I always keep a loaf in the freezer. It has to be thawed out slowly so I put it in the fridge the night before I need it.

What time did you visit the Supermarket? Perhaps the delivery was late or if it was an instore bakery the machinery had broken down.

Why does this happen all (food) orders should have been made up to Christmas an beyond into the New Year... so all deliveries would have been on time... they have obviously messed up on their ordering days... or not ordered enough thinking everyone would have stocked up before Christmas... Doh!

I can assure you that Fletcher's bread, much of it under Supermarket own label, was delivered to Regional Distribution Centres by 0600 on Saturday 1st January 2005.

It's the quality that counts.

I think/guess everyone has been running-down their stock before the end of year stock take.
I make my own bread so it wasn't a problem though the lack of veg at ASDA was.

Wow.. I had the last loaf from Tesco @ Ecclesall Road.. I had to elbow a granny off and pin some kid to the floor under my foot (just kidding) :)

The only downside is that it doesn't keep long due to the lack of preservatives.

I was in Morrisons in Hillsborough on New Year's Eve and there wasn't a single loaf of bread. And the only fruit / veg / salad stuff left seemed to be masses of tomatoes....

It was weird. You'd think there was due to be a national disaster, not that shops were closing for one day!

In our house it doesn't last long either. Nothing to do with preservatives though :)

It is very hard to resist when it's fresh and warm, I've got no chance of ever starting the Atkins diet.
