I walked past the Halcyon, and according to a message in the window, it seems as if the place is closing down after the August Bank Holiday.

Is that the Halcyon Bar on Division Street?

I remember a few evenings in there in 1999 / 2000 - I think we were only thrown out once when one of my developers got very drunk and did soem sort of crazy dance.

Any reason why they're closing? I'm surprised, to be honest - though I've not been in there for a while.

Thats the one. I don't know why they're closing, but they are.

No real loss is it?

No doubt it will reopen as something equally bland within a few weeks.

Halcyon used to be an essential part of a decent night out a few years ago but not been in for ages

I must admit it woudlnt be my first choice of drinking venue - but to be fair, the Forum & the Halycon were quite different to everything else in Sheffield when they first opened - it was the other corporate bars that jumped on the same bandwagon.

er.. yes they are... but they not a corporate chain... although - at a push - you could count two as a chain.. i suppose.. sort of...

I can remember being in sheffield for night on the beers with a friend from out of town who worked for big brewery and he was amazed that the two bars were independent...

It was, and the Forum was a Double Glazing showroom. The Halcyon was originally the town house of the Duke of Devonshire, and traces of the old house can still be seen around the place.

If Kane does as good a job with the new one as he has with the previous ones (with and without a partner) it will be a great venue. Good luck to all concerned.

The problem is that like many things in the uk recently the trend has moved towards cheap beer in cheap nasty pubs.

The traces of the old town house are still there - though for the most part not in the public areas - I worked at the Halcyon some time ago and it is really grand on the upper floors, and the downsatirs in what would have been the staff room were, when I worked there - proper creepy.

You might be getting mixed up with the Forresters - which used to be further down on the corner and has since been a succession of failed bars.

Halcyons awful.. good riddance .. may it be reborn as something better :D

bout time, overpriced looks poor from the outside
