Hi,
A while ago someone posted some old photos of Hunters Bar roundabout. I've tried a search but I can't find them. can anyone help?
Picturesheffield.com is down at the moment. Hoping it will be back after Christmas holiday.
Wow a coincidence!
I was about to post a request for sites with archive pictures of Nether Edge from the last 100-200 years.
I'll try picturesheffield later to see if its there.

Sorry this isnt really what you want but its only a few yards short.
Can anyone help with any other sites please?
Or failing that places to try like libraries?
cheers
d
Picturesheffield is the library resource for pics and there's thousands of them on there!

Hi,
I saved a couple of images of the roundabout and toll gate to my computer a few months ago before the Picture Sheffield site went down.
The first is a picture of the Hunter's Bar toll gate way back in 1884. It’s really hard to imagine it once looking like this.
The second was taken in 1950 from outside the tennis club on Ecclesall Road looking back towards the roundabout. It doesn't look too dissimilar from today - except for the lack of cars!
If you're interested, PM me your E-Mail and I'll send them on to you.
Cheers,
Pete

If you decide to buy any prints from PictureSheffield I can vouch for the quality....it's much better than you can print off from your pc.
I'm trying to figure out why this (http://www.picturesheffield.co.uk/cgi-bin/picturesheffield.pl?_cgifunction=form&_layout=picturesheffield&keyval=sheff.id=7873) , and this (http://www.picturesheffield.co.uk/cgi-bin/picturesheffield.pl?_cgifunction=form&_layout=picturesheffield&keyval=sheff.id=7855) didn't come up when I was looking for it, but has come up now I'm looking for something else
Edit: more (http://www.picturesheffield.co.uk/cgi-bin/picturesheffield.pl?_cgifunction=form&_layout=picturesheffield&keyval=sheff.id=7144) and more (http://www.picturesheffield.co.uk/cgi-bin/picturesheffield.pl?_cgifunction=form&_layout=picturesheffield&keyval=sheff.id=7143) and more (http://www.picturesheffield.co.uk/cgi-bin/picturesheffield.pl?_cgifunction=form&_layout=picturesheffield&keyval=sheff.id=5167)

I think 'Picture Sheffield' is still very much a work in progress, - they might have been doing some maintenance work on the database when you looked the first time.
Hunter's Bar was the last Toll Bar to close in Sheffield, When it closed at mdnight on 31 October 1884 the crowd that had gathered to celebrate took the gate off and threw it into a field !!
Probably a gang of drunken yobs from Eccy Road South :D
I thought there was a gatepost in the middle of the roundabout still, but in some of the victorian looking pics it seems to be missing. Can anybody shed any light on this?

When I was a lad the stoops were used to support the entrance gate into Endcliffe park. ISTR they were later placed in the middle of the new roundabout....are they not still there ?
