If you've not heard already today is the 30th anniversary of the death of Elvis. Doesn't seem like two minutes ago.

Where were you when you heard the news?

Favourite track?

So, what would Elvis be doing if he were still alive today?

Let me out. Let me out!

Well, I thought we had gone to Blackpool for the day but this is unlikely as 16th August 1977 was a Tuesday. Okay, so I will have been off school (I would start Nethergreen Middle School in a couple of weeks) but I can't imagine the family going for a day out in Blackpool on a Tuesday (Sunday, yes, but not Tuesday).

And yet I recall hearing about his death and thinking about it whilst we were going over the Snake Pass, in fact, descending into Glossop.

Anyway, for the record, The Girl Of My Best Friend, Crying In The Chapel and the Wonder Of You.

Probably.

I liked most of his songs really. Only thing is that most of these Elvis impersonators who get paid silly money to pretend to be Elvis, God how daft do these guys look?!

And most of them can't sing for toffee as well.. Occassionally you get a good one who Elvis himself would've been proud of, but most of them are rubbish!

I was staying with my cousins in Weston Super Mare when I heard the news of Elvis's death on the radio.

I always have Elvis or Sinatra usually playing in my car, I never tire of hearing them probably because they both sound so unique and can both sing with real emotion, unlike some of todays so called "stars".

I don't think either one was a "great singer", I'm a big Sinatra fan, but I would call him a great "crooner" not a great singer, Elvis neither.

I used to play a lot of wargames, and I remember that I was involved in setting up a fairly large game for myself and some school mates that day - I remember very clearly being surrounded by boxes of model soldiers, building, tape measures, rule books, etc. and setting up a table that occupied most of our living room.

Favourite track - toss up between 'In the ghetto' and 'Suspicious Minds'.

It's quite strange how I distinctly remember hearing the news of Elvis' death, as I was only six at the time. I was on holiday in Bridlington. We'd just got back from the beach and I remember being sat on the floor in the living room sorting through a bucket of shells and getting sand on the carpet while my mum watched the news on TV.

Favourite songs: 'Don't Be Cruel' and 'Suspicious Minds'.

I wasn't as bothered about his passing, as I was a month later when we lost a REAL talent...

Marc Bolan just a fortnight before what would have been his 30th birthday

Marc Bolan, born 30th Sept 1947, died 16th Sept 1977.

It depends how you measure a "Great singer".
To me a great singer isn't one that just reproduces the notes or sounds tuneful but one that adds his or own charisma to their songs, that's what makes Elvis and Sinatra stand out.
Just like Ali, perhaps he wasn't the greatest boxer, but his charisma and self belief made him the "greatest".

Sinatra had the best diction and phrasing of a song,I have ever heard. I have never known anyone who likes both these singers as they seem so different. They did actually appear together on t.v. once.

Hey Pat, everyone has different tastes but give me Elvis any day over today's wannabe non entities: Will Young, Gareth Gates, X factor winner series 1,2,3,4,5,6 etc
Thinking about it give me Elvis anyday over Sir Elton John!:suspect:

I like them both, but I do think that they had utterly different styles.

Having said that, my preferred Elvis is very definitely Costello :) .

In my younger years I was a great fan of Elvis Costello, especially his "Armed forces", "Get Happy" and "Trust" periods.
I haven't been so keen on his more current offerings though.

For me I'd give the King the nod over Mr.Costello, although in my youth I may have said the opposite.:|

I have to say I've enjoyed Elvis (and Sinatra) more as I've grown older.

I'm a big Johnny Cash fan and have often found it interesting to see how Elvis and Johnny had very similar starting points, but then went their different ways. The 'Million Dollar Session' that both Cash and Presley contributed to early in their careers would have been quite something. :)

Presley, Cash and Sinatra all were great performers of songs; I find it hard to choose but would do so in terms of:

Musicianship / Style - Sinatra
Energy / Sexuality - Presley
Heart and Soul - Cash

No, me neither and that's speaking as a confirmed Costello fan. He lost the plot around the time he went into lounge lizard mode, working with Burt Bacharach. I think his last excellent album was 'Brutal Youth' back in '94 ish, though 'All This Useless Beauty' in '96 was good too.

He's married and happy with new babies these days. Happiness never did much for a musician's output, especially the bitterness and bile-fuelled Costello. Let's hope the divorce is announced soon :hihi: .

The only song I like that he sings is " You are always on my mind" but I beleive another country & western singer covers a better version.

Willie Nelson is the singer you are referring to.

Joe, Pat I actually don't think that this was a particuarly good song sung by Elvis and agree Willie Nelson does that one better.

In terms of slow songs then I think these are the best Elvis songs :

"Cant help falling in love"
"Crying in the chapel"
"In the ghetto"
"Kentucky rain"

There are others better than "Always on my mind" but these spring to my mind (No pun intended!) at the moment.:)

Oh yes, the Willie Nelson version is the one I always remember, actually.

Similarly, his cover of 'The first time ever I saw your face' was not a patch on Roberta Flack's version (which was also better than Johnny Cash's cover of the same song!!)

When you got the combination of Presley and material, though - it was dynamite.

Quite!

Does anyone want to bet whether they will still be playing Gareth Gates's version of "Suspious Minds" 38 years after it was released?

Ahh no takers then?

Mind you I think they already stopped playing Gareth Gates version way back in 2003!:hihi:

Always liked (still do actually) Elvis's voice, but somehow his look didn't appeal, looked too sulky, yet he had impeccable manners - always calling his elders Ma'am and Sir, and was extremely generous, I shall be buying his new CD. Liked "A Little Less Conversation and a Little More Action"

no I don't like the sad long songs, I like His Latest Flame, and I wish I had put down his wife Priscilla Presley, and Victoria Principle on the beautiful females list

The song "I'll take you home again Kathleen" reminds me of my mother (her name) although she always liked to be called Katie

Unfortunately for you Pat, Lisa Marie has chosen to sing a duet with her father tonight (Courtesy of computer effects!) in the memorial concert at Gracelands.
The song chosen?.... "In the Ghetto!"
This will be put out on the internet Friday, so looks like you might get to hear it somewhere in the next few days!;)
