I've just joined the forum as i would like some help, i plan on going into sheffield in the coming weeks and i would like to know if there is any record stores within the city center as i've never really been anywhere other than meadowhall so i would'nt really know where to start.

If there is any that you may happen to know of could you mention the store(s) name along with where they are located as that would help alot, thanks.

Thanks for all of quick replys & suggestions. Is the '' Jacks '' far away from the train station?

Jacks is definately the best.

Well it was, but ever since that golden eagle came in through the window and flew off with all the Reggae 12 inchers, I haven't felt like going in quite so often.

No-one's mentioned Rare'n'Racy yet - is that still there?

I would guesstimate at about 20 minutes walk from the station. Up howard street, thro the subway, up Surry st past the Town Hall, up barker's pool onto Division street.

The best one is Spin City Records on Westfield Terrace just round the corner from Jacks. Westfield Terrace runs between 2 main roads- West St/ Divison St...look for it on Google maps.....tons of 7 inch singles and LPs...the only place for vinyl in Sheffield

Don't bother go to Nottingham and ask at tourist information for Selectadisc (may now be called Sister Ray). When I went the girl gave me a map and marked the location of the shop. Much better store. Nothing in the whole of Sheffield to match it.

Or go to London.

Another thing Sheffield definately needs. Is a record shop that caters for djs. No rip off prices. Just good vinyl, cds at good prices. I find a lot of shops especially the 2nd hand shops are just way over priced with there vinyl. Hence why so many choose shopping on the net. The thrill of going to a good record shop in Sheffield had gone since the days of Warp and early Fopp. Coolwax did there best but most of the stuff I like was very rare or limited to a few copies per order. Sods law I suppose. I still go down to London on the off chance and shop at Uptown records and UDM. Even the Sheffield record fairs are overpriced and rip off on the prices and that supposed to be a sale.

its all about the spin city for me also. Nice place for a dig and I think compared to a lot of places i've visited, prices are good too and you'll always pick up some gems.

I think i'll have a look at '' Jacks & Spin City Records '' seeing as there not to far from each other and the train station.

I'm mainly looking for 12' singles from the mid 90's being westcoast rap more than anything & with me being from chesterfield there is only 1 small LP store which mainly focuses on dance/trance music.

Thanks again for all of the replys.

Since I have trouble finding any Hip Hop in the record shops here I think your journey may be wasted. I still say you would be better off going to Selectadisc in Nottingham.

You'll probably find a few represses of that sort of stuff in HMV.

But then again you could just order them off the website with free delivery

I guess it would be a waste if you have already checked there selection of vinyls which they stock, i've just looked on the Selectadisc site and it isn't really the type that i'm after as it's just the usual rap artists i'm more into the underground scene really, thanks though.

All of the HMV stores which i've been in mainly stick with dance music more than anything, i guess i'll just have to keep to ebay seeing as there isn't to many places around here which happen to stock the type of music which i'm after, thought i'll try anyway as shipping from the usa soon adds up when it's around £7 for 1-2.

Good to know about the local stores anyway for all the ones which have been mentioned.

Um. You won't find underground here. For that I go to London. Deal Real just off Carnaby Street, Selectadisc in Berwick Street.

I have loads of underground and have purchased most of it from the Record Exchange in Notting Hill Gate London.

If you even find one good underground vinyl here I will be extremely surprised. I will ask a couple of Hip Hop DJs here but I know most of them use suspect packages (on the internet) or I get stuff for them when in London.

Just because Selectadisc don't have it on the website does not mean they don't have it in the shop. It is still worth trying Nottingham, give them a call and ask.

I can assure you that you have little chance of finding what you want here. If you are making the journey here just to go record shoppig you will be wasting your money.

I looked at the Vinyl in Sheffield HMV and they have reduced the selection by half and there were very few represses. Most was of recently issued dance music.

For these represses the best stock is held by HMV in Oxford Street the one at the Soho end not the one opposite Bond Street Station.

For Hip hop its London, Nottingham or Leicester. Sheffield does not stock hip hop, or real R&B for that matter. I shall stick my neck on the line and say it is very poor for deep house also.

Deep House.... no where in Sheffield, used to have the odd record at Lowlife & Coolwax, but nowt really nowdays, i buy direct from america, stupid really when most of the stuff i buy is from Nottingham,Lincoln or Huddersfield! But still its cheaper to by direct from Primal Records, saying that... ive started turning to the darkside.... MP3's are the future... makes me sad to say it... but its so true!!

Oops apologies, Forever Changes, forgot eek. Fantastic 2nd hand store on Hickmott road (the little road next to Nonnas). Nice stock and even though the hip hop box is only wee keep looking because theres always bits that'll pop in there. Always expect the unexpected ha ha thats the fun.

The record stores within the city centre, are Virgin on Fargate and HMV on high street opposite the Cathedral. Both very pricey though and best avoided.

Trouble is I am usually shopping for something specific so a little box of Hip Hop that sometimes contains a gem is nor worth travelling across the city for.

Nice to see that nothing's changed then. When I lived in Sheff, a mate and I would regularly make the trip down to Selectadisc, although Fon/Warp used to be bloody good. Fortunately, I live in Nottingham now, so don't have to go far.
Selectadisc used to have 3 premises on the same street, one at the bottom & 2 at the very top. They have joined the two at the top together & the one at the bottom became (if memory serves me correctly) Sister Ray (discount cds???), but that closed down recently.
For underground hiphop/dubstep in Notts, check out 'Ohmygosh' vinyl which is opposite the top of the Victoria Centre on mansfield Rd.
I tend to buy virtually all my vinyl thesedays through www.juno.co.uk & suspect packages is meant to be a good online store for underground (think mainly UK) hiphop.
