Harleyman 28-08-2007, 02:18 Reply to Smary, yes I remember him very well. I used to go the Saturday sixpenny matinees way back and can remember him sitting outside in his wheel chair. Those matinees were crazy. Kids running around and shouting throughout the show. The usherette had just given up I guess. still those matinees were my first introdution to the Three Stooges, The Bowery Boys and Hopalong Cassidy. Your dad will remeber them I'm sure. sydneyoss 28-08-2007, 02:37 Roy Rogers, Cisco Kid, Bat Man, And The Narrow Passage Down The Side We Would Queue To Go In. ' And Of Course Flash Gordon sheff man 28-08-2007, 22:20 It's a shame that the Ritz is now an eyesore. It obviously needs to be demolished? But i can appreciate that there's so much history / memories for the older generation that used to know it as a cinema. When a bingo hall, you could still see the cinema layout of the building. Shame, holds great memories for some and now a burnt out shell. What more can I say? smary 29-08-2007, 17:59 The narrow passage you spoke about which ran down each side was where people used to go when there was an air raid me-and-pippo 29-08-2007, 18:49 The narrow passage you spoke about which ran down each side was where people used to go when there was an air raid Remember when i was at school, we use to sing ... “when i was walking past ritz i grabbed a woman by the” err... um cough. Bet that's not the only thing that passage was used for.:D sweetdexter 29-08-2007, 22:26 After V.E.day someone coughed up enough money to send us all to the Saturday matinee. The covered area down the side was for the cheap seats. You bought your ticket at a little window at the top of the 'Entry' Maybe the first 12 rows were reserved for the kids who bought their ticket on the side . On reflection I can never remember that side passage ever being used for evening performances. I sometimes used to go with my dad and we inevitably sat in the cheaper seats but I never remember lining up down the side Harleyman 30-08-2007, 03:08 Someone posted a message saying that it's a burned out ruin now. Pretty sad. I saw a lot of great movies there with mom and dad. I remember the manager was a little bald headed guy with a moustache and wore a dickie bow tie. He used to climb up on the stage before the Saturday matinee shows started and ask if anyone wanted to come up and sing a song. Kids would come up and bawl out some tune or other which nobody could hear above the roaring and shouting of all the other kids. One popular song was an old wartime carryover called "Run Rabbit Run" This was in the late 1940s. I used to like the Don Winslow adventure films. tara 14-10-2007, 22:50 Does anyone remember a lady called Olga who worked at the Ritz Cinema.? ballie 01-12-2007, 09:16 anyone remember george from1958 at the ritz he used to get on stage and sing [lay that pistol down boy] we used to cheer him on arrodbo 01-12-2007, 14:36 anyone remember george from1958 at the ritz he used to get on stage and sing [lay that pistol down boy] we used to cheer him on I didn,t know his name was george but I remember him very well!!! jennyren 24-01-2008, 02:34 luved the ritz i lived there /well outside/ omg wot memoriese feel sad now .. could : cry y do we have to get old xxxx go:):)d bless Unregistered 24-01-2008, 04:11 The narrow passage you spoke about which ran down each side was where people used to go when there was an air raid Nah - it was where people used to go when people needed to go. It was real success in its hey-day. Unfortunately I never saw it as a cinema, but when visited as a bingo hall, you could tell it was once a cinema. I used to imagine all the good films that had been shown there, which was a bit hard with someone calling bingo numbers at the same time. Unfortunately that big bingo hall on halifax road opened and sealed the death of the Ritz building. Would like to see some old images of the Ritz. jennyren 24-01-2008, 19:47 yes so would i.didn.t go allot to bingo . we moved to walkley/flitted as we used to say/o them hills.. jennyren 24-01-2008, 19:49 sat on back row . with head boy at school xxxx okismoki 24-01-2008, 20:06 yes so would i.didn.t go allot to bingo . we moved to walkley/flitted as we used to say/o them hills.. there is some old photos of the ritz ,i came across them by accident a few days ago whilst viewing the thread did you come from parson cross, they are by way of a link in a reply, sorry, cant remember which one,but if you have the time and patience to view them all,it will be worth it. jennyren 24-01-2008, 20:19 yes will look .. okismoki 24-01-2008, 21:03 yes will look .. picturesheffield.co.uk is the site you want,go to letter p,then parson cross, hope this helps you out. jennyren 25-01-2008, 14:06 would you like to send them to me please ..thank you.. *_ash_* 25-01-2008, 16:37 Here are a few to save browsing for them.
