Rivelin6 24-08-2007, 16:42 Hi tia1803,
Yes I went to Westways but a bit before your time I was there end of 60's to around 75/76 can't remember exactly!( getting too old)
Did you live near school, I was on Mona Road first then Conduit Road.
spooky as i lived on mona road too!!!!
Rivelin6 24-08-2007, 16:50 Where abouts?
I was on the bottom at the left hand side if you were facing up the hill No 29 if I remember rightly. I was only there till I was about 4 so you'll not remember-not been born at the time! Do you remember the Baines and the Thompsons? Fred Thompson was a Window Cleaner and lived on there for many years.
i was at 41 mona road!!!
i remember the thompsons!
wow how spooky!
Rivelin6 24-08-2007, 16:56 Small world:D Do you keep in touch with anyone from school?
lynne used to live on springvale road, the derbyshires lived next door and i kept in touch for a while with them

Can't see any reference to when Western Road became Westways School? Still not forgotten Mrs Minshen (?) and Kevan Ellison who gave so much to the school but tragically died so early.
i am trying to remember some teachers now!!!
my mind is blank!
Rivelin6 24-08-2007, 17:24 I remember Mr Hughes but that's all
CHAIRBOY 24-08-2007, 17:25 From a parent's perspective, Mrs Mitchell was one of my favourites.
You can't beat solid foundations!

I left Westways about 10 years ago (so a lot later than most of you!) and was in Mrs Minchin's class when she died :( She was a wonderful lady, very sorely missed (as is Kevan Ellison).
Rivelin6 27-08-2007, 15:59 I can remember Mrs Minshen dying. My mother was a governor at the school at the time when it happened and then my mother was diagnosed with cancer and died almost straight afterwards.
CHAIRBOY 27-08-2007, 16:32 I remember fondly the school's production of "Guys and Dolls" that would have been done about ten years ago. I thought many people worked very hard to deliver such an enjoyable production and we often look back at the video recording.
I left around 1985 and Mr. Ellison was my last teacher there.
I'm actually really saddened to hear he died. How did it happen?
I remember Mr Davenport, Mrs. Brown, Mr. Coldwell, Mrs. Mitchell, Mrs. Beaumont before she left, Mrs. Crookes, Mr. Holden before he left, Mr. Hanson.
Are any of these still around?

Mr Ellison died from a very aggressive brain tumour. A very moving funeral service was held at St.Thomas's Church and there were many pupils there, many of whom had moved to secondary schools who came to say their fond farewells to a popular and much respected teacher.
mr davenport was the best! mrs brown was nice,mr coldwell was ace.
i remember mr holden giving me the slipper for burping in his class!!!
Tragic. I called to see him about 10 years ago at the school...he looked exactly the same!
He was very interested and happy to see me 12 years or so after I left. He remembered me and even said he and the staff were talking about a play I was in whilst I was there....Ricky's Christmas Dream Journey...
I also saw Mr. Coldwell there...minus the tash and with grey hair. You did as you were told with Mr. Coldwell (or was is Caldwell?)
Mr. Davenport used to scare the hell out of me. Remember the threat of his 'size 9's' ?
We were in Mr. Holdens last class before he left. He had to resort to whacking us with his hand in front of the class back then!
Anyone remember Miss. Beaumont? She was a right laugh and my first crush I think.....Or was that Mrs. Davies from the primary?...
mrs davies was really small wasnt she?i was in her class i think
and wasnt miss beaumont a french teacher tht all the lads had a crush on?
did you live near the school?
i was on mona road
Miss Beaumont had blonde hair. I think I remember the french teacher...didn't she change her name because she married? I think I recall her having black/dark hair and wearing a lot of make up...could be wrong though.
Nearest I ever lived to Westways was Northfield Rd up until being six. I was carted off to netherthorpe after that but remained at Westways.
Mona Rd. Didn't Mrs. Ogle (right name?) live on there?
Aaaarrgghh just remembered Mrs. Hughs!!!
And was there a Mrs. Salvolski in nursery?
Damned good times. From your previous post I'd have been two years under you (34)
I used to live on Mona Road (my Mum and Dad still live in the same house) and went to Westways - it was the best school ever. Probably the nearest you'll ever get to a 'community' school - every teacher seemed to know the name of every pupil and nurtured the skills - whether academic or otherwise - of everyone. Surprised no-one has mentioned Mrs Marshall - small, red-haired and as firey as you would expect but God! she was inspiring with her enthusiasm of the school choir and music lessons. Some of the stuff we sang at school concerts often brought the audience to tears. (From memory it was because of the quality but maybe, on the removal of rose tinted spectacles that was not the case??) Many of the pupils at Westways also experienced the youth organisations at St Timothy's church - brownies and guides, cubs and scouts. The scout and guide marching band... Oh Happy Days...
Krammers 06-09-2007, 21:37 Miss Beaumont had blonde hair. I think I remember the french teacher...didn't she change her name because she married? I think I recall her having black/dark hair and wearing a lot of make up...could be wrong though.

When I was there I remember a French teacher called Mrs Varadi but that was probably about 1976.
I wish they'd taught IT skills when I was there (until around 1976) then I'd be able to work out how to use this site properly!
Mrs Ogle lived at the top of Mona Avenue (rather than Road).
When we were of the age that our classrooms were in the annexe, we also had goldfish which were called Tish and Tosh. There was a song but I can only remember the first line: Tish and Tosh, Tish and Tosh, the Westways Fish... (this was before getting to Middle School and learning from Mrs Marshall..)
There was a teacher in the infants who brought her dog into class every day - it might have been Mrs Hughes.
Mona Road was a clear split of two parts: - 'little Mona' - the dead-end that backed on to the school playground to Springvale Road' and Mona Road was the uphill bit.
When we were young on Mona Road there were loads of families with children of a similar age - all playing out in the street together. Games like rounders (never easy on a hill) using the lamposts as bases and 'gang' which was a glorified version of 'tig'. If Mr and Mrs Steers hadn't had a garage, set back from the road, we would never have been able to play as they always drew the short straw with us kids using the driveway into the garage as our base/den/hiding place.
mrs marshall, wow i remember her too!!!!
glad i posted this thred as it brings back my childhood and yes westways was the best school and i had a lot of happy times in that school and also at st.timothys!
i bet we all know each other too!!!
Rivelin6 07-09-2007, 08:58 We probably do, if only by sight! Sounds like tripleu and Krammers were there at the same time as me.

Rivelin6 17-09-2007, 08:31 Julie Brown who became Julie Betts was my best friend at Mona Road. Her sister Wendy is on Friends Reunited.
wow!
where did you see tracy wheeler?
the corner shop was fab for all the 1p sweets and i loved peggys for the bubbly machine where you used to get the tiny books of tatoos!!!
The corner shop on mona and springvale road? I used to love those really strong salt n vinegar crisps they used to sell, yes I lived at 312 springvale road until I was 8, moved to ecclesall, went to greystones and then back to king teds.
Dare you to tell us your name!
Ask your sister I work with her! :)
blue11265 17-09-2007, 20:47 I left Westways in 1977, i remember Mr and Mrs Hughes, Mrs H taught me in the last year of the annex, when i went into the junior school Mr Hughes gave me the nick name "Eddie".This went on for the four years that i was there, and just prior to leaving for King Teds he called me in to his class and asked if I ever wondered why ? he then told me that it was after a footballer that played for his beloved Liverpool, what i couldn't understand was that i was crap at footy and a Wednesdayite ? :( Some of my mates still call me Eddie 30 years later.
Happy days
My brother Craig Wright knocked about with Peter Price and they are still good mates.
Anyone remember the Bensons from Springvale Rd ?
Some names ringing a bell here, Peter Price and Craig Wright and the Tompsons, I lived opposite Craig and Lynne Vickers, Nicholas Lumb just round the corner. Bensons doesn't ring a bell how about Sandell? Nigel and 2 olders sisters Sue and Wendy.
you mean richard benson that went out with joanne wright!
you work with my sister????
ok...now i am baffled as to who you are!
sassynack......where did you see tracy?
Rivelin6 18-09-2007, 08:20 The Bensons and Sandells ring a bell with me too. I went to King Ted's in 1976 so just a bit older than you.
Wow some real distant memories here....
I vaguely remember the Bensons...two brothers was it?
Clampy too. Stephen Henstock...his older bro is my bro in law...
We always used to go to 'Coplies' across from the bolehills after school.
Mrs. Wheeler was great. Mrs. Hughs used to frighten the life out of me. I always remember her being overly strict for some reason.
Quite a few from my year emigrated too whilst at Westways. Joanne Richardson, Melanie Hoare, Sarah Gillott to name a few.
I remember most of the dinner ladies too, although all the names escape me. I saw one in the Sportsman, Walkley a few months ago and she remembered me!
i cant remember any names from the dinner ladies...but i will rack my brains
Maybe she was before your time, but do any of you remember the formidable Miss Green, headmistress of the infants. One look from her sent shivers down your spine.
My grandmother was a dinnerlady....but that was in the 1950's.
Rivelin6 23-09-2007, 05:58 I remember Miss Green. I kicked her on my first day at school because she told me that my mum would pick me up at lunchtime to which I replied no she wont my dad will! Well that's how the family legend goes anyway. That was the start of a very interesting school career.:hihi:
Mrs. Turton (I think) was headmistress in lower school whilst I was there, Mr. Hanson in upper.
I also remember Mrs. Boyd.
Having a fight with a kid called Phillip Allen, chipping my tooth messing about with Paul Wren and being mates with 'chipmunk' Richard Selby. Oh and a kid we used to call 'Stig'...Nicholas somethingorother. Teachers calling me 'wingnut', and Mr. Coldwell placing a kid called Anjam on the desk while everyone laughed at his shorts!
Remember when it snowed and all the kids used to slide down a huge black ice patch in the lower playground just below the annexe?
Shining times.
mrs turton was really small if i remember rightly
i used to love sledging down mona avenue!
Great thread. Any other memories anyone?
CHAIRBOY 01-12-2007, 08:16 i cant remember any names from the dinner ladies...but i will rack my brains
Let me ease that headache via my daughter's time there.
Messrs Fox, Greatorex and Simpson were/are lunchtime assistants at Westways.

Did /does Auriol live just up the road from Walkley Library? I used to live on Parsonage Cres till about 2004. Tell Cheryl my name was Lois Riley at school. I have talked to her once on friend's reunited.

was one of the sisters called julie????she will be 38 now...if so she was one of my friends at school!
wobblywill 17-07-2009, 08:02 AAhhh memories! I used to go to Western Road School(Westways) from about 62-69/70. I can remember a teacher who used to bring her cat to school and leave it in a cupboard. Once she asked me to go to shop on corner of Springvale/Western Road to get some kit-e-kat(we didn't know about the cat at this point). I thought she meant/said kit-kat so brought a kit-kat back! She then showed us the cat and I went back to shop to get some kit-e-kat! Wow such memories.
Reading some of the posts about getting slipper/smacked....can you imagine that now! My schooldays were happy days although we(as a family) got picked on/bullied mercilessly but I wouldn't change my schooldays for anything. Then went to King Teds in 1970 before leaving school in 1974
gloriagrace 17-07-2009, 08:11 was one of the sisters called julie????she will be 38 now...if so she was one of my friends at school!
Yes!!!! Im married to her brother Matt. Julie lives in Worcester now.
al_partridge 03-08-2009, 13:27 Anyone remember Miss. Beaumont? She was a right laugh and my first crush I think.....Or was that Mrs. Davies from the primary?...
Miss Beaumont had blonde hair. I think I remember the french teacher...didn't she change her name because she married? I think I recall her having black/dark hair and wearing a lot of make up...could be wrong though.
Hands off Miss Beaumont, she's mine! I was in her first class when she joined, but I think she only stayed for about 3 years. She was gorgeous and probably early 20s (I was only 9 though), strange to think that she must be around 50 by now.
The French teacher (she taught it, she wasn't actually French) was originally Miss Glews and then she changed to Mrs Revitt. To this day I still remember that she often seemed to be smuggling peanuts down the front of her jumper, unless it was something else
I was also in Mr Holden, Mrs Brown and Mrs Marshall's classes. In the infants my first teacher was Miss Hebblethwaite, who was still there literally years later and still remembered my name, Mrs Bates and Mrs Cook I think.
I went to Westways in 1979-Mr Coldwells class (3rd year)
Followed by Mr Hughes class in the 4th year. He left at Xmas to become head at Hillsboro, Parkside Road (I think) and that is when Kevan Ellison came to the school.
I remember seeing his death in the paper, he was a good teacher, RIP.
I also remember Mrs Marshall who had a mixed class and taught yrs 3/4 and took us for music-her favourite song for us to sing was 'Amazing Grace'
Miss Farrar taught the other year 3 class and Mr Davenport the other year 4 class.
Mr Hides was head teacher whilst I was at the school.
I remember Miss Tindall trying to teach us sex education in yr 4-hilarious!!
I remember Miss Ambler used to teach craft and home economics.
I used to live on Northfield Road and remember many school friends tho have little if any contact now.
Sorry, just remembered the teacher who taught us French was Mrs Lomas.

I remember Miss Green as she had me in her office to teach how to pronounce "th" instead of using "f". She also knew how to use the cane. The other teachers I remember were Miss Savage, & Miss Ayres. I stared at Western Rd in 1934. I was one of the unfortunates who had to have teeth out at the dreaded dentists.

I went to Westways 1968 to 1974/5 We had to stay on an extra year as there was some sort of education reorganisation (we started at King Teds in year 2 (weird)). Must have been 1974 as it was my last year at the school (& then it wasn't). Anyway this was also the year that the school changed name from Western Road to Westway's, (Westway,s sounded more modern?) I was in Mr Hitchmond's class & was in ladybower house (Redmires, Strines & Derwent were the others)
So many memories.

Nice use of colour - however, it's good but it's not quite right! Strines was yellow, and Derwent was green.
I was a Redmires lad myself, which was a bit galling for a dyed in the wool Wednesdayite.

He used to "get the cherry on" in class.

Hi all, I was just reading through this thread and remembering the good old days. I cant believe that no one remembers the Ledgers on Mona road. I loved westways and the teachers. I loved playing rounders in the play ground and sports days.
It is really sad to hear about Mr Ellison, He was a good teacher.
I remember the Ledger family. Stephen was in my year at Westways and through King Edwards. They lived opposite my best friend Janette Yeomans.

Blondie_C 21-12-2010, 18:50 Hi bunglefuzz
I was a good friend of Cheryl's when I was at school. I lived on Conduit Road. Which one is your mum? One of the sisters used to live down Walkley and I see David and his Dad around in Crookes alot.

Rivelin6 21-12-2010, 19:13 Hi there Lois, I only heard about this from a friend at work who'd spotted my name on this forum. Loads to ask - are you still living in and around Crookes? Married? Kids? Usual nosey stuff! I can clearly recall life at Westways but not a second at KES - I think I'd discovered men by then :)
Hi Blondie,
Thanks for your message, I'm living in Walkley at present and I have one daughter who is 20 now and at Huddersfield University. Used to be married but divorced now and with a new partner. How about you?
come on you lot....lets have some more memories and keep this thread going! xx
I remember sports days on the Bole Hills in summer, rounders matches in the top and bottom yard and swimming at the university at the bottom of Conduit Road/Northumberland Road with Mr Lions!!

The anual sports day on the Bole Hills was a realy big deal back then.
Early eighties...Mr. Coldwell was terrifying, Mr. Holden...the last teacher to smack us!...Mr. Davenport was also frightening at the time, he used to tell us about his 'size 9' shoe...he turned out to be a great chap (after meeting him again as an adult) but sadly retired after being hounded and mocked by kids about his increasing deafness.
Mrs. Brown was a good storyteller.
Mr. Ellison was the best. R.I.P
Great, great and very vivid memories.
