View Full Version : Bin emptying in Sheffield?
Before christmas there was a note on top of our bins stating that because of the christmas holidays our next collection would be the 4th january and then every tuesday onwards, i got onto my street last night and all the bins were still full and very overflowing (as you can imagine with the christmas period) and now overnight some bags have been torn open by animals, our street looks like shi* now with rubbish all over the place.
Does anyone else find that the binmen in sheffield don't come on the day that they say they will??
phone onyx and ask why they didn't come and when they will.
They do occaisionally miss a collection, but normally come the next day.

My black bins get picked up on time except for 1 week in the last 2 years when they came the next day.
We have a blue bin for paper and that has only been collected on the correct day once in the last year (or since they started).
But why worry, your Chief Executive got a knighthood for doing the job so well!
I shall check at lunch then :D
Ousetunes 05-01-2005, 09:53 I find it unacceptable that we had to wait so long over Christmas/New Year to get our bins emptied. Frankly, if it wasn't for the fact that I've got an area at work where I can dump my rubbish (and pay extra for its removal) then there would have been cardboard boxes, packaging, empty food containers and delightful soiled nappies lying outside my house for the last fortnight. (I DID however recycle dozens of empty Stella and Becks bottles.)
And I can just imagine piling up black sacks on top of my wheelie bin and finding them still there after the binmen had been round.
This is not a jibe at the binmen per se; but at the busiest time of the year it just isn't good enough. Next time I'll dump my black sacks on the town hall steps. It needs sorting. Oh, and don't forget to look forward to our increases in the council tax.
It must be an area problem, I live within the Shirecliffe Area. I cannot grumble at the bin men. I think we in Shirecliffe have the best. They do all they can to assist, Even to the extent of going to the back of the houses to get the bins if the householders have forgotten to put them out, As long as people do not make a habit of this. I do find that since privatiztion of this service we have got a better service. But as I say, We have a good crew in our area, It may well be that is why we have no problem here.
I must be lucky.
The Towers gets it's bins emptied when they say they'll empty them 99% of the time. It's always been hairy around Christmas, but they come when they'll say.
We've always cleared the bins for Christmas, and then split the rubbish - the rottable stuff / food goes in strong bags that go in the wheelie bin. Paper, packaging, empty bottles, etc. goes in separate bags that then sit in the garage, unless it's recyclable. The day of the collection I put the bin out and fill any space up with the 'dry rubbish'.
It's a pain in the arse to do but it's not the end of the world.
Although I guess with just two people and two cats it's easier for us than if we had a family.

Ousetunes 05-01-2005, 10:18 Joe, my problem was exacerbated by the fact that
a) I have two daughters aged 2 and five;
b) their birthdays were 1st December and 25th November respectively; and
c) there was Christmas too!!
That's a lot of packaging, never mind the day-to-day refuse that we create.
Alas, there's good news on the horizon. The rubbish we created and moreover, the rising cost of having to fund this time of the year is as good a form of contraception than Mates or Durex could ever be!
One of my neighbours has five kids, Has a lot of relations that buy the kids presents. Yet she manages the rubbish. Packing paper and card are very easy to dispose of. Then we have all the other forms of recycling. Her bin is usually half full when the bin men come to empty it. The Blue bin with paper is full, But again it is emptied regular. The compost heap is a good one. Though this can be difficult for some people. Bottles and cans are also kept seperate and collected every month by a recycling company.
Our bin day is on Monday:( there was no collection on the bank holiday after Christmas so two weeks rubbish was collected on the 3rd. We have two young children, the usual family visits and meals and after removing all paper and card as well as over 40 beer and wine bottles still had five black sacks to put out. These were taken, the bin men or should that be refuse collectors are great and do an excellent job. My point is that as a so called switched on recycling city when most homes generate more recyclables the authority dont seem to be assisting residents at all. I would like to recycle the tree but am not prepared to by cleaning needles out of my car until this time next year. The whole set up needs looking at IMO.
JonJParr 05-01-2005, 12:37 Anybody else think we should get a council tax rebate when they miss a collection? That'd make sure they turned up! After all that's what our council tax is supposed to pay for!

i have 4 kids and didnt have any problems with bins over xmas and new year - like Rodgers says, sort it out and recycle and there isnt a problem. Our bins were emptied after 2 weeks on monday - my neighbour with just a dog was asking if she could use my bin!!!
sorry to hear others had problems.
Maybe some people do get problems over the holidays, But, I do think that we get a good service. There are parts of the country where the service is atrocious. I have a friend in Birmingham. His bins are emptied every two weeks. If there are any extra bin bags for example xmas time. An extra charge is made for extra rubbish. There are many other services in Sheffield that could do with improving, But, I will never complain about Onyx. As I said previously, It may be that the crew that serve my area are exceptional. Try ringing Onyx and tell them. If one area is satisfied and get a good service, Why doesn't your area get the same service. If you have a bad crew they may get a kick up the butts. On a different subject. The only complaint I have is the Mail. Even most of this gets recycled. Junk Mail. This seems to get a better priority than regular and important letters.
Well i just spoke to them and they said they didn't even recognise my road name on there system which is quite strange cos the greystones estate isn't really that small??
They have promised to get someone out to do all our roads tomorrow so i guess im just gonna have to wait and see!!!
I remember when I was little, my mum always used to boil the kettle when she saw the bin lorry, and the bin man used to fill his flask up when he came for our bin.
We never had any problem having any rubbish removed, even in black bags, but with the other houses they sometimes didn't even bother taking the stuff that's in the bin.
Bribary, but it worked :)
DanSumption 17-03-2005, 05:34 We must have a particularly bad crew in our area - about once every four months they forget to do our stretch of road, and I have to ring Onyx up to get them back the next day (although sometimes the extra rubbish gets left out until the next week). Not to mention the fact that when they do come, I sometimes have to search a couple of hundred yards in either direction to find where they've left the bin.
redrobbo 17-03-2005, 22:20 The Onyx crew where I live (Lowfield/Olive Grove) are so keen they arrive at 05.40 most Tuesday mornings! I usually nod off to sleep again, until 30 mins later when they then drive down the street at the back of the house! However, musn't grumble -have never been missed once.
Apparently they're on strike next week too.
At least I know they're definitely on strike on our day, Wednesday.
Plus, where do Onyx expect us to keep all these bins they've bestowed upon us? Black one, blue one which they seem reluctant to empty and now a green one which is hardly gonna get used in our garden...
... now a bottle bin would be a different matter ;)
Have lived in s8 for the last 5 years and I can not remember a single time they have not collected first thing (usually well before I get up) on a Friday morning.
Great service.

Onyx generally empty the bins outside our house about 6:30am. While I'm all in favour of recycling, I wouldn't want them emptying glass bins at that time in the morning...
