cost £10 - £15
Someone has suggested one but i would shop around

What comes around, eh? My first post was to ask if anyone knew of a good place like this. Glad we're back :)
