As the title says, how do I stop MSN and Yahoo messengers loading up when I turn on the PC?

Well, to be precise, It doesn't do it when I log on under my settings but when my son logs on on his settings, it takes ages because of MSN and Yahoo. He's only 7 so doesn't use either!

Any help gratefully recieved.

Thank you.

You need to log in to his account then go to the options/preferences in both Yahoo and Messenger and disable the option to start with windows. Failing that run 'msconfig' and take a peek in there for any instance of either and disable.

see if they're in your 'startup' folder. This is where programs auto-launch from on start up. It's quite handy to add the programs you always use, into this folder. At work I have AutoCAD, windows explorer and outlook in there

For MSN click on Tools, then Options, then click on the general tab.. There should be a tick box which at the side will say 'Run Messenger when I log onto windows' Uncheck that box and then MSN won't load up until you double click on it :D

For Yahell, Click on Messenger from the main screen.. The select 'General' Category from the list of options.. Again another tick box which at the side will say 'Automatically start Yahoo Messenger' Uncheck that box the same applies, you will have to manually start Yahoo every time you connect to the t'internet

fnkysknky is right.
Log on to your son's account and go to Start. next go to RUN and type msconfig, then press enter. In msconfig you will see a tab (normally in the top right corner)called Startup. Open this tab and look for any instances of Yahoo or MSN. uncheck them (there may be more than one) and press apply, then enter.
You will be prompted to restart your computer. Press ok and the job is done;)

My View: I have unchecked everything in the startup list except my antivirus, antispyware and firewall programs!.
Anything else can easily be started as and when needed by going to the programs list (Start/ All Programs).

Hope this helps ;)

i use autorunman or auto start manager. some odd things start up on your computer after a while of surfing!

simply tick the boxes you want/dont want

cant remember where i got the programs though.

try download.com and im sure you can find something that may discover more things starting up that you never even knew exsisted on your computer

Interesting thread as the first response gave the answer for the specific instances required but for anyone who's wondering how to turn off other programs at startup the other utilities mentioned are useful for stopping them in their tracks.

Just to add a couple of utilities to the list:

> Startman
> EasyCleaner (which includes a whole slew of other stuff).

As with everything though, be careful what you do and don't turn off, as you can break your windows installation or other programs you use if you get carried away. A classic example is that of Norton's liveupdate which is vital to make sure your system checks its status and updates itself, so if you go and turn it off at startup you effectively stop your AV from updating itself.

Just so's you know :)

I could have expanded on my answer but I was feeling lazy :D
