Sitting reading through many of the posts on here and in the wider SF, there's obviously a great deal of 'ignorance' - I don't mean that in a nasty way - about different disabilities and illnesses. What do people think to having a section where you can give first hand information about your experience of a disability and/or illness?

I don't mind going first if people think it would be a useful addition?

What do you think?

I personally think that giving as positive an image, for want of a better word, of people with disabilities and illnesses can only be a good thing.

Were you thinking of 'good news' stories or something like that?

I think it sounds a good idea, hardly anyone I speak to has heard of the illness my son had, I even got some posters for my doctors to put in the waiting room so as to inform people and they refused! Didnt want to 'scare' anybody I think

Some people seem to think that a 'disability' is something the majority of people are born with and that it won't happen to them. Both facts are wrong.

Then others think that because you have a 'disability' you're somehow a kindred spirit to all other people with a disability and you know all the issues. Again wrong.

There are lots of different disabilities - many i've never even heard of, let alone understand what the impact is on people and what they can do.

I was thinking of an area where we can dispell a few myths, explain what the implications are or particular illnesses/disabilities and then the positive aspects and what people can do (and sometimes how they do it).

It would also be good to hear from carers how they overcome their own difficulties. I've always thought that many people tend to fear what they don't understand - quite a reasonable and common reaction.
