On a more serious note mine just did the same after a windows update. I've found that windows updates often cock up my computers.

Start Help&support System Restore Roll Back To Earlyer Time

but before that (as youll lose ALL updates it did at that time if you did more than 1 and obviously some can be critically needed and it may be hard to pinpoint which one was the git) you could try the following see if you can get it back before system restore
do you have the speaker icon near the clock? if so open that, check the volumes up and none are set to mute.
check the actual volumes up on the computer
go into start/control panel/sounds and audio devices/volume - does it say a device at the top? mine says c-media wave device if it doesnt youve lost it and will have to reinstall the drivers (youll need the soundcard or motherboard cd)
the sounds tab is where i test to check for sound when im fiddling

ah the volume in the mixer had turned down? does occasionly.
on my cisco course i got told check the simple things before owt else, even my tutor said he'd fell for taking a puter to bits before finding out it was a simple thing, i myself have spent 10 minutes trying to find why no sound on a neighbours puter before finding the speakers not switched on at the wall, first time id encountered wall plug speakers

you can always find drivers on the net, but you either have to know the laptop model / make or in the case of desktops find out the mobo or soundcard make/model (that can be difficult cos they are notorious for no info)
