View Full Version : The Simpsons Effect - watching films after they've been 'Homered'
Last night I watched one of my favourite films 'A Few Good Men' on ITV2. Now, Simpsons fans will remember that in one episode Sideshow Bob spoofs part of this film in a courtroom scene. The result was that when Jack Nicholson took the witness stand I kept expecting him to shout "You can't handle the truth, no truth handler you!" in true Sideshow Bob fashion!
Similarly, I can't watch the opening of Kubrick's 'The Shining' now without expecting a close up of the car in which Jack Nicholson (AGAIN!) is asked by his wife 'Did we lock the house up?'. And later I expect the little boy to take a chain saw to the maze..., like Bart in 'The Shinning'.
I just can't look at certain films in the same way now! :)
Yep, I do the same. Didn't you think Simpsons the movie was a bit pants though? I think a Simpsons spoof would have been a bit better, don't you think? Joe teh P?

Not seen the movie yet - and please lay off the 'teh' stuff. It's very boring. :)
er sorry, just a small joke.
You should see the film. It isn't the best but a definate Simpsons moment. Back to the topic anyway, what do you think about a coplete Simpsons spoof then? Taking the mick out of other films? I think it would be great.
It's not a film spoof, so I'm going off at a bit of a tangent, but I loved 'Brother From Another Series'; the one where David Hyde Pierce (Niles from 'Frasier') turns up as Sideshow Bob's brother :D .
Beakerzoid 17-08-2007, 04:40 It's not just Sinpsons spoofs that have this effect. Watching Goldfinger a few weeks back on the big screen I caught myself chuckling a few times when reminded of Austin Powers - especially when Odd Job is about to throw his hat. "Who throws a shoe? That really hurt!"
EdnaKrabappe 17-08-2007, 08:59 Yeah Cape Fear was never quite so scary after watching Cape Feare. With sideshow bob doing his presses with his tattoos such as die bart die.
The best part of that episode is the notes... all from Bob except one which says "I kill you scum" which is from Homer. :hihi: and how Bart is laid in bed imagining everyone is coming to kill him!
A couple of days ago I watched the Simpson's episode where Edna K is wooed by the mysterious 'Woodrow', who is actually Bart playing a practical joke. At the end of teh episode, Woodrow 'leaves' and sends a letter that contains the words 'Where I am going, you cannot follow'. Very touching.
The other evening I caught part of Hollyoaks where Carmen(?) is trying to get her Albanian Borther-in-Law (sham marriage for him to stay in the UK) to stay with her for the rest of her life. He tells her he's going back to Albania, and immediately our house rang to a chorus of 'Where I must go, you cannot follow'. :)
Not sure which is worse....quoting the Simpsons ensemble style or watching Hollyoaks. :)

Excellent! Well done for remembering that! But I'm not sure I had you down as a Hollyoaks person Joe :P

Let's just say that I'm plugged in to the Zeitgeist so I can be 'down with the kids'. :)
Either that or I'm too idle to do anything else at that time of an evening. :D

One of the best Simpsons ever.
The funniest bit for me is when SSB attaches himself to the underneath of the Simpson's car (just like De Niro) Homer then drives the car over the worst road conditions ever, including a diversion through a rocky field. At the end of the journey, a somewhat be-draggled SSB then comes from underneath the car only to step on a garden rake which hits him in the face, he then turns away and steps on another, and another....
PURE CLASS

Funnily enough I was watching some 'top 100 best ever...' shows the other day when the guy from the Simpsons writing team said that they originally had one rake hit him in the face but they were a couple of minutes short for the episode, so they upped the 'hit in the face by a rake' count to nine.
ShinyPurple 17-08-2007, 15:43 Try watching Citizen Kane with a straight face - they have spoofed every single scene in the film :hihi::hihi::hihi:

Indeed!
The whole 'Bobo' episode based around Burns was excellent from that point of view!
sufc_tom 17-08-2007, 16:02 "The Fugitive" where Millhouse was put on the FBI list by Bart and made by the Officer to jump from the sewerage plummet.
Cape Feare "Bart ya wanna see my new chainsaw and hockey mask".
StarSparkle 17-08-2007, 16:06 I managed to watch the Simpsons episode based on "The Shinning" :D before I saw the film itself - which was both good and bad.
Good in that most of the really creepy bits in the film had been spoofed in the Simpsons, and that took a lot of the scariness out.
Bad for exactly the same reasons!
I kinda wish now I'd seen the film first, as I think that would have been a more 'intense' experience! :D

ShinyPurple 17-08-2007, 16:11 No-one's mentioned Space Homer the 2001 spoof when he's floating round eating crisps :hihi::hihi::hihi:
sufc_tom 17-08-2007, 16:20 What about James Bond.
The one where Homer gets a job for that loony boss and James Bond is just about to make the customery escape only to be rugby tackled by Homer and then beaten up by the heavies :hihi:
Also in a missing scene from the Burns' Casino one Homer works as a dealer and at the poker table homer deals Bond a joker and loses the hand to the villains and taken away.

Hank Scorpio. :hihi::hihi::hihi::hihi::hihi:
The spoof of One flew over the Cuckoos Nest was really funny too.
