View Full Version : Langsett Reservoir 2nd September

A walk will take place round Langsett Reservoir next Sunday, 2nd September.
This is a lovely walk, with very little hills to climb, and is around 4.5 miles long. As well as going all the way round the reservoir the walk passes some derelict farm buildings called North America, named so because they were shelled by American troops practicing on the empty buildings on manouvres during WW2.
The start and finishing point of the walk are close to a pub and a cafe where refreshments can be bought if necessary.
As there aren't any buses out to Langsett from Sheffield, the plan is to meet up at the public car park behind the Iceland food store (also opposite a Jet garage) on Bradfield Road at Hillsborough at 10.30, and then to go to Langsett from there in cars. Obviously, it would be helpful if anyone coming on the walk would post first to say whether they would be coming in a car, or if they would require a lift. I'm sure that with a little co=operation all round there will be enough car spaces for everyone.
One final point regarding the walk itself. If enough people want to walk further than the planned route, it could be possible to repeat the walk after the lunch break in the other direction!

My brummie friends are coming up next weekend to go to the Chatworth fair, although haven't sorted whether they're coming Sat or Sun. Looks like a good walk though so will try to convince them Sat is a much better option ;)

Hi, Sorry not to see you all in Eyam today-I appeared to have volunteered to cook Sunday lunch for everyone-how did that happen???:huh
Anyway, I fully intend coming to Langsett next week. I'll be driving, so can give anyone from this end of town a lift (S11 & all points between). Scoobz, could you p.m me your mobile number, so that I can find out where you'll all be on the folk train on Weds, as I'll probably be joining at Dore?
p.s. Lunch is still going on!!

Cooking Sunday lunch and not invited the whole group, shame on you! Don't feel too guilty though, there#ll be another time :D
Cheers for the lift offer, we'll probably discuss it on the Folk Train thing tonight.
I forgot to mention that I'll have room for 3 people in my car, and also that the meeting point is easy to get to from bus stops on Penistone Road and Hillsborough corner, and is also close to a tram stop.

Sorry I didnt make it clear that it is a round walk, and goes round the entire dam.
Dogs are allowed, and if I remember correctly, off the lead in certain parts.
If you do decide to come and need a lift please let us know. Alternatively, either turn up at the car park at Hillsborough, or got staraight to the car park for Langsett Barn, I expect that we'll be there for @ 11.00

Hello

Me and Ozzy dog will be joining you for this one. I will do the walk this time and not just meet for breakfast like last time. :hihi:

I could drive but will probably get a lift with my mum, so Linchpinlulu will have one space less. :D

I was going to come on the folk train tonight but I'm a bit hung over so need to spend the evening horizontal to make up for spending all day vertical at work. :gag:

Hi MadSam!

Welcome to the Group, hope you make it Sunday you'll be made very welcome if you do.
I've just been trying to get the postcode of the Iceland store I mentioned in my original post and there doesn't seem to be one on Bradfield Road, so it must be another frozen food shop I've seen there. Sorry!
There is however a Wilkinsons almost opposite and their postcode is S6 2BY. Your route to here should bring you past the public car park that I mentioned, which is on the left immediately before the Wilkinson store on the right.
The meeting time there is 10.30 and we normally wait 10 minutes for latecomers so I imagine we'll leave Bradfield Road at about 10.40. it will take about 10-15 mins to get to Langsett, so if you prefer you could always meet up with us at the public car park at Langsett. Can't get a postcode for this, but the Wagon and Horses situated about 200 yards away is S36 4GY.
If you want any further information, i.e. a mobile number let me know.
Hope this is clear

If it makes it easier, me and Linchpin could pick you up. We will be going along Eccy Road. I think  Don't even know where I'm going really, just relying on Linchpin :hihi:

I'm definitely on for Sunday. And thanks to Rainbow Sky, I won't be standing on Dore Station tonight waiting for the Folk Train. She p.m.ed me to point out that in my post about the outing, I'd put Weds, not Tues!! Scoobz, you either didn't notice when you answered me or, it was a cunning plan to keep me away! I'm very pleased you all had such a good time without me. ::roll:
Can I just confirm; Sunday. Eleven a.m. Langsett. This Sunday. ??

Oh no! We DID miss you. The 2nd thing Scoobz said to me, when I got on at Dore, was "Have you seen Linchpinlulu on platform".
I think the 1st thing he said to me was something like "Uh, what are you doing here"
No, seriously - sorry you missed a fun night.
The Folk Train is always the FOURTH (not last) Tuesday of the month.

I have enough problems getting myself to the right place at the right time on the right day without worrying about you my dear! Well reknowned for getting arrangements wrong I even went for a job interview a day early last week! Think the confusion is my fault so I'll try and put that right. If youre getting to Hillsborough by bus or tram you need to find Farm Foods, which is opposite Wilkinsons, and then go to the car park which is to the side and round the back of Farm Foods. You can't miss it. Alternatively, possibly someone passing near the Greystones part of Eccy Road will give you a lift???

Just for information to anyone who would like to walk in this area and use public transport :
From Sheffield use service 57 as on Sundays and Bank Holidays the Stocksbridge service is extended to Holmfirth and goes through Langsett village.
Otherwise the options on Mon to Saturday are:
a) 57 to Stocksbridge or tram/supertram link bus to Stocksbridge Co op then change to 23 Barnsley via Penistone.
b) 29 to Penistone or Train then bus 24 to Stocksbridge via Penistone
c) train to Barnsley then either 23 or 24

Note that a Sheffield Travelmaster is valid to Langsett via Stocksbridge.

or if you like to walk a quiet back lane and field paths go from the 57 Stocksbridge Unsilven Bridge

What a great turnout today - despite the rain I think this has been the biggest turnout since Chatsworth. Great to finally meet Linchpinlulu and Jess22 and also MadSam who's automatically in my good books for wearing his Canadian shirt!

Didn't take many photos, but here's a couple that show us looking our best :P after walking in the rain for a couple of hours :hihi:

Yet another thanks to you all for nice walk, good company & usual fun time (ooh & home made cake - yummy).

OK, so we got wet but well worth the soaking!
Shame that the pub (was it called Wagon & Horses?) was anything but welcoming but we know where not to go in future eh.

Nice to meet you MadSam!
Good to exchange "horse talk" with you, Jess.

Hope you all have a good time on Thursday Pub Walk.

Really enjoyed today. Big Ozzy is fast asleep now, I think it tired him out. Weather was a bit pants, but didn't spoil it at all. I have never been around there, it was nice to see somewhere new.
Good to meet a few new faces as well, :) see you all soon

Nice walk despite the weather. What happened to the forecast for rain later I wonder?
Great to see as many as 16 people turn up, which is the most I've ever seen, and a very cosmopolitan crowd too with people having origins from all lots of exotic places such as Canada, Italy, Scotland, Birmingham, Warwickshire, Hemel Hempstead and even Wadsley Bridge!
Nice crowd once again, with all 16 of us piling in to the Waggon and Horses at Langsett at lunchtime and receiving absolutely appalling service. If ever a pub didn't want casual/non-eating punters then this is the one. We should have known better beforehand though, cos it was the same the last time we went there. Hopefully the diners with their `reserved` tables fared better than we did, and were perhaps even allowed to enjoy the puddings offered on the menu as opposed to some of our walkers who were refused them because the pub was too busy :o
The 2nd part of the walk which 7 brave and foolhardy souls endured, I mean enjoyed, took us round Upper Midhope reservoir and was extremely wet and slippery, but ideal for the frogs who joined us from time to time!
Nice to meet MadSam (not mad at all) and great to have a kickabout with young Callum at the pub, and show him how great at football we Sassenachs are!

Nice to see everyone - old and new faces - on this walk; a really good turnout and an enjoyable walk despite the damp weather and the unwelcoming pub. I was really tired out after this walk - must have been the result of all the mountain walking earlier in the week:)

Another great walk yesterday and nice to meet some new (to me) faces and welcome to Madsam :). Everyone very friendly and chatty. Weather didn't matter in such fine company and countryside. I don't imagine many of us will be returning to the aforementioned pub, but no doubt there are one or two more which we can patronise! Thanks for the p.m. Galloway.
Hope to see you all at some point on Thurs. Will help Jess 22 sort out next week's walk-a bit closer to home for some of us-hope it lives up to high standard.
