View Full Version : Get rid of mouth ulcers?
Does anyone know any way to get rid of mouth ulcers other than bongela or rinsing mouth with salt water?
I've got some at the back of my mouth near my throat and they're REALLY painful, I've tried to call the doctors today as I've had them for days and days with no luck trying to get rid of them :( but there seems to be something wrong with my local doctors number since it changed to this new 0845 number, and I dont have time in the next few days to just pop up and wait...
I cant use bongela cus its painful and makes me gag putting my fingers so far back, and gargling salt water is gonna make me spew :(
thanks for any useful reply's, its painful to swallow and eating anything salty REALLY hurts, I think I've got more than I can see, but you ever tried looking down your own throat with a torch in your hand? its not easy... lol
Orabase, but again if you cant put your fingers that far back its not much good. I think you should try the salt water, just gargle with it, make sure you dont swallow any.
Hiya Xavier,
Sorry pal but I can only think of the salt water cure. As the above post says just don't swallow any.
This cure always seemed to work for me
Good luck mate
yeah, I cant get to them properly they're in some weird places, and I'm sure I've got one or a few in my throat that I cant even see... I still need to go to the doctors I rekon as an outburst of mouth ulcers sounds rather worrying... one on your lip is normal-ish from time to time... but I must have got at least 3 or 4 of them :?
normally when they're on my lip I just grit my teeth and rub salt straight into them till I cant take the pain no more, it hurts like mad but gets rid of the things quickly, especially if you put bongela on afterwards
Oraldine mouth wash. Usually I think ulcers occur when you are run down.
cgksheff 04-01-2005, 13:01 If you decide that you can manage to gargle, then try gargling with soluble aspirin or soluble paracetemol.
It will help take away some of the pain and irritation.
I'm guessing we use the same medical centre in Hackenthorpe looking at where you live - I used the new 0845 number last week to make an appointment & it worked fine for me.
I've just tried the number again - there's no problem with it - give it another go :)
t c p . available at chemist or most supermarkets 2 or 3 teaspoons in about a quarter of a cup of warm water 3 or 4 times a day always works for me tried other remedys i find this the best use as a mouthwash
scatterheart 04-01-2005, 14:46 It will be excruciatingly painful, but brush it with your toothbrush. And keep brushing until all of the white skin on the ulcer has gone. Then dab on some Bongela or similar. And it will be a pain like no other but trust me, it won't hurt for long and they will go quickly :) Make sure you give your toothbrush a good clean after or preferably use a seperate one.
I've tried this method and it really does work. I had one a massive one all of christmas week but then i finally plucked up the courage to try this and it worked a treat :)
JonJParr 04-01-2005, 14:58 I've never had mouth ulcers at the back of my throat I tend to get them on my bottom lip where they rub against my teeth. They're annoying aren't they! I tend to squeeze the small bubble with the fingers and pop it (it smarts a little but is over quick) then brush your teeth and it will heal up overnight.
I do, however, appreciate it may be hard to reach the back of your throat with fingers and imagine it would probably result in gagging galore. But, for small ulcers, on the lip area this method of eradication has never failed me.
For prevention of ulcers I would recommend changing your toothbrush frequently and using a good quality toothpaste and mouthwash.
Ginger_Kitty 04-01-2005, 15:45 i tend to get outbreaks of ulcers if i use the wrong toothpaste, Colgate is evil stuff!!!
Anbesol is good for ulcers generally, dab it on til you can stand the pain no longer, they are usually gone in 24 hours, however having them at the back of your mouth does make that difficult, but remember it for the normal ones.
Skatiechik 04-01-2005, 17:27 Whats wrong with swallowing salt water, apart from the foul taste of course?
We eat salt, we drink water - after all its only a combination of the two.
There may be some useful advice in this thread.

nuf_said 05-01-2005, 19:32 Salt mouthwash OK - but spit it out!!
Adcortyl in Orabase - pretty good.
Bonjela - sometimes works.
Anbesol - very good.
If you have contacts abroad try and get Anbesol Full Strength - it's a gel in very small tubes, contains steroids and carries a warning about only using it for 2 weeks. Contains Benzocaine. Works brilliantly - but of course you can't get it in this country - available everywhere else though.
I think that mouth ulcers are a form of Herpes virus and arrive at times when you're under some stress - mental or physical. So avoid stress!

Been to the doctors, apperently theres been a lot of research into ulcers but they still haven't any clue what makes them... how do they hope to cure cancer and AIDS/HIV if they cant prevent mouth ulcers? :P
anyways he told me to get some of this mouth rinse stuff, numbs your mouth and throat, so its all good, removes the pain for a couple of hours...
and how can you avoid stress? I've got my 4th driving test in the morning, Uni exams in a few weeks and I've been in heated arguments with my ex for the last week... stress? whats stress?? :P

I seem to remember Herpes Zoster and Herpes Lesion (or similar spellings) being related to ulcers. It's been 30 years since I read up about that. But my interest is revived by my son's mouth ulcers - about 5 at once and each abut the size of your little finger nail. Now that's painful.
Stress - you've got more than your fair share of stress at the moment. Good luck with sorting each bit. See Plain Talker's definition of stress - 'when you wake up screaming and then realise you weren't asleep'. Love that one.
Hello
My dad swears by this method:
Take a good quality whisky and take a mouthful, Hold over the affected area for as long as you can stand the excruciating pain that follows. You can then of course swallow it.
Although painful, dad says it will cure ulcers in 24 - 48 hrs. I can't vouch for this because I am fortunate in that I rarely suffer mouth ulcers.
Get better soon

and if it doesn't work after a few attempts you won't care anyway!!! :D sounds like a good cure to me :D
franc1987 07-01-2005, 21:34 Put a blob of bonjella on your tongue and then push it towards the back of your mouth. It wont hurt you if you swallow it cos afterall they wudnt let you put something in your mouth that is harmful to you especially when babies use it too. or if u you stand it bonjela on the end of your toothbrush or clean ear bud thingy and then dab it on
hth
Adcortyl in Orabase gets my vote - but it's like gritty vaseline :gag: damned effective though.
Dequacaine is good too. Originally for very sore throats but it's now advertised as being for ulcers. Good job really - I've been using it for them for years.
ltaylor1 20-06-2006, 21:51 Hi all, lol to start after reading everyone's post's. I shouldn't laugh but it's nice to know i'm not on my own. I've got a little FU**ER on the bottom of my tongue, {KILLING ME} can't talk or anything. My way's of killing the thing's are: (SALT) just put it on it, it's gonna hurt but, it hurt's anyway {just not as much} lol. Do that till the whites gone then i brush my teeth {mouth} with (PEARL DROPS) that seem's to sooth it, THEN rince my mouth out with (DENTYL) normally i use (LISTERINE) that {work well} and then use this stuff called (ORAJEL) that's used for toothache, really numb's it {works well too} you can get it from any pharmacy, i got mine from azda pharmacy. I hope someone come's up with a cure soon cause i'm getting fed up with em now. lol
mrdustyfog 16-07-2007, 18:09 Idon't know how to get rid of them but I do know how to prevent them. I had been plagued with them all my adult life, until my husband read an article about toothpaste. Apparently the cause of the ulcers is a ingredient called sodium laurel sulphate. It is in most toothpastes. I have found a couple without it one is sensodyne I think it is the total care one. Also superdrug do their own much cheaper version, but either way just check on the ingredients. It worked for me and it has worked for my son and several other people that I have put on to it. Good luck with it, if you have suffered like I did it has got to be worth a try.
mrdustyfog 16-07-2007, 18:15 I am new to this hope I have explained it properly
Oil of Cloves or Anbesol work in about 1 - 2 days.

hi tess i know im changing the subject but do u have msn
I used to suffer a lot with mouth ulcers - found I got them when I was run down and tired.
Apart from the obvious - getting more rest - I found Corsodyl (antiseptic) mouthwash and gargling with soluble aspirin worked best for me.
p.s., I once had an ulcer so big that I got a cake crumb stuck in it !:gag:
hi tess i know im changing the subject but do u have msn
Yes but it depends who you are really lol
Amyvictoria 25-04-2008, 11:31 I get reacurring mouth ulsers and the dentist recomended Corsodyl mouthwash. I find that it works well and clears them up quickly
RoyalRegular 25-04-2008, 12:19 If I were you, I'd have it checked out by a doctor. I had an ulcer on my tongue which lasted about 18 months.....turned out to be cancer. Had an op to have it sorted and been fine for the last 5 years.
Sorry if it puts the wind up you, but better safe than sorry.
BasilRathbon 25-04-2008, 12:20 Decapitation also ensures mouth ulcers are no longer a problem, but some people suggest it's a bit of an over-reaction.
phantom118 01-09-2008, 22:53 i have a mouth ulcer right at the back of y toung at the moment and its killing me, i can even swallow a drink without pain, i have found that brushing my teeth regularly, using oraldene then using oralpaste is helping a great deal.
iv also found anbesole works too.
hope this helps
i always get them when im stressed or getting run down. bonjela is ok but doesnt help to get rid of the ulcer, only numbs it for a short while. personally i always dab on bicarbonate of soda and leave it as long as possible and the pain is gone next day. but i love the taste and know a lot of people don't.
ii have only once had them though at the back of my mouth and i had some pastilles from chemist, pretty sure they were OTC not precription. and although they didnt taste great they worked wonders!
metaphoria 01-09-2008, 23:14 I've been plagued by mouth ulcrers since childhood.
I don't take sugary things like : boiled sweets; chewy sweets like 'wine-gums'; sugar in hot drinks; or drink acidic things like orange juice (unless with a meal).
If I go against what I've learned, I have problems-so I recommend to try without these things, and see how you go. :)
maybe you should try changing toothpaste metamorphia. see post #22

Metamorphia...:hihi:
Have read #22 and taken note. Thank you :)
lol, hey its late. metamorphia sounds better anyway! hehe
Load up on the amino acid L-Lysine, and take 1 gram a day till the ulcers clear up. Then 500mg every 2/3 days to makethe ulcers just a 'fond' memory. Also recommended for skin and lip health ie cold sores (herpes)
just realised the OP had these mouth ulcers in 2005!! hopefully they're gone now lol
I am a 43 years old. For the past six months I had a tongue ulcer. It would disappear for a few days and come back for over a month at a time. I decided to do a body cleanse. One of the things I also did was to avoid all foods containing "monosodium glutamate, sucralose, and aspartame". After two weeks on the cleanse and being aware of not ingesting these ingredients, my tongue ulcer has gone away. For a week and a half now I've been free of that annoying burn on my tongue. Its completely normal and I've never been happier. I recommend people try this to rid themselves of tongue ulcers and stomach pain, it worked for me.
i tend to get outbreaks of ulcers if i use the wrong toothpaste, Colgate is evil stuff!!!

I agree, Anbasol is very good .. it also has a local anasthetic in it so you get the relief of it going numb for a short while.
Hi
My understanding is that ulcers are a symptom of many things. Therefore a common cure is not going to cut it. Viruses can cause ulcers and may eventually lead to cancer.(HPV is an example). Some viruses can hide in your system and therefore only become a problem when your defenses are low. Such as in times of stress etc. The virus can be spread via kissing. I remember giving my girlfriend ulcers when I was 18. Sorry.
The virus is spread by contact with infected tissue which comes off the ulcer ie the white stuff.
Salt water kills bacteria by a process of osmosis. I use this to when I get tooth ache. But if I use it too much it causes ulcers to appear for me as it runs my system down. This can be quite a juggling act.
I find vegimite / marmite / yeats extract helps. I get a spoon of the stuff and hold it on the site of the ulcer and this clears it up. No idea why. Your mileage may variry. I was told this by my wife.
My herb book says Fennel seed infusionis a good mouthwash
Other things you might try are Eucalyptus oil, Lavender, lemon balm or tea tree
But I have never tried them.
All disclaimers. This post is for study purposes only and should be used as the start point of investigation. I am not a doctor. Use info at own risk.
Good luck
By far the best treatment (and relief!) for mouth ulcers is Adcortyl in Orabase. I have used this for years and recommended it to lots of people and everyone has agreed that it is amazing.
There's only one problem, the manufacturer has recently discontinued production for "commercial reasons" so it is no longer available either on prescription (the 10g size) or over the counter (the 5g size).
This product is so good that it is almost a crime to withdraw it - so I am asking everyone who has used, or would use Adcortyl to contact the manufacturer by email, telephone or snail mail to ask them to bring it back. I have written and emailed them myself but the power is in numbers, the more of us that contact them the more likely they are to bring Adcortyl back.
Please write or email them - and spread the word as far and wide as you can!

I disagree. I've suffered from mouth ulcers all my life (50 years) and Adcortyl is no better than anything else.
By far the best thing is a salt water rinse - it hurts like hell when you do it but it dries them up quickly.
try bicarb vinegar water salt and toothpaste prevents and kills I applied it to me 2days ago and there gone also make salt water solution first and make sure there is next to no vinegar
other wise you could make a mess but it works as a good wash also if you use a dry wine that works too :) & its painful for 1 min
Whats wrong with swallowing salt water, apart from the foul taste of course?
We eat salt, we drink water - after all its only a combination of the two.
it weakens acid salt due to sodium being an akiline metal and chlorine being poison so it will kill you but dont worry its an iportant part of a good dite and most veg is poison

boots do this treatment kinda like 'bonjela once' which absolutely kills when you apply it but it covers the ulcer and kills it quickly. Its like a cotton bud that you dab on your ulcer- it absolutely kills when you apply it though thats the downside but after that its worth it and your ulcers wont bother you at all.
auto98uk 06-01-2011, 08:41 Does anyone know what causes the ulcers I occasionally get on the roof of my mouth - certain foods cause them, but they go in about 10 mins or so, though they are painful for the few minutes they are there. to avoid ulcers try using mouthwash daily works a treat!

Could they be blisters rather than ulcers?

My husband has suffered with these mouth ulcers for years and was prescribed this cream which he thinks is brilliant.
Unfortunately it has now been discontinued and his doctor can only recommend Bongela Igloo, which she says is not as good but is probably the best thing he is going to get now, she even trawled through her medical books to see if she could get anything similar but no luck.
He hasn't needed to try it yet, so I can't say how good (or not) it is.
wednesday1 07-01-2011, 18:12 Gargle with 50/50 TCP/water. Never fails for me.
jimlinzi 07-01-2011, 18:13 The oralbase is very good 9 sold in good dentists !) , but its a vitamin deficiency (I think !) as to why you get mouth ulcers !
jimlinzi 07-01-2011, 18:16 Or try Gengigel gel again from good dentists, great for burns or gum disease !!!!
RichardTan41 29-01-2011, 01:01 Hi Xafier, even though this post has been posted since 2004, I'd like to share a little everything you need to know about ulcer.
You think you have it hard with 1 or 2 ulcer? That's nothing. Try 4. On all sides of the tongue and 2 at the tip of your elbows.
You get ulcer because ( No I don't really think it's coz of stress )
1. what you have been eating
2. what you have been doing with your tongue ;) (nah it's not vaginas)
3. lick germs with your tongue, like blood in the mouth, or particularly eating your snot.
P.S. Even if you cured it using products like bonjela to cure it, that doesn't mean it won't reappear again or even somewhere else
Moving on,
How to cure:
Which product/ way is best or worse?
1. Try having salt of your hands and dab a pinch of salt on one of your fingers and then dab on your tongue where the ulcer is. Yes. it can be VERY painful if you have mistakenly use this. :( After that, rinse it with normal water. You can choose to drink it or spit it, either way doesn't matter.
2. Adcortyl,
3. Anbesol,
4. Bongela (works occasionally)
Another semi-useful way on curing ulcer on the tongue would be:
Use your toothbrush and make sure you have applied toothpaste on it.
Move it gently on your tongue and make it seem like a tickleto-the-tung.
P.S. for the above to work usefully, DO NOT USE COLGATE AS THEY HAVE LOTS OF CHEMICALS, THAT IS WHY IT IS VOTED TO BE THE BEST TEETH-WHITENER!
Do not use Listerine either. Trust me, there are no blue or purple water-dudes who wash your teeth and make your mouth explode.
P.S.S. - Use normal toothpaste like Natural ones you can trust.
Hope this guide has been useful :P
RichardTan41 29-01-2011, 01:04 P.S.S.S. Avoid deep fried, fried or grilled food as they tend to use a lot of vegetable/ canola oil and can really screw up the Screwed-up i.e. ulcer :)
technofish 29-01-2011, 18:21 i think ive work out how you get ulcers, you see i bite the inside of my cheeks all the time and tend to ulcers in the places i bite. so i believe that ulcers occur when you get a cut in your mouth and the cut gets dirty (food gets in) so i guess that to prevent them you kind of have to avoid and cuts. i usually brush my ulcers with a toothbrush and then gargle lots of mouthwash, that usually does the trick  hope thats helps in some way. good luck
As an ex-ulcer sufferer, Here are my tips on getting rid of them:
As with any health-related issue, you need to keep your immune system top notch, so eating lot of fruit and veg, drink lots of water, and doing plenty of exercise.
Avoid or limit fatty, salty fast food, ready made meals. You don't know what is in them, and there could be a chemical that sets them off in it.
Avoid eating sharp edged foods that causes cuts in the mouth, such as crisps. Eat and chew your food slowly to avoid making cuts in your mouth.
Don't drink so much, avoid smoking.
Clean your teeth well with an electric toothbrush and use mouthwash, this should limit the amount of bacteria in the mouth that could set ulcers off.
Keep a diary of what you eat, and when you get ulcers. You might discover a link. For me, i think its crisps and coffee that sets it off.
This all might sound excessive, but personally i really hated ulcers, and tried everything to limit them. In the end it paid off. It also benefits your health in other ways.
MrsRochester 05-01-2012, 08:45 Hello all. First post, so please bear with me.
I've been suffering from MOUTH ULCERS for at least 2-3 years now. Sore! Large and often clustered towards the back of my throat. I was so used to the constant pain, that I didn't notice when I did, and when I did not have an ulcer.
I kept a mouth ulcer diary & photo diary, just so that I had something concrete to go to the quacks with - I felt like it was an unjustified trip to the quacks, saying that I had a SORE THROAT and troublesome MOUTH ULCERS.
I've had swabs, blood tests, avoided acidic foods, tablets to see if the problem was coming from my gut up to my throat. Nothing. They put it down to possible stress?
I've tried every mouth wash known to man, rinsing with warm salt water regularly, bongela, other creams... nothing. In the end, to relieve severe pain, I used to numb my entire throat and mouth for temporary relief by sucking on MEROCAINE lozenges - but they are very strong on your system, and no more than 8 lozenges can be consumed in any 24 hour period. Strong stuff! But like I said, only in the severest cases.
...I did get there though, and have been happily MOUTH ULCER FREE for the last 5 weeks. This may not seem like a long time, but to me, it's nowt short of a miracle! 5 weeks on the trot! Going by my diary for last year, I'd be better telling you the days I didn't have an ulcer, rather than the days I was cursed with them.
Let me just also throw in that I am physically fit, cycle most days - and my diet is very varied.
Now for the REMEDY...
My sister has an auto-immune disease and has been feeling rougher than usual with it for the last 6 months. She has various regular testing and nothing showed to be abnormal. Then she persuaded to Doc that something must be up, she was feeling run-down, aching joints etc... nothing to do with MOUTH ULCERS you might say... but I'm almost there...
The hospital diagnosed her as being VITAMIN D deficient. She was super low. The level should be around the 50 mark, crisis point is the 25 mark - she measured in at 27. The Doctor at the hospital remarked on how it is getting worryingly common place that people are VITAMIN D DEFICIENT without even realizing... and this in turn can have a direct effect and straining on the general immune system, making one more susceptible to colds etc.
VITAMIN D is created by the body after absorbing direct sunlight on to exposed skin. Or by oily fish. Sometimes added to milks, fortified cereals, but in low doses. So it can be missed if you don't meet a certain, but safe, regular exposure to the sun.
I am always wrapped up, even in the summer, as I have very pale skin and burn easily. Even when cycling, I always wear long sleeves, gloves, neck scarf - the only part of me exposed is my face (which always has moisturizer with high SPF slapped on it!).
I was Vitamin D deficient too. Crazy stuff!
My sister was prescribed her Vitamin D with Calcium tabs, as she as an ongoing illness - I was advised by my Pharmacist to take the highest dose, and so he hand picked me a super strength, sold over the counter, just 1 tablet a day VITAMIN D TABLET (the dose/unit equates to 1,000iu).
Hope my story helps... best of health to you all!
Apologies for the essay!
If in doubt, speak to your GPs - and request a VITAMIN D blood test.
