I know it used to mean Rhythm 'N' Blues but now on MTV they seem to call R 'N' B anything that depicts women as sex objects with black people singing or rapping, so what does R N B mean or abbreviate?

Think your thinking of hip hop.. Its definately Rhythm and Blues! Smithster 16-08-2007, 13:57 Think your thinking of hip hop.. Its definately Rhythm and Blues! I think you're missing his/her point. Rhythm & Blues is the politically correct name that was given to what was originally known as black music or race music in the late 40s and early 50s. The style was a combination on blues, jazz and gospel, and later morphed into something similar to rock n roll in the 50s and 60s. Output from bands like the Rolling Stones, The Small Faces and even The Who was at one point labelled as RnB. I think the reason that the current style that the tag has been attached to came about because R&B used to be used as a blanket description of any music produced by black americans. In that context, you can see why the name has been given to what is currently known as R&B *Ryan* 16-08-2007, 14:12 I think you're missing his/her point. But the actual scene per say, like biggie and 2 pac would be related to hip hop id say rather than Beyonce and sugababes. Fingers 16-08-2007, 14:32 I would say that the modern music that is currently marketed using the term "R'n'B" has its roots in what was known in the late 1980's as "New Jack Swing", the most famous artist of the genre being Bobby Brown. Another term I've heard used is "hip-hop soul", although it has been used far less often and is usually used in relation to Mary J. Blige. The use of the terms "R'n'B" and the wider "urban music" (which also includes rap but, for some reason I've never heard specified, not other equally urban genres such as house, techno and drum 'n' bass) to describe the type of music in question seems to go back to the 1990's. shakermaker 16-08-2007, 16:44 it's a seperate thing original r&b = rythmn and blues modern r&b = rythmn and bass (or turnthatsh%teoff, round mine) not related shakermaker 16-08-2007, 16:46 on a seperate note, i love how people refer to rap, r&b, techno, dancey-trancey-whatever as 'urban' music.... as if all other music is made in villages in the lake district Fingers 16-08-2007, 16:58 on a seperate note, i love how people refer to rap, r&b, techno, dancey-trancey-whatever as 'urban' music.... as if all other music is made in villages in the lake district This is a good point although I don't think anyone refers to techno or trance as "urban music". "Urban music" is rap (which is aimed at male pikeys) and R'n'B (which is aimed at female pikeys). Green Web 18-08-2007, 16:38 Thanks for your thoughts everyone. Smithster: you're right, sorry Ryan but you was missing my point. What's described as R&B is nothing even remotely like Rhythm and Blues. 2-pac is described as 'rap' but if there were some good looking black women singing in it then they'd probably call it R&B. This may sound controversial and i'll probably be called racist by some for saying this, but you never really get any black people making or liking the original old Rhythm and Blues style music anymore, same for rock n roll, and this is where it originated from, A lot of people seem to blame Elvis for ruining it all, but i think that's ridiculous, he was simply a great performer doing more rock n roll music who brought it to the mainstream. How could he at the time, never mind the fact he's been dead for years, stop anyone making a certain style of music? So as we've progressed is there any place for the original Rhythm N Blues in our modern world? And am I to presume any music with black people singing is now called R 'N' B and we're never to know it's new abbreviation? GazB 20-08-2007, 12:06 Rap & Ballad. |
