View Full Version : Door to door selling
we have a regular guy who comes round selling dusters and pegs and things and we always tend to buy off him. he came round the day only two weeks since his last visit, when my dad asked him about this he said he was doing more work to donate alll his profits to the Tsunami appeal, can anyone verify this at all or had similar instances?
thanks
Angeldevine 05-01-2005, 10:46 I cant verify it but i does sound dodgy. Dont buy them and make a donation your self.............problem solved.
There are quite a lot of door to door scams since the disaster. This is sick, Anyone calling should be checked out regardless of the reason. Any one that is collecting door to door for the Tsunami will most certainly be bogus. Ring the Police. But make sure you ask for ID. There have been many scams so far. I will not donate to anything, Not even a Raffle till I check out the authenticity.
Kristian 05-01-2005, 16:33 So this is the latest scam is it? It makes me so angry that people see the misery of thousands as a way to create cash for themselves!
Does anyone remember a few years ago, this kind of thing hit the headlines, but rather than colecting for charity, the people knocking on the doors selling dusters etc. were pretending to have a mental or physical disability? I believe the term the organisers used was 'spazzing' (apologies for use of very non-pc word!)
My policy is to never buy or sell anything at the door! I give to several charities, and always donate directly or through a reputable source / business.

Well said!
Some gypsy woman once tried to sell me some "lucky heather" and when I told her, politely, "No thanks", she cursed my unborn children.
Thought that was a little unfair.

A gypsy once tried to sell some Lucky Heather to my Mom(incidentally most of it was privet she had picked from our hedge!). When my Mom said that she didn't want to buy it, the gypsy said that she would suffer bad luck if she didn't!
My Mom immediately started to curse the gypsy! I've never seen anyone run so quickly! I can remember my Mom shouting "I hope the wheels fall off your caravan" Moral of the story; attack is sometimes the best form of defence!
I sometimes wonder what will the future will be. I myself thought that I had seen it all. But, When a scam can be quickly thought of after a disaster such as this, It shows just how evil some people can be. Same as some youngsters on this estate, One will knock on the front door, When you answer the door their accomplice sneaks in the back door. I once caught wo at this trick. The Police said they could not do anything, That is because I did not give them a chance to steal anything. I saw two youths walk up my front path, I have a camera directed at the door that they could not see. When only one of them knocked at the door I decided to go to the back door. The other was stood just inside the doorway at the back. He was cheeky enough to ask for a glass of water. I gave him a drink. A bucket full of water that had been used for cleaning the window ledges earlier. I was threatened by the police that if I did that again I would be charged with behaviour likely to cause a breach of the peace. Well Thats life now I guess.
Kristian 05-01-2005, 17:40 I bet they didn't come back to bother you though Rodgers! Good for you!:)
They certainly did not. I had hold of one of the fathers. I gave him a peice of my mind alright
talking of gypsys my dad once bought a doily of one who said we would be cursed if we didnt, the next week my dads room was gutted in a fire and the only things which didnt burn was a ten pound note and the doily , spooky!!
i think i should tell my dad to stop buying stuff at the door lol.
i will only be donating to known charitys from now on.
JohnnyBoi 05-01-2005, 19:08 Just snatch the items off the salesperson and close the door in their face lol.
It is 8.15 now. Just a few minutes from the last post I entered. I have just this minute answered the door, What a coincidence, A young couple with computer made ID selling Raffle Tickets in aid of the Asia Disaster. The prize a car. I asked them if they had a phone number with which to check thier credentials, They gave me one, I told them to wait two minutes whilst I check the number. The number was the NPower switch Board. I hurried back to the door, They had gone. I shouted at the top of my voice. The Police are on thier way, They must have heard. I reckon they will be miles away by now. I wished my lad had been at home, I would have had him dial 999 whilst I kept them happy. These people deserve to go to Jail. But we all know that would never happen.

A pikey doily with arsonistic tendancies, typical!

They are cheeky beggars! Good job you had read this thread today, however it seems like you got your wits about you anyway!
You really ought to call the police anyway. I'm sure you're not the only one they'll be calling on, and if next time it's someone elderley or infirm, you never know how far they might decide to chance their arm...:(
The Police are a complete waste of time . Especially in this area. We have ways and means of finding these idiots ourselves. They will not get the chance to con a pensioner. This is a close area. Already the names are known, It is just a matter of time before they are warned off.

we have people with downs syn who sell stuff like this near us. Once i had a guy come round claiming to no my hub, tryin 2 sell me a playstation - i said come back later when hes home and the guy never returned - i worry about old people who let strangers in
There are many genuine people that sell door to door, But these days it is so easy to forge I.D. It is best not to deal with any canvasser.

or get them to make app if its something youre interested in, and have a secong person there. I was a door canvasser for two years and a manager for a year - so ive seen all sorts. I always used to tell old people to lock up after me and made sure they checked my id. If they wanted to sign up with me and looked vulnerable id encourage a neighbour or family member to be there.
Ive heard of door canvassers being assaulted physically or sexually and cars being wrecked or stolen. Obviously depends on what type of estates you worked. Prob where i get my opinions of certain council estates.
but all in all, door canv opens ur eyes and is good experience
Like everything else, It is spoiled by the few. I know a young guy that worked for a well known Electricity Company, Won't mention the name of it, Because, This guy was dragged into a house lived in by smack heads. He was badly beaten and even raped. Door to Door has become a dangerous job now. Like you say, Some Estates are best avoided
NatalieSheff 06-01-2005, 12:58 bless him, i got trapped in a house with drunk people in doncaster near the asda for 3 hrs. I had to have few days off - scared life outta me. thought i was safe cos a sober lady let me in and seemed quite sane on the door b4. my phone signal went - scary
I have a friend that works for Southern Electric. They work in pairs. One goes to the house the other waits outside. The trouble working in pairs is the wages are cut in half. Life should not be this way but, There are so many evil people out there now. I can say, As many do and you may be tired of hearing this. Times like this did not exist. Safety was not in the equation when canvassing, People were safe, Just as kids were safe on the streets at night, People could go out and not bother to lock their doors. Well. I doubt if we will ever return to that again.
