As sad as it sounds I was trying to think of the first ever record played on Hallam in November 1974.
I did listen to that first ever broadcast from the Hartshead studio and believe it was "You ain't seen nothing yet" by Bachman Turner Overdrive.
Johnny Moran I believe opened that show but I am not certain of this.

Anyone else remember.

The first record played by Radio Hallam on opening day in 1974 was KIKI DEE who was in the top 20 with I GOT THE MUSIC IN ME...it was Johnny Moran, and the disk got stuck half way through!!! Hilarious....have it on tape somewhere

Johnny Moran did the breakfast show for years on Hallam, certainly until the early 80's I think. Nice guy but very very bland on air, all he ever did was give time checks and announce the next record title. Desipite the blandness of the Radio Hallam brekky show, it was better than what I had to put up on the car radio on the way to school!! WOGAN ON RADIO 2. Back in those days he had been on the radio for at least 50 years as well!!!! (Sorry, not a Wogan fan....)

There's some good airchecks of my personal favourite ex-Hallam presenter Roger Moffatt on the internet somewhere. It features him berrating Johnny Moran in classic Moffatt style.

Bloomin Wogans still on Radio 2 breakfast slot, so must have been on air for what seems like 100 years !!!

God wasn't Hallam awful for so long ... I did a spell in London and got used to Capital Radio. They were er professionals compared to Hallam amateurs. I know it's changed now but when we moved back to the area in '86 I had to apologise to the missus for the local radio station before we got here. As we drove up the A1 and along the A616 I kept trying to tune to Hallam and when I got in range there was a news item about a taxi driver losing his hub caps. Absolute priceless trivial garbage! And the ads were no better. "Betta Fetcha Fletcher Loaf" sung by the MD of Fletchers Bread strumming his own geetar. (Someone who used to live near him assures me this is true). Now I know news and ads are not the same as DJs and music, but it all sets the tone of a broadcast and the DJs and music didn't rise far above this level. It was painful. I'm still scarred. Will tune in again when I get over it. (I know they got better)

10 years before that I used to listen to Pirate Radio on AM. Floating rebels defying the law by broadcasting from ships just outside British Waters. The quality of reception was appalling but the music was great. You wouldn't get a commercial station playing an 11 minute Doors track in full. I went the whole hog and bought Radio Northsea International & Radio Caroline merchandise and subscribed to the mag and the cause of "Free Radio" http://www.offshoreradio.co.uk/frabadg1.jpg (God isn't google great) Wanna see a young Peelie? http://www.offshoreradio.co.uk/peel.jpg **** who doesn't miss him?

Accepting all previous posts I think things turned around to some extent by the late 70s early 80s - main (and perhaps only) reason being one Martin Kelner.

In my fifth & sixth form years he was the man we all listened to and he built up quite a cult following on his late nite slot. I remember writing in with a few requests and his continual reference to chi-chi Sheffield postcodes! :)

**** (ok i'll put in the asterisks myself cos i got censored above) i just realised how "establishment" i am now. I only listen to the beeb on radio. where are today's young rebels fighting a just cause that older generations just can't justify anymore? Or did youth win the battle and old folks are a lot younger and more tolerant now?

NM Yeah, I have them on my PC where Johnny moran rings Roger Moffatt out of bed because he's late and gets a roasting on air for it.
Moffatt asks what its got to do with you, well a lot actually seeing that his show was about to end and his was due to start.
Quite funny to.
