A 10-year-old British schoolgirl saved the lives of hundreds of people in southern Asia by warning them a wall of water was about to strike, after learning about tsunamis in geography class

I never heard to TSunami when I was at school ,got to blame my geography teacher

What is SO scary is that geologists throughout the world must have seen the quake before the wave hit the coast.

It just seems inconceivable that there wasn't a phone number or clearing house that could have been contacted to tip off the governments of the region. The Pacific Rim countries have had such a warning system for about 40 years, I think.

But good for her! Hope she gets a rewrad for quick thinking, and that her teachers get a pat on the back!

Just heard that the local economy will also have a double blow as the fishing industry( the main source of income) will be hit as people are not going to eat the fish as they think that the fish have eaten all the dead bodies from the sea.

There are tourists out there on holiday spending all their days in the morgues identifying and logging bodies to help when the DNA experts come.
It is such a trajedy on such epic proportons.
I will not complain or think I am hard done to again.
This has helped to get things in to perspective.

How lucky we all are to live here in Sheffield and in such an area where the worst disaster we get is strong winds knocking slates off roofs or sometimes floods which devastate the area for a while , but at least we are able to get back on our feet when the insurance claims are settled and it makes me thank my lucky stars.

Well done to all the British Public and also to all those out there who are volunteering, wherever they are from. We just hope that the aid gets through to the worst hit area of Indonesia which has been total devastation.

With regards to Indonesia, I believe the USS Abraham Lincoln, an American aircraft carrier, is using it's helicopters to deliver aid in to the hardest hit areas of Aceh province.

I'd not thought of that issue with the fishing industry - I did, however, wonder whether the fishing trade would have been hit due to fish being killed and the boats being smashed up.

Yes Joe, I saw the helicopter this am on Sky News. There are so few people there now, many hiding in the mountains as they are probably scared or too ill to move.

I am sure they will get there.

Just hope it is not too late. There are no children there.
They have all gone.

Many of the people did not speak to good English so it was hard to understand what had happened exactly

Will they be replacing the 'money off coupon' link on left hand side of the site with one to the DEC site when the xmas sales are over ? Could be a good way to help increase donations to them...

I doubt it, some of the links on there help the SF server running.

How about posting a "sticky" notice with the details of how to donate - that is somthing that can be done straight away with minimal effort.

In the longer term, someone in Sheffield Chat is suggesting approaching the council with regards to Sheffield twinning with an affected town, to help them re-build. Maybe the forum could help with that?

I'll take that remark with the contempt it deserves.
