View Full Version : Holiday advice required - anyone been to Turkey?
fierysatsuma 04-01-2005, 10:09 Hi, been all over the me, now struggling for ideas on where to take my family on holiday.
Would love to hear from people who have been to Turkey - I hear mixed reviews about holidaying in Turkey. I've been considering Olu-Denis.
Also what is weather really like in May and October?
Look forward to hearing from you.
Anyone been to Lykia World in Olu Denis
How does Turkey compare to Greece, Cyprus, Spain - do you favour Turkey?
Many thanks
Matt
Elphi 24 04-01-2005, 11:42 I went to turkey for the first time last year and had the most wonderful time (stopped in Paloma Club Sultan). I think Turkey is more "international" than a lot of other european countries but for me it made it a better experience - there was more international food, drink and entertainment. I went in August and the weather was just perfect. The people were very friendly when I had a major problem with my travellers cheques one of the staff members drove me to a bank and interpreted for me which he really didnt have to do as he had just "clocked off" his duty rosta!
I'd give it a go - the duty free shops are fab! £10 for a litre bottle of Bombay Saphire Gin!
steevie/d 04-01-2005, 12:01 we went to marmaris in may last summer the weather was hot and sunny got a big market in marmaris town centre get all your snide lables jeans £10 for 3 nike shirts good quality too the only probs i had was with my 17 year old daughter they would not leave her alone got offered 5 cammels for her at market !! we stayed at club julian complex just outside town centre riding on the dolmus busses to town is a whole new experiance you think our transportis bad wait while you go on 1 of those lol but on the whole we enjoyed it the kid who bothered my daughter went for a un-planned swim on the last day of our hols lol!! very cheap to eat out too t bone steak £20 for two with drinks included kids meals for free just shop around and dont be afaid to barter with them for anything if you think its too much just walk away and on to the next 1 they usually call you back anyway best of luck steve
matsalleh 04-01-2005, 14:22 Don't go to Alanya unless you speak German. the hotel we stayed in was fine but all the menus in the resort were mainly in German. We were the only Brits in the hotel,2nd week a French couple came.
Went to Istanbul in the middle of October last year and it was still warm. As you're considering somewhere further south, the weather shouldn't be any problem.
Found the Turks to be very friendly people.
(Still prefer Greece though)
blue11265 04-01-2005, 15:02 Ichmeler is a top resort. Ten minute bus ride (hold on tight) from the bustling Marmaris but a little quiter and more scenic. Very clean resort and the locals will do all they can to make your holiday a special time.
Booked for two weeks last August with www.Perfectholidaychoice.com and paid under £1200 for a family of four.
Turkey is still very cheap for drinks and eating out so take advantage before they join the EEC and it all goes through the roof.:)
dwhembro 04-01-2005, 15:03 I've had a couple of great holidays in tukey over the past few years. Last year when I was there I remember saying that I didnt think needed ever to go anywhere other than Turkey for everything I wanted in a holiday! I guess like any what you get some what depends on the luck of the draw. Matching the resort for your requirements is also important. If you want clubbing dont go to a family resort and vice versa!
Personally, I loved the place!

ive been once and that was enough for me..beautiful country but i found the people to clingy and smarmie..for ever touching the kids and being too nice for my liking.....also not the most hygenic people ive come across, iwent into a kitchen by mistake in a restaurant (i was looking for the closet) to be honest ive never seen nowt like it..proper filthy.
MuteWitness 04-01-2005, 15:16 i went once and it was the worst holiday ever couldnt walk anywhere without people trying to get you into there restaurants or sell you things
367squadron 04-01-2005, 17:21 We wnt to Turkey last year. The country is nice and the weather was very hot-just a bit too hot to sunbath in. We went around july time and stayed in Hisonoru near Olu Deniz which was very nice. The beach at Olu deniz wasn't very nice so a trip to the laggoon was a lot better as the water is so calm and shallow.
The only thing that would put me off going to Turkey again was the long journey. It takes all day literally. You have to drive to Manc or Birmingham Airport the a 4 1/2 hour flight to Turkey then from there its another 1 1/2 hour drive to the resort so it is very tiring and it does affect you holiday!
Hope this has helped but also i hope it hasn't put u off, Turkey is still a nice country with very friendly people.
deanprez 04-01-2005, 19:31 Yes i've been to T*****.......unfortunately 2 of my fellow football fan's also went,to sample the 'magic' of 'european football' in Is****** and never returned home to their families !
Stabbed to death, all in the name of supporting their team.
Personally i cannot understand anyone wanting to go to a place where 'knife culture' is just an everyday part of life.
I for one will NEVER return to that place ....and know many other people who won't go as well !
Lanzarote is beautiful, give it a try !
Herbaliser 04-01-2005, 19:58 I went to Side (small town an hour from Antalya) a couple of years ago. I'd definitely go back to Turkey. The restaurant people leave you alone once you've got a bit of a tan. The beach wasn't particularly nice (big though) but we stayed in a family-run chalet/ hotel complex. The least friendly people we met there were the bar staff of the stupidly over-priced English owned places.
Saw no signs of trouble, but because of what happened to the two Leeds fans, I certainly didn't feel I could wander round at ease in a footy shirt
royjames 04-01-2005, 20:20 Been to Turkye 5 times and all the resorts, for me turunc near ichmiler was lovely a nice quiet resort with a lovely beech and you dont get hassled there.
Side is great if you like to explore the apollo temple and the coloseum which is well worth a visit.
Marmaris is rubbish too comercial and a lousy brown beech and all the hasstle you get there is awfull, unless you want to shop give that one a miss.
we went to olu deniz last year what a fantastic place, we stayed all inc. at sun city hotel, my mate who has2/3 holidays a year has only ever been twice to one place,, olu deniz, it is not as cheap as bodrum, icmeler and the likes but definatly worth going you will not be dissapointed have a look on holidays uncovered website for olu deniz and see what reviews say on there, the people are friendly not clingy, they love kids, the sense of humour is just like being at home (very funny) if you dont want to be hassled by shopkeepers then just make friends with one of the hotel staff get them to walk along the street with you and hey presto no hassle in short get yourself off and book you will love it

well said pal
I've been using a brilliant site to research a holiday.
http://www.holidaytruths.co.uk
Lists all holiday destinations and honest opinions on the resorts and hotels by holidaymakers who have been there. Very useful.
I've been to
* Bodrum ( around 15 years ago ) lovely town with harbour and castle, no beach - you have/had to go to Gumbet. Good shops and restaurants.
* Side - big place spread out over a wide area. Got pestered quite a bit there due to lack of tourists. Just say 'no thanks' and don't keep eye contact and walk away. Good base for exploring and great beaches.
* Marmaris - Commercialised , big, busy, nice harbour and castle, poor beach, good for sightseeing.
Turkey is a great place to visit if you like history and sightseeing. There are some great and cheap boat trips ( don't book through rep ) The Turks can be a pest though if you let them. You get pestered to go into restaurants and bars as you walk by, you get used to it and a polite no and walk briskly on usually works. Great for buying gold ( 14 carat ) and cheap copies of Nike etc. Food is pretty standard fare and dirt cheap ( or was ) If you are a lone female then beware! Or if you are a couple of young ladies ( or old come to that ) they are right creepy Casanovas!
We may visit this year after a few years off visiting Greece.
I love Turkey. I went 2 years ago to Hisaronu and loved every minute. We're going back in June this year. The people are so friendly and aren't just after your money. Its cheaper than Greece and Spain and a much more beaufiful country. The blue lagoon is perfect.
Hurry up June!
sheffexpat 26-01-2005, 16:26 I lived in Turkey for 6 or 7 years , on and off so maybe I could mention somewhere a bit more off-beat .
The Black Sea coast , eastwards of Samsun to the border with Georgia is beautiful and comparitively unspoilt. There are holiday -makers but they are mainly Turks. The people are even more friendly and helpful than the average Turk and it's a lot , lot cheaper than the Bodrum area.
Trabzon is quite a big city and is at one end of the old Silk Route into China.
It's not that difficult to go independently , alone or in a small group.
If you're in Istanbul . for example , just go to the main bus station and there are dozens of coach companies which go to the Black Sea Coast. Don't try it by train if time is important and the train only goes to just past Samsun.Samsun takes about 11 hours by coach but they do stop every 3 hours or so for toilets ...meals....etc...
Samsun to Trabzon is about 7 hours but there are a lot of beautiful places in between. From Trabzon to the Georgian border is about 1 or 2 hours. If you're feeling really reckless , get a visa in Trabzon and visit Georgia.
People are friendly everywhere and in the bigger hotels they can usually speak English but , in general , don't expect it to be like Bournemouth or even Bodrum !
I would guess that a single coach journey to Samsun from Istanbul is about £15--£20 nowadays. There's a network all over Turkey---really you can get anywhere. You could even do a circular tour and see even more of the country. Great place.! I'm determined to retire there !
Been to Turkery a few times and loved it. My favourite resorts are Gumbert and Marmaris - the only one I wold never go back to is Alanya which is very much German orientated, the Turkish people are much less friendly, and it is more expensive.
craigybabe 02-02-2005, 20:43 I really like Turkey, but more the tourist areas around ischmeler. The families are lovely and treat you well. I am still in contact with a wonderful Turkish couple I met there nine years ago.
dwhembro 16-04-2005, 15:57 Did you go to Turkey in the end?
maramris for me all time i go.
i think it got a great night life there.we stop in a hotel that was jusr 3min away from beach called long beach
i find the people very friendly, even the 1st time i was over and on the 3 night we use to shop in this shop, and even let me take clothes back with me and they dint want the money till i left the day befor i was due home.
loved it that much family got a holiday home there
we visit icmeler the next resort that ok very quiet but must admit they beach lot better then marmaris
bodrum sopose to be like marmaris but yet to visit,
A good few years back now, Turgetries, and Calis (sp) Beach.
It was ok, but I wouldnt go again. I prefer the Highlands of Scotland. Altogether nicer scenery, nicer people and cleaner too! And I can take all my dogs.
I Have Been To Olu Deniz Twice So Far. I Am Returning Again This September. I Think It Is Great. Lovely People, Do Anything To Help You. First Time I Went Was With My Two Sisters - We All Felt Very Safe. Lovely Resterants. Not Over Lively But Relaxed And Entertaining. I Have Stayed At The Asena Beach Hotel, Very Nice Clean And Friendly. Would Recomend It To Anyone The Lykia World Is All Inclusive So Prob More Upmarket.
Weather In Late Sept Was Mid To High 20's Just Sometimes A Bit Chilly In Evening, A Shirt Is Plenty Though Or Light Wieght Jumber More Than Enough.
Give It A Go, It's A Must
