As anyone noticed the amount of roadworks around Sheffield? Everywhere I drive I seem to be getting held up by temporary lights because the road is up. I wouldn't mind but there never seems to be anybody working on the road and these works tend to drag on for months. Most of the time it appears to be Yorkshire Water whom are carrying out the work. Now I understand that pipes have to be upgraded but what I fail to understand is why there is a need to have lots of different roads up all at once? why not concentrate on gettting one section finished first?
A great example of this is the road linking Handsworth to the Parkway at Orgreave at Big W.
They built this new bypass while the old Orgreave Road was open, then closed the old road for opencasting.
Now, a few years later, they decide to build a business park there and have had to dig up the road, add a roundabout a generally rebuild it from scratch. A bit of forward thinking and putting in a few roundabouts BEFORE opening the road would have been more logical.
I know the works are almost complete but when they weren't the traffic queued back to the parkway and beyond.
As a pedestrian I find it difficult to walk in a straight line when I venture out to do the shopping and whatever else the day brings.
The cable tv guys have ripped up most of the paving near where I live and it all looks like a patchwork nightmare. Not only that but for some reason the pavements seem to be sinking on the road sides so my shoes are wearing out something awful and I'm practically walking on my ankles now!!!!!!!!!!!!
A lane was blocked off on a stretch of Penistone road tonight. It caused long traffic queues.

Im not sure that the works are complete yet, further disruption to follow, signs have appeared to inform about sewer works to be carried out in late Jan..... why they heck didnt they lay the sewer when they constructed the road....
Major works are due to start on Woodseats next week. That should guarentee several mile long traffic jams all day!
Must rememeber to get 293 bus rather than the 25, and avoid 'Seats!
The reason why we always seem to get lots of roadworks at this time of year is very simple - the financial year end is approaching and if they don't spend their money before then, they don't get it again next year.
So they decide to do lots of maintenance work so that the powers that be can be told 'look, we needed to spend it for X purpose'. That way, the bosses can't turn round and say 'well you didn't need the money last year so you're not getting it this year'.
