we paid £410 for a full 36,000 miles service (even though its only done 20,000miles) on the 8th june this year for our campervan. (fiat ducato, trigano tribute)

Today we booked it in for its first mot (its a 2004 reg) and it has failed.:(:o
They said it needs new brake cylinders on the back for the footbrake. One has burst and the other has seized up.

Since the service we've done no more than 300miles.

shouldn't this problem have shown up on the service as we paid for the brakes to be stripped?

Also they're saying it'll cost £50 for the mot test then about £300 for parts plus labour then vat. Its gonna cost us about £500 in total...... thats almost a grand spent with them in the space of two months on a vehicle thats done 20,000miles and is 3years old.

does this make sense?:help:

is it still covered by warranty? cos brake cyliders should be covered, also the faults should have been picked up by the service people, it might be worth going back to complain.but from my experience which isn't vast. when the MOT people test the vehicle they will only tell you that it's failed on the brakes .they can't really define problem like seized and leaking seals just by looking at it .to see these faults it has to be stripped down.i think you have a good reason to go back to the people that serviced it .hope this is of some help

cheers andy. :)

it was serviced by them - thats my point, i think they're conning us????? would these problems have shown up when it was serviced by them?

I'm just wondereing if they did the full service that we paid for at all...?

edited to add - its not covered by warranty anymore. :(

Well put it this way: have you ever heard of a poor car dealership owner?

Take a look at DC Cooks and Eric Stead's houses.

Licence to print money.

Where do I sign up?

yes definitely the faults should have shown up. you need to make a complaint about whats happened. and see what they say if it's not resolved them maybe a call to citizens advice they can be very helpful .but it sounds like you didn't get what you paid for.also i wouldn't let them carry out anymore work on it (unless it's to do what they should have done) go somewhere else there are plenty of backstreet garages that are a lot cheaper and better cos they're more personal.I.E you get to see the bloke in charge.

yes but not wanting to sound horrible ,Derek cook died in a car crash.hmmm was his car serviced at his own dealership...one has to ask.....sory if that 's in bad taste.

thats what I thought. they said that the problems would be caused by it been stood for a while?

I know nothing about engines or mechanics so they pretty much have me over a barrel, but I just feel like something doesn;t add up.
surely if they we're on the verge of going then it would have shown up on the full service as they (supposedly)stripped the brakes on the service and the report is ticked as ok...?!

it's not old enough to be rusted solid, but certainly the leaking seal would have been visible cos when you look at it you'de see fluid seeping out ,for a three year old vehicle that's not very ggod at all our works van is a transit and it passed the test today that's a W reg(2000) and no problems with the brakes this year or any other year upto now. are you in the AA if you are you could ring them and tell them you don't think the brakes are working properly they'de cum and have a look and advise you accordingly.worth a try ???

For an hour there was flood water up to 2/3 of wheel height, before we moved it, then it was left standing for a couple of weeks. could this have caused it?

that could have caused the brakes to stick on, but not seize, and not to cause the leak.

RESULT! - I picked the van up yesterday, they agreed that the problem should have been picked up on the service and if they'd picked it up correctly on the service then cylinder wouldn;t have burst - so all I had to pay for was the mot!

so glad - otherwise it would have been over £500.
