View Full Version : Help! Barnsley landmarks needed for film
ed9morelies 20-08-2007, 16:10 I'm a Sheffield-based filmmaker being asked to shoot something about all of South Yorkshire...I don't know much about Barnsley. I was wondering if any of you kind folks could point me in the direction of some excellent views/landmarks/sights etc that I could use in a montage that to people from the region would immediately shout 'this is Barnsley'.....
I expect many a wise crack.....but hopefully some serious suggestions too?
there's some nice old buildings in the town centre(town hall), and you get a nice view down the hillside if you sit in the upper tier of the East stand at Oakwell.
metalman 20-08-2007, 17:19 Is there not some sort of tower in somewhere called Locke Park? I've seen pictures of it on the web but whether it's still there or whether it's accessible, I don't know.
Alternatively, how about the new bus station? That's certainly erm.. distinctive, in the sense that it wouldn't look out of place in somewhere like Barcelona but does rather in Barnsley.
metalman 20-08-2007, 17:23 Here you go: Locke tower (http://www.follytowers.com/locke.html).
metalman 20-08-2007, 17:27 And Barnsley bus station (http://www.barnsley.gov.uk/bguk/New_Arrivals/New%20Arrivals%20Information/Bus%20and%20Trains).
Barnsley main (oaks) colliery
A definete landmark left there as a tribute to the Barnsley miners and the men who lost their lives in the pit disaster.
It's near the football ground somewhere
upinwath 20-08-2007, 19:49 If you ask all nice at the town hall I know they sometimes allow people to go to the top of the tower.
I may be able to find the bloke who used to run the town hall. What he dosn't know about the place isn't worth knowing.
plaiting fog 20-08-2007, 21:52 Wentworth Castle has just re-opened, I understand. Close to there, the building that hosts Northern College -nice, similar to Bretton Hall. The Deer Farm (at Round Green) down the lane from both those places has young fallow deer in its fields at the moment -not a landmark but could be a pleasant filler. All nice scenery round there.

getto_sniper 20-08-2007, 22:06 is barnsley in sheffield

No but he's a sheffield film maker so unless a mod gets as worried as a welsh sheep no one will care. :D
getto_sniper 20-08-2007, 22:12 yes but why post it here

Maybe it'll get moved but I'll leave it to the mods to decide if a sheffield filmmaker is about sheffield even if he's asking about another town. That or he made a simple mistake that really has little bearing on the thread anyway.
Long and the short is I'd sooner offer suggestions that have a pop at a bloke trying to do something.
the OP requested info on barnsley, is based in sheff. there are a few of us northern immigrants here you know . .. . . (awaits post on anti immigration.....)
andrewchase 20-08-2007, 23:45 I used to live in Barnsley. It was ironic but appropriate that the only highrise building in the centre was the DSS :D

So moan to the mods and ask that the thread be removed and the poster banned.
That or get out of your own arse.
So the bloke may have put it in the wrong place. Means nothing to most people, may mean a minor bit of work for a mod but not a hanging offence.
I believe the word "whatever" may work well here.
Anyway back to the topic.
The OP may not be aware that the remaking barnley project is to start in the first quarter of 2008. This will mean a massive change for the town with a redevelopment of the whole of one quarter of the town.
The Metropolitan centre, Markets, old council offices and the whole of the area up to the railway crossing is to go.
Now would be a very good time to make a record the 1970s version of barnsley with a potential follow up when the new version is built.
ed9morelies 21-08-2007, 10:43 Thanks very much indeed for all the suggestions. I'll look into them all.
That redevelopment strategy sounds very interesting...if I get to the town hall I might ask around about...see if they want anything making.
Sorry if I posted in the wrong place!
:-)
barnsleybroker 21-08-2007, 10:48 The Town Hall is pretty distinctive, people would probably recognise that. Also the outdoor part of the market, grubby though it is. Oakwell Brewery?
