HSBC have had a major problem with their computers - see report on BBC site here :

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/4143611.stm

May explain problems I'm having with logging on. I receive the following helpful error message after trying to Log In :P

========

We are unable to deal with your request. Select 'Exit' and then select 'Log on' to continue. (886)

-----------

Tried calling the number they gave in the BBC report but the automated message says to call tomorrow morning due to a system failure

Everything should be ok now, was finally resolved at around midnight.

I was working at HSBC's datacentre yesterday and believe me it was manic. As yet the cause is unknown.

I know, it was just a little joke. I was just pondering that the poor guy who cocked up at the DOE had been sacked and joined the HSBC and pulled the same stunt there :)

I would guess that the bloke who screwed up the computers at the DOE would have been promoted to remove him from his current position, probably in charge of all their IT now knowing the civil service!!!

Well its possible, we have got some divs here.

This was a hardware failure. The big question at the moment is why the contingency systems didnt kick in.

I work at the Church Army training College on Cavendish Street (near West One) When I got inot work yesterday our telephones were out and had been since New Year's Eve apparently there was some major line fault in the city centre and they have had to replace the entire lines could this have affected it? Seems a logical connection to make!

What does everyone else think?

Wendy - it was a hardware failure within the HSBC environment, nothing to do with what you experienced as it was nationwide not just Sheffield.

But you're right, some of the remote atms links run alongside "normal" telecoms circuits so this does happen from time to time but not on as big a scale (remember the Manchester fire?)

I know the diggers at the site of the new flats next to west barr police station cut through **** loads of cables not that long ago- it could be something to do with that?

It was just a thought - I misread the post about the dept of Employment system. That will teach me to read it properly - I misread it as having gone down at the same time!

Sorry I may have misunderstood here but is this the same as the problems with 'solo' cards at the beginning of this year? I wasn't able to draw out any money or make any transactions at all.

Anyone else have the same problem?

Ahh yes. Contingency systems.

Ops'/trouble shooters' faces are always a picture when someone says the dreaded line... "I think we ought to switch to contingency .....".

I work literally a minutes walk from you, and our phones were not affected at all. Odd.

Ever since they fixed the internet banking problem, I'm now getting the usual security details screen when I log in [asking for date of birth and 3 numbers from security number] but also an extra screen that is blank and says "about:blank" on the top. Is it just happening to me or others too ?
