hi i bought my partner a laptop just t browse net a few weeks ago off the forum
after it being ok for 3 wks it now gets into windows then turns off power it dosent do it everytime but 95% of time it does any help would be appreaciated thanks.

sounds like its the battery m8, take the battery out and boot it whilst its plugged into the mains to see if that is the problem

More info needed, how old is the unit ? op system .? is the jack plug loose on power connection..?

xp on an an old system will drastically slow things down,
may even be the cause of your problem, depending on wat you have inside.

xp requires a minimum status just to start up, if you then start filling yer lappy with other stuff like files and cookies it will soon start to stutter and shut down.

just my thoughts.........

first guess would be that is is either overheating and the thermal protection is kicking in and shutting it down or that windows is crashing and shutting it down.

if it has a floppy get memtest from here (http://www.memtest.org/download/1.70/memtest86+-1.70.floppy.zip) and boot up with that and if it is overheating it will shutdown while running that quite quickly

you could also try booting into safemode going into Administrative Tools from control panel and seeing if there is anything in the event viewer that says what is causing the shutdown assuming that it is not overheating
