I could do with some help in connecting my wireless router. It is a BT Voyager 2100.
It was working fine yesterday, then it just stopped working?.
I can get to the router's home page by using the ip address and it says 'connect'. It tries connecting for a few seconds and then returns to the original screen.
I have checked all the details against the ones given to me by my isp but because my isp is AOL they refuse to give me any help with the router.
I can not ring BT until Tuesday and it is doing my head in, having to share one pc with the missus!.

If anyone out there reallyknows what they are talking about, your help would be most welcome ;)

Did you have your settings saved on the router after you had the config working before?

If so unplug from the mains and re-connect.

When I configure something like this I always write down every number and setting in a notebook. This helps greatly a few months/years later when something goes wrong, or if I need to do another one for someone else. Also write all the network setting down on every pc on your network.

All the settings (Apart from the MTU) are still at the default settings. I tried resetting (loads of times) and un-plugging the router.
Another strange thing......Windows keep's telling me it wants to renew my ip address?.
I tried letting it renew my ip bit it failed?

when you try to renew the ip address from your pc what error message does it give you?
check that you haven't disabled the dhcp option from the wireless router and that your network settings on your pc are set to use dhcp.

I'm going to be totally non techy here. Ours kept dropping out. We had somebody in to look at the whole thing, and he took half an hour changing all sorts of settings and putting them back and bringing two computers back online.

Then I found out by accident, if you unplug the broadcasting box from the wall and let all the LEDs die down, then plug it back in - it works! Must cause it to auto-reboot or something

Mightn't work for you, but it may be worth a try ;)

The DHCP setting on the router are on but i'm not sure how to check it on the pc's?

When windows tries to renew my ip address it just says that it was not able to?

I ran a diagnostic on the router and it passed everything except:

Test ATM OAM F4 segment ping
TEST ATM OAM F4 end to end ping
Test authentication with isp

These mean diddly squat to me!, do thay make sense to anyone else?

Yeah, i was IM'ing our resident expert for 2 hours last night but he is over the pond so was not familiar with the BT router. He also tried connecting to my router to set it up remotely but he was unable to gain access!.
Very strange?, considering i had given him my password, username and ip address!

Cyclone

you have 1 pc connecting okay?

and that's connecting through the same router, but using a cable instead of wireless.

If you try to renew the ip address on the working computer what happens?

vidster
02-01-2005, 14:09
This computer is connected using a standard broadband modem at the moment.
Over the last day, i have become pretty good at switching between the two setups ;)

Last night i tried the following from cmd:

ipconfig /renew
ipconfig /release *Con*
ipconfig /renew

Everything seemed to go through properly.

Just a thought (as the sky goes dark and the rain starts again). Could this be something to do with the lightning we had yesterday?. I have surge protection on all my sockets but the lights did flicker a couple of times yesterday?

Hi,

Its not clear from your description if its a failure between your router and isp, or your router and pc.
As mentioned earlier check your DHCP has configured ip addresses correctly. At the router you should be able to check that DHCP is enabled and that your pc is shown in its list of LAN clients.
To check your pc is configured correctly, right click the network icon near your clock, choose status option then support tab.
It should show

Address type : assigned by DHCP
IP address : 192.168.1.2 or something similar
Default gateway : 192.168.1.1 ( the ip address of your router)

If this all looks OK, probably best thing to check is your DSL configuration options, which is conceivable they were lost if your router has crashed or been powered off. My DLink router is a bit buggy is this respect.

Thanks for getting back so soon stephen

When i click on the network icon i see this:

Then when i select the repair button, it tries to repair but then says it was unable to?

what does the 'details' button say?

can you also start a dos window (start button - run - 'cmd' - return) and type 'ipconfig /all' (without quotes) and paste the results from that into a post. It should look something like this;

C:\win2000\system32>ipconfig /all

Ahh that rings bells!

Try looking at your tcp/ip configuration on your pc.

Right click the network icon...
select properties button...
scroll down the list box to internet protocol tcp/ip...
click on this item once then select properties button...

make sure the radio button for "obtain ip address automatically" is selected. ( and DNS server for that matter )

let me know how you get on.

Cyclone: I feel like a newbie but i have forgotten how to copy the text from the cmd box!. It did say something about DHCP not being on though!. Also, will the readings be different due to me having this modem in use?

Vidster in your configuration settings for your router do you have a tab that says anything about cloning the ip address because when I set mine up I had to clone the ip address (physical address) of the network card that the modem was plugged into in order to get the wireless part to work.

Cyclone
02-01-2005, 16:59
that would be cloning the mac address of the primary pc (the one that normally connects direct to the modem).
But that's for tricking AOHell into supplying a connection to a different device, it wouldn't stop the wireless router working either way.

vidster, the 2nd post, are you saying that it worked and it's connected?

it looks fine, it has an address, it knows where to go for dns... was there still a problem at that point?

vidster
02-01-2005, 17:02
No i can't see anything about cloning in the settings:( .

The first thing i see when i go to the config page is a big red connect button. Normally when i press this button i get connected and a clock/timer appears to tell me how long i have been connected.
If i press it now it says "Connecting" for a few seconds and then just jumps back to the original page with the connect button?.

wendy
02-01-2005, 17:04
Hate to contradict you here Cyclone but without the mac address (I forgot the name before - I don't know all the jargon yet!) my router wouldn't connect to the modem at all and I got a similar response when I typed in ip config. The reason being that without this entered into the configuration it blocked all access to the modem.

this page with the connect button is to get into the router config right?

wendy - that's what i meant. The wireless router will work even if there is no broadband, the mac spoofing is to connect to the broadband network.

Vidster - it looks like the wireless connection is being set up correctly.
If you can get it into that state again, try pinging (from the dos prompt) these addresses.

192.168.1.1 - this is your router, no reason for it to fail.

217.12.3.11 - this is yahoo.

www.yahoo.co.uk - this is also yahoo, but using dns

Cyclone - I know the purpose of the cloning but I can assure that if you do not put this into the configuration page it will not connect not even on the network card with the mac address.

it looks like you've connected to the router with no problems, but the router has not picked up an ip address from the modem.

somewhere in the set-up options for the router should be the option to set or clone the mac address.
this needs to be set to the same value as you original pc.
you can find it out from the ipconfig /all command again,

it looks like this

Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-0C-76-71-13-6F

and should normally be entered without the -'es.

wendy
02-01-2005, 18:11
The mac address is the physical address of the network card on the other machine (the one that works) basically the broadband modem will not allow more than one person to connect to the internet and share the bandwidth without this cloning as Cyclone said you have to fool the isp modem into thinking that both machines are the same one also as Cyclone says your router is working that why you are picking up the 192.168.1.1 when you type in ip config.

You need to get access to your configuration settings on your router to set it up. You need to go into command on the other machine and type in ip config again under one of tabs for for your router configuration you should find a section for cloning the mac address whatever the physical address of the network card on the other machine is needs putting in to this page.

Does this help?

wendy

I have copied any pages that i think may be relevent. I could not see any reference to a mac address?.

Enter information provided by your ISP to configure the WAN IP settings.
Obtain an IP address automatically (this has a radio button that is selected)
Use the following IP address:
WAN IP Address : 0.0.0.0
Enable NAT
__________________________________________________

Enter your BT Voyager IP address and subnet mask for LAN interface and then enable DHCP server on LAN interface to provide IP address settings for your computers.

Primary IP Address: 192.168.1.1
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0

Configure secondary IP address and subnet mask

MTU (default: 1500)

DHCP Server On Start IP: 192.168.1.2
End IP: 192.168.1.254
Lease Time: days1 hours0 minutes0

wendy
02-01-2005, 19:34
I've sent you a PM but this is probably the problem I don't about aol as I am on Blueyonder but I have to connect my router to the modem supplied otherwise I can't connect. Seems to me that if you have never had this working that this is your problem. I would imagine that there is some way that aol is blocking supply because of the equipment.

I am sure someone else will confirm this but as far as I know you need to connect the router to the original modem.

Cyclone
02-01-2005, 23:25
vidster on the router config screen (the one with the red connect button), does it say "ready to connect" in the text above the username and password field?

Have you tried the "troubleshooting" link on the left hand side.
select that and then "Run Diagnostic Tests". Post the results on here so we can have a look.

You can also check out the "advanced" link, then "status". It has several subsections which may have information of some interest. Particularly the first 3.

vidster

Cyclone.
On the first screen it does say "Ready to connect".
I tried the troubleshooting screen and it ran a diagnostic. The rusults said everything passed except:

Test ATM OAM F4 segment ping
TEST ATM OAM F4 end to end ping
Test authentication with isp

I have posted most of the advanced screens in earlier posts.
I also tried saving the screen shots on Imageshack and Photobucket but they come out looking rubbish.

Any information you can think of, i will be happy to type out for you.

Cyclone

i'm at a loss. It appears that everything is working except the authentication with aol. There is no mac cloning ability on this router.
a shot of the status screen would be interesting...

I always thought AOL was using PPPoE, or have they changed? I know they used to use their own version of PPPoE which wouldn't work with certain routers as it was a homebrew AOL version.

vidster
03-01-2005, 16:11
AOL will not help me with this problem but they did send me an email with all the relevent settings.
I just checked it again and it says to use PPPoA?.

03-01-2005, 17:14
Ah, fair enough. I do remember something changed a while ago but I don't pay attention to what AOL do so I'm not too up on what could be wrong here.

Personally, I'd ditch AOL and get with an ISP lets you do what you want with your hardware.

Well, they've got front if nothing else! For what it's worth, I'd just leave it for now and sort it out in 3 months with your new ISP that will work with your hardware.
As a temporary thing, (I can't believe I'm about to say this), you could try setting up ICS, or download a proxy such as AnalogX, which I believe is at http://www.analogx.com/contents/download/network/proxy.htm.

ITS SORTED??????????????

I don't know exactly what it is but i reset everything, entered my email and password and hey presto! it worked...

Actually i tell a lie, i do have a theory as to what happened.
I had to change my password at Christmas and i think for some reason (probably AOL) the password didn't change properly. I had a similar problem with AOL when i had to reinstall their software.

Anyway.... I'd like to thank you all for your efforts over the last couple of days. You have all been brilliant!!!!!

Not bad, eh?

4 pages for a wrong password!

Was it the old or the new updated password that worked?

That's it, make me feel a bit more guilty!

If AOL had helped me when i asked for it, maybe all of this wouldn't have been needed.

Well, if you'd have asked before you signed up with AOL then all this wouldn't have happened!

This could go on until we get back to the beginning of all time, I think it's someones turn to say that it's your parents fault as this wouldn't have happened if you weren't born!......
