Hi
have you looked at friends reunited?
The Myers Grove list is pretty extensive - there has not been a lot of activity recently but I have made contact with several ex myers grove schoolmates through it.
I left in 1970 - but I do remember Mr Wardle - he was our year tutor - to a young kid of 11 he was pretty fearsome, but as I grew older and he went through the school with us (the year tutors stayed with the same kids all through their school life at that time) - he seemed to mellow and i grew quite fond of him by the time I left
BoroughGal 28-01-2005, 22:42 I went to Myers but in the mid 80's....
Anyone went then??
Mr Maslin was my year head.
Magneteer 29-01-2005, 16:19 I went to Myers Grove 1967-72 and certainly remember Mr.Wardle. One blast from his voice at some kid running down a corridor would freeze him to the spot. A pity there aren't more like him in todays schools. Myers Grove especially, could do with the likes of Mr. Wardle today. Sadly, he passed away some years ago as did Mr.Snell the PE teacher. Happy days.
FairyNormal 29-01-2005, 23:16 Sadly Mr Kearns the Drama/English teacher died a few years ago too. He was a real good laugh.
o happy days getting the cane from mr marshall mr wardall took us for RE he was well nasty shame about mr snell remember the other pe teacher mr pierce what a bas***d met shela sherwood a while back she is a nice lady do you remember sam wheatcroft, brent hawksworth, mick cooper pete hartley now all in there mid to late forties how time flies
herbiegrass 02-02-2005, 21:27 I left there about 70-71, and I too had the cane off Mr marshall for mucking about in the music lesson, I was one of the class clowns and would do a baby's voice, " It wasn't me sir" I cant recall the french teachers name, she had short dark blond hair and a short temper. Shaun Higgins, Paul Grubb,Kevin Martin and Dawn Hogg, the girl I fancied, were in my class.:heyhey:
herbiegrass
Dawn Hogg - was she blonde and lived off Langsett Road?

I went to myers grove but left in 67 the french teacher we had was a stunning woman named Miss smith very young at the time everybody fancied her I seem to remember there was some scandel with her!
I think the Crow brothers went there.

Good god - I remember Miss Smith!! - yes, for a secondary school teacher she was young - long blonde hair if I remember. The rumours we heard was that she was found with an Upper Sixth former in one of the Art Class cupboards -I guess they were examining his etchings!!

Yes so sorry to say. He was a top teacher. I was in all the school plays at Myers and he was the one who directed them along with Mr James and Mr Cooke (art teacher) did the scenery. We had some good laughs with him. Kept in touch after I left school and met up a couple of times.
As far as I know, he had a heart attack.
999tigger 06-02-2005, 20:24 Mr Wardle was a nice chap, but good at making you scared. I had a completely different view ehn I found out he had at least one mentally handicapped child to look after. Very time consuming.
Was Mr Cooke the really art teacher on the ground floor old man or the bit suave guy up on the third floor with the moustache?
There were 2100 when I started there.
I went to Myers grove 70,s any body knows peter smith, david bower or david poole, i recently spoke to kenny .
deelightful3 01-03-2005, 09:54 went to myers grove during

herbiegrass 09-03-2005, 20:31 :D Not sure but I think the french teacher was called, Mrs Scholfield or summatt like that.
Anyone used to play pennies on the slopes round the field, and lose your bus fare home?
I did and it was a long walk home back to Meadow Street.

 ahh yes , pennies on the slopes , never lost my bus fare , in fact i used to make a profit what with selling my sarnis and supplying one fag and a match for 2 pence , proper little spiv i was back then , carried on with my little scams after leaving school and ended up with the nickname of sharkey , its still with me today.
I use to know someone called ken scholey who i think went there in the 70s.
I remember Dawn Hogg she was hot
Can we organise a get together for all who went to myers grove between 67-72
let me know
Ajax - have you logged onto the Friends Reunited website.? There is a whole section on there about Myers Grove - pictures, memories etc.
Costs £5 to join, but that is for twelve months.
There was a reunion last year for all those who left in 1970 - it was at the new Hotel down by the Canal Wharf. Unfortunalty at the last minute I found I could not go, but apparanantly it was well attended
fridgeman 11-03-2005, 06:34 visited friends united site , not really much about 1972/3 (photo's i mean).
i can remember a girl called susan from my days at myers, she lived just off meadow street , there was a small jennel down the side of the meadow street hotel leading to st phillips road , they used to live in the last house on the left , can never remember her surname.used to be down that area every weekend but 1972 came and sadly i left myers, they were rehoused due to compulsory purchase and we lost touch , never seen or been in contact since.
herbiegrass 11-03-2005, 20:15 :D I lived opposite the lane you are talking of, and it led to Hoyle Street, I wonder if the girl you are thinking of was from the Bains family?
I used to knock around with Alec Bains and he taught me to smoke.
I think he had a sister called Susan and one called Mary. they lived in the first house at the end of the lane if I remember right, at the bottom of the lane down past the Meadow was a meatal bollard to stop cars going down, and in the yard adjacent in the top corner was Mr Rycroft who owned a very old car, a little like a model t ford. hope this brings back memories.
:hihi:
OntarioOwl 12-03-2005, 01:25 I went there between 1979-1984. Had the old codger Wardle for RE one year. Do they still teach RE? Its not politically correct in North America.

Hiya all you Myers Grove people
I was one of the "first batch " of pupils who went to Myers Grove in 1960. Mr Wardle came with us from Crookesmoor school, I had also been in his class since I was 11.
He was a tough teacher , but he was one of the best and a great bloke as well. He had a brilliant knack of "seeing " out of the back of his head, and launching the blackboard rubber at you, and it never missed the target !!! It certainly taught you to pay attention .
I left in 1961 at 15 years old ( as was the norm then ) to join the Sheffield workforce and earn my few quid a week.
deecee
Deecee - I followed you at crookesmoor a few years later - we used to live at the off licens on teh corner just below the school.
remember Mr Brekin and Mr Hill at Crookes moor?
Hiya Docmel, I have sent you a PM, mainly because I don't want to detract from the original thread of Myers Grove ,
deecee:)
fridgeman 16-03-2005, 15:26 :) can you remember the summer fair we used to have , i remember one year i came up with the idea of running a goldfish stall, you know the one where you have to get a ping-pong ball into a goldfish bowl whoever completes this recieved a goldfish (surprise) our stall came top , we took most money on the day :D
Bumped into Prof Mel Jones (geography/History teacher 1961-1967). He was in Rotherham General hospital last week. He is a diabetic and had an infection. Recognised him by the voice recollected old times at MG.
I think my sister left in '76. She runs one of the reunion things over on friends reunited. They just had one a couple of weeks ago.
I left in 89 and pretty much stayed where I was as lower school was part of Loxley college by that time.
I am too young for this thread. Any of you people need help crossing the road? ;)
micheleagle 29-06-2006, 13:39 I was in Mr Wardle's year does anyone remember him ?
Maybe someone out there was in the same year as me please reply for a chat and catch up on the old school day's.

bassplayer 29-06-2006, 13:46 I left in 1979 but went back 1979-1980 for an extra year to retake the 5th Year (you could do that at that time).
I have a lot of good memories at the school and a lot of bad. Mr Wardle did make racist comments about me and I challenged him in class about it..as follows;
end part of the conversation...
MW - "and your sort of people should know that"
me - " excuse me sir what do you mean by your sort of people?"
MW - "you know your sort, your black kind" ...under his breath
me "you mean black sir, why are you singling me out of all the class? thats not right and I don't think its fair. You point me out and say YOUR sort of people and then mutter under your breath about black?"
MW - "are you arguing with me boy?"
THe class went quiet
I stood up and, well it went like this....
me -"I think you owe me an apology for that racist comment"
MW - "SIT DOWN NOW!"
me - "no I want my apology or I will take it further. You have embarressed me in front of the class so apologise to me in front of the class....thats all"
33 heads turn from me to Mr Wardle who I might had was turning several shades of pink....to....red.
MW - "I .....apologise for that comment, now Sit Down"
me - " thank you sir" and I sat down.
Thirty minutes later and several hundred handshakes later.....and well the rest is history. Even when I see some old schoolmates yars later they still mention the incident and well it is still something to smile about.
micheleagle 29-06-2006, 13:53 we were in awe of these teachers or scared, had a freind how used to draw a cartoon of wardle in his cloak as a vulture. A few decent teachers, but bad times mainly we had a great time at morley st/ rivelin and stayed on as it was made a middle school as too many kids for myers, had a reunion there at rivelin 6 years ago met up with old headmaster and a few old mates great memoies!!

You may know my older brother Barry. If you do pm me to discuss

Those names particularly the teachers ring many bells. Mr Bishop used play cricket in the playground with collapsable wickets. Boy!...could he spin a ball; he would get almost all the children out before the end of dinner. Mr Simmonds had a yellow Saab and thought it was the only car ever to be built. Do you remember Barry Haughton?, he is my older brother.
I was also in the orchestra, I played the violin and did the same at MGrove in Room 18. The teacher was Mr Robertson along with Mr Sharpe.

A good class of parents we had to go in assembly at my daughter's school to get cert. That was more scary than the test! We felt like 10 year olds.Looked you up on friends site.

Very nasty. The carney fella didn't like me, and I didn't like him. He also marked me down at A level for things like margin too small, ink too green, and sh*t like that. Decided to test why I was getting slated. Used my results in the style of a lad in my form who was a favourite. He got A-, I got D-... My bloody results were better, too. Took it forward - supposedly as evidence - and got kicked out of 6th Form. Thanks. Anyway, took me away from the science bullsh*t I was headed...

Took it forward - supposedly as evidence - and got kicked out of 6th Form. Thanks. Anyway, took me away from the science bullsh*t I was headed...
Like I said he wasn't a nice person

I went to myers grove school from 1972 - 77. i remeber Wardle. He was fearsome but when you got to understand him he was a good bloke. he had a real angry presence about him but was always quite fair i felt. Do you remember Mr Rochale the maths teacher. He had such an awful time from us kids and we ended up learning virtually nothing. There was many a time when he had to call in Mr Burgin in to rescue him ( games teacher ) when things got too heavy! God when i look back we were awful to that gut. Feel quite ashamed of myself.
Other memories were the summer fete which was always quite good and well attended. Weather conditions then were much more predictable, The advent of summer, the smell of newly cut grass grass on the playing field carried out by 'bayleaf' the gardener and the start of summer sports. The horrible autumns and winters and being made to stand outside in the pelting rain during break time. Having to bloody well go on cross country to the Robin Hood Inn with just your shorts and top on and no underpants. How ridiculous was that! Being envious of kids who lived locally who could pop back home for dinner and not come back if it was games lesson.
Does anyone remember Mr Sideberry (think that was his name ) - a welsh guy. I hated that teacher. I remember him seeing me chew gum assembly and as a punishment he made me remove all the dirty chewing gum from under the desks on each floor of upper school. A right sadist!

broncolives 19-04-2008, 17:54 Mr bannister or Banno to the kids. Great guy was the geography teacher at Walkley but when he was there it was still a senior school and he moved along with the kidz in the summer of 62.
If you did anything wrong in his class he made you sit at the top of the iron fire escape which led from his room.
Chapped arse for a week if he made you sit there long enough in the winter.
I remember about 7 years after I left i was working at myers and popped in to see him and he still remembered me. Although he named me amongst the rogues. lol
happy memories
we used to ask mr bannister about his holidays abroad in his little mini. then bingo out came the slide projector. brill thats what i call teaching lol. tel boy
broncolives 21-04-2008, 07:27 So even Myers did not change him.
At Walkley it was his war exploits Lol
thomaspaine 30-07-2008, 09:11 went to myers during the eighties , mr lloyd was my year tutor
I remember David Oxley - he was there in 1886ish when I was. I think it must be a different one but surely the same family? His sister (Karen?) was Mr Kearns girlfriend for a while. David was good at making tea pots.
I also remember Peter kearns - I was a member of his drama group even when he moved to Gleedless School he still ran a group for us Myers Grove pupils. I had a mad crush on him ..... and Mr. Eyre!
Mr Wardle was at the school in the 80's when I was, I seem to recall he died but not sure if it was after he retired. Do you remember Mr Warton? Another RE teacher - always seemed like he was on another planet.
went to myers during the eighties , mr lloyd was my year tutor
Wasn't there something a bit strange went on in the news involving him?
Padster89 14-08-2008, 22:23 I left in 1978 and remember a few teachers Surnames: Perry, Martin, Wolstenholme, Manning, Royston, Gordon, Lever, Crook, Harrison, Fahey, Hopkins, Hawkins, Reed, Thorne, Tomkinson, Maslin, Saunders, Siberry, Wright, Hill, Wardle, Burgin, Snell, Rhodes, Hollister,
Boyce, Fry,
gal-tray 15-08-2008, 07:46 can anyone remember mr furniss and miss barratt mr furniss was my head of year he was great very strict but fair
Yes i remember Mr Furnis, and Mrs Furniss! - Last time I saw them they were walking through a pretty little town in the Cotswolds called Winchcombe obviously on holiday, in the early 90's. I think they would have been shocked to see an ex Myers grove Pupil so far south but I moved down to Worcestershire in 1990. Miss Barrett was my PE teacher and she was scary but she could be fun too.
thomaspaine 27-08-2008, 09:56 Wasn't there something a bit strange went on in the news involving him?yes it was around his ex wife and her new boyfriend, i think the boyfriend tried to kill his ex wife and son , then went to france where he tried to kill himself

herbiegrass 01-02-2009, 22:04 What about Sheila Sherwood "get out of that sandpit immediatly"and Mr Snell "do not run in the corridor boy". "but i'm late for my lesson sir" WACK!! "don't answer me back boy,on your way":suspect:
Mr Wardle was a nice chap, but good at making you scared. I had a completely different view ehn I found out he had at least one mentally handicapped child to look after. Very time consuming.
Was Mr Cooke the really art teacher on the ground floor old man or the bit suave guy up on the third floor with the moustache?
There were 2100 when I started there.
Wasn't the 'suave guy on the third floor with the moustache' Mr. Astle? He was the only reason I took art - I'm still hopeless at it!!!!

I was there at the same time as you!My year tutor was also David Rhodes and can vaguely remember some of those names. When you think back it was a really good school (we didn't think so at the time!) but look at it now.It had every facility you could imagine, laboratories, machine shops, art and craft rooms all fully fitted out with immaculate tools and equipment. Some of the discipline we had to endure wouldn't go amiss these days,it was unheard of to even answer a teacher back and woe betide anyone that strayed from the uniform regulations and had long hair!(lads).I remember the summer camps to Cornwall in the mini buses and sea canoeing with little or no supervision, imagine trying to get permission for those things these days,no chance!

Hi All,
Just joined Sheffield Forum when I saw this thread.Im Brent Crawshaw (crunchie) went to myers between 1969 and 1974.My Brother Kevin Crawshaw (also called crunch) was in the year below. We were very different he was red haired very funny and a good scrapper,I was studious and went to the physics club ! Anyone remember us? I remember dave oxley, gary fisher, shaun and damon higgins, paul grub and all the bramwell gang.I used to go out with Julie Skelton (from Tapton) from Bramwell Gardens.
I recently started having a pint with Radish (Paul Radford) and Cornish (Paul Thorneloe) both great funny lads.Anyone remember Sover Wong ? I found him again on Facebook and hes coming to stop at my house soon.Im trying to locate Gladys (Kevin Glasby) from wynn gardens, any ideas?
My favourite teacher was Roy Woustenholme (physics teacher). He was a real nuclear physisist and an absoloute genious.
Ive changed a bit,I used to hate PE but now I go to gym 3x a week! our Kev is just the same as he was then,Long ginger hair and a great laugh.
love a get together.
If anyone can remember Mrs Hedley, she recently passed away
:(
I was at Myers from 1972 to 1977.
My sister was in Mr Wardle's year. I was in Mr Burgin's year (if that's how you spell it). My Brother was 2 years below me and my nephew also went to myers some years later. The teachers were strict but they probably had to be. I left Myers with nowt as soon as I got work - big mistake -it has taken me the next 30 years to catch up.
I do remeber Mr Rhodes, as I once went to a christian action camp at Cliff College with him and several others. Anyone else remeber the trip? Does anyone remeber "Touche"? I can never remember his real name; he was a maths teacher and taught fencing. I went on a summer camp to Buttermere in the lakes when I was about 12 or 13 and Mr Snell was one of the teachers that took us. I came home covered in midge bites but had a good time. Anyone else remember being on the same camp?
I remember Mr Rhodes.he was my history teacher and mr rochele "touche turtle" he used to take some stick from the kids even then....YOU BAD LOT !
Any of these names out there ?Jeff Smith,Raymond damms,Alan Charlesworth,Mick Hodgson,Valerie Hibbard,
who was the best looking girl in the school. My nomination Marie Thorneloe !
Lostinfrance 29-10-2010, 16:31 Hiya. I'm new to this forum and happened across the thread. Went to MGCS during the 60's. Can remember Sheila Sherwood, Mr Wardle (6th form tutor) Mr Hill, Mr Furnace and was incredibly in love with Mr Orme the Maths teacher. People in my class were Lynn Brearly, Janet Pearson, Cathryn Booth, Alex Hough, Julie McNamara. Average of 40 students in each class when I was there. Really wanted to be in Ghana house but they put me in India - I hate yellow.

I didn't go to Myers Grove, but had many friends who did, mainly in the 1970s. I also think I went to school with Mr Wardle's son, Barry. Does anyone know if I have the right father / son link?
Don't think you have the right father son link. Barry Tall lad wore black rimmed glasses?
LOst in France_ Seem to remember the name Janet Pearson what class number were you in?

Bit of a coincidence if his son's name was Barry and I knew a Barry Wardle with Myers Grove connections. Barry and I went to King Edwards but I am fairly sure his dad was a teacher at Myers Grove and they lived somewhere nearby. I heard that Barry died some years back - sad. Oh hum, sorry if it is the wrong person.
Lostinfrance 30-10-2010, 16:56 Hiya Asaw. Could have been Janet Pearce - grey cells dying too quickly! Started in 1A4 then 2A2, 3A2, 4A2, 5A2 then the lower sixth but left mid year as some b*****d broke my heart. Was vice captain of the First XI hockey team and got school colours for it - nice new navy coloured tie with gold acorns on it. Remember the school motto - quercus magna e glanda parva or words to that effect. Was very very very shy when I was ickle.
Lostinfrance 31-10-2010, 13:20 Was that a request, demand or statement? Or just in the afternoon? I just don't get this abbreviated language.
Please post me private mail

Lost In France
Were you in the same class as Keith Pursehouse, Heather Shepherd, Liz Trower and Susan Davidson?
I left Myers in 78, remember a lot of those names Siberry for sure, he hated havin me at (His) school kept sayin he,d have me expelled, didn,t workout for him thou. Bumped into him one night after i left in the chippie on malin bridge **** his self, had wife and kids with him thou so let it go. APART FROM HIM SOME GOOD TIMES. Used to hang around with both cox,ys dave and nige started in 2d2 i think, remember a girl called Janice, nice girl. was that Michael Pursehouse, if so he died a few years ago i heard found in his flat after several day,s used to go to the lane with him got locked up with him at a good few away matches, sad he,s gone.
Elaine K 20-05-2012, 18:53 I was at Myers Grove 1964 -69 when Mr Hill was headmaster. My favourite teachers were Robin Grinter (History), Mr. Poynton (English) and Mr Waugh and Mr Howarth (Geography). I went to the closing of the school last summer and met a few old school mates there and - Robin Grinter a lot older but still the lovely man I remembered.

I remember all those teachers. I left in 1969. Our sixth form tutor was Mr. Poynton (taught English). I know that Mr Furniss married the teacher who taught cookery and played tennis and they are still living in Sheffield. People in my class were Susan Harrison, Hazel Armstrong, Howard Keighthly, John Nicholson to name a few. I am still in touch with a few but would love a reunion before we all get to old to enjoy it.
