Hi all. Just looking for some advice on how to get involved, the best way to check a dogs pedigree, how to find a suitable line, best people to contact, what to look for in a bitch/dog and how to reasearch a dogs lineage. Also can someone tell me what 'line breeding' is? The reason I'm asking is because a friend has a pedigree doberman and has been suggested to by a local breeder that he should put him to stud as he is an exellent example. I've never had any experience with dobermans so wouldn't know what to look for or even where to start. He has all his papers from the kennel club but it's all foreign to me. I've advised him to get in touch with the breeder as there may be a contract on him that he's not aware of prohibiting breeding from him.

Any info would be greatly apreciated.

Edit: Sorry just saw the other breeding thread. If you want to cross post please feel free. :D

He should definitely speak to the breeder of his dog because the dog may have an endorsement to say it can't be bred from.

The breeder will also be able to give suggestions of compatible lines and the best thing to do is for him to get into showing, see what sort of results he gets in the ring (this will also help people to learn who the dog is - reputable breeders don't go to just anyone ;) )

He can also ask breeders around the ring about it.

I don't know much about studding but I think to actually be put to 'stud' not just 'randy male wants sex' he needs to have a stud book number and I'm not sure how you go about getting one of these - again breeder and show people should be able to help.

Also - contact the Kennel Club I'm sure they'll have info. :)

im sur you need to champion the dog before you get your stud book number, could b wrong, and a lot of people dont use studs unless they have been shown if hes a good exampl you should be able to get him finished quickly maybe even before the end of season, try the breeder, kennel club ect theyll help xx

Find a ringcraft class (there's one at Beighton and one in Wath upon Dearne that I know of and plenty more around - Beighton and Wath are closed at the mo - will give details of when they open again when I find it!), register there (usually £1 to register, £1 each week to train), they should have details of upcoming shows or you can try http://dog.biz/ for details of shows - get some practice at ringcraft, the trainers there can help in knowing how to handle him in the ring - then go to shows, you can launch straight into champ shows if you want - I did and personally think it was less stress for Takara at her first champ show than it was when we went to an open show which was a bit chaotic! The only thing is, you're less likely to get placed when inexperienced unless the dog really is good so it's a lot more money to pay for a champ show and not get placed than an open show.

You can enter as many shows around the year as you want, but get them to speak to a ringcraft instructor who will tell them which class to put the dog into for his best chances. Also make sure it's not his breeder that's judging ;) You're not allowed to show under the dog's breeder!

I'd definitely advise going to a ringcraft class - it'll give them invaluable advice on how to handle the dog, help to train the dog a good show stand and they will advise on how to enter shows and the like.

If you want details of Beighton and Wath let me know :)

...is my understanding too- best place for advice is the kennel club -here's couple of guides to be going on with (about putting your dog to stud and showing your dog)
http://www.thekennelclub.org.uk/item/1016
http://www.thekennelclub.org.uk/item/1014

and the doberman breed societies- there are a few out there, usually regional- try the Midland Doberman Club. http://www.midland-dobermann-club.co.uk/ or again, contact the kennel club who will put you in touch wit hthe nearest doberman breed club http://www.thekennelclub.org.uk/item/480

and as already suggested, you want to make sure you are not just repeating the same pedigree lines as are already in the dog - need to widen the gene pool whilst still maintaining what is good about the breed in terms of type, health and temperament.

If this dog is not already known in the show ring, I suspect most dobe bitch owners won't want to know, however attractive he might look - there are already hundreds if not thousands of 'eligible' dobe studs available nationally and internationally and good breeders will go for those.

Also, he'll need his full pedigree papers and kennel club registration in order to show and there a number of health defects in dboes which he will need testing for (and certification of).

id def reccomend the ring if thats what your friend wants to do, might even qualify for crufts next year if they get a wriggle on
