View Full Version : Computer infected? helP!
franc1987 30-12-2004, 19:59 Hey everyone
the other day i logged my dad off my pc (he doesnt get that he has to sign out when hes done in my room) and when i logged onto mine some filth had downloaded its self. its not porno or owt like that just extremely annoying!
Whenever i click to go onto my emails (i use msn explorer on windows xp) it sends me to a naff search page and loads of pop up ads appear saying im infected with something. (see this here :http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v221/franc1987/infected.jpg ) this also happens when i try to post a message in one of my msn groups too.
I have looked in my add and remove programs list and the only thing i can find that looks slightly odd is "search assistant unistall" and when i click uninstall its like it uninstalls it really fast and then its downloaded back onto my PC if that makes sense cos it just reappears as soon as iv deleted it. There is also a long list of things called "windows xp hot fix" and i do not know what they are. There are tons of them! (see screen shot here: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v221/franc1987/infected2.jpg
So aswell as all this going on i log on this morning and theres loads of strange icons on my desk top that simply wont delete like poker, holidays and card games?? (as seen here http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v221/franc1987/desktop.jpg )
To add to the problems a few weeks ago my norton anti virus just stopped working and dad hasnt been able to get new software from work.
I am praying it isnt virus' or spy ware cos i just dont have the money to buy new software! help! does anyone know whats going on.
Oh yeh and these are new things iv installed recently (that i can think of)
Canon camera software
MP3 player software
bear share downloading thing
webcam software
CDex converter
this other naff converter that didnt work
thanks!
EDIT: the link for the windows "windows xp hot fix" thing wont work and iv tried loading it onto photo bucket again but its diverting like it does with my emails. is it slowly over taking my pc? :gag:
EDIT #2: the windows hot fix link should be working now.
BarneyGumble 30-12-2004, 20:25 I'm no expert.. but I've had a few problems lately and managed to sort them out. It sounds like spywear, If you download spybot, It's free (see http://www.download.com/Spybot-Search-Destroy/3000-8022_4-10289035.html?tag=lst-0-2 ) or simlar programme - Do a search on www.download.com, I'd then sort by user rating to find the best rated software - a lot of the software is free or free to try. You'll also find some anti virus software on there as well which you really need, Hope this helps.
franc1987 30-12-2004, 20:28 this isnt going to make it even worse is it? sorry for being sceptical but u never no.... no offence
BarneyGumble 30-12-2004, 20:33 Search for the software at www.download.com and read the user reviews then make your own decision - it worked for me!
franc1987 30-12-2004, 20:58 hey
the spyware doctor thing seems to have gotten rid of the annoying pop ups horrid destop items and generally cleaned up the pc. 158 spyware item thingys were found! :o
As for the inbox problem that hasnt gone. It has stopped diverting to the search page but still looks like this :
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v221/franc1987/inbox.jpg
is this a fault with hotmail or my PC?
thanks a lot
BarneyGumble 30-12-2004, 21:31 Not sure I think it maybe hotmail but I don't use it.
I'd still get an anti virus programme from the download.com site and run a full system scan, I found a few I was unaware of.

franc1987 07-01-2005, 22:24 Hi
Well the spyware doctor seemed to work but every time i went on a website the icons reappeared and i had to scan again. It did find something like 900 infections or something orriginally which i was shocked at! Anyway i got rid of the spyware doctor and the icons stopped coming so i dont no what thats about although i still cant get into hotmail and am now having to go through out look express
All seemed to be going well until the other day i logged on and my dad had been on the computer and a window popped up saying something about updating and the first time i clicked no but the second time it popped up i hit return without looking and wam this crap downloaded onto my PC and it turned out to be a dial up connection charging £3.00 a minute or something so now every so often about every few hours i get booted from the net and have to delete this dial up thing to get back on but this tab appears at the bottom next to the start button saying connected= x number of minutes cost= and then it goes up by £1.50 for 10 seconds or so im connected. Is this for real? is it really charging me that money? The dial up is named NV. Im not worried cos i no i havent downloaded it after all iv not been on any dodgy sites, and i dont pay the bill. I dont use any other sites but this, msn groups, my college email provider and hotmail (where i open nothing but who i no)
Any advice??
Appart from that computer problems solved! Thankyou so much!
the programs detailed by vidster will sort this out.
It could indeed be dialing a premium rate number, although the maximum is £1.50/minute.
Get some anti virus (avg free edition), get a firewall and get adaware. Run them all on a regular basis and set them to auto update as often as possible.

Those peer to peer downloading things are notorious for getting virus infected downloads onto your PC.
Just thought I'd point this out.
It could be something you've downloaded with bearshare that's causing teh problems.

If you have no antivirus installed then you should install AVG7.
If you have not got a Firewall installed then install Sygate.
These two will work in the background on your pc making sure you don't get any viruses.
Ad-aware and Spybot are two programs that will search your pc for spyware and remove it. I recommend installing both of them because one will find objects that the other one may miss.
CWShredder is a program that has been specifically designed to hunt down and remove items from the 'CoolWebSearch' family. These are usually the toolbars that people see appear from nowhere. They can also redirect your browser to any page it wants.
I would/have installed them all as well as a couple more to stop spyware getting on my system in the first place.
