I've seen a house which I'd really love to buy/live in. It's currently boarded up and clearly needs fully refurbishing. The windows covers are brown painted steel - which leads me to think that property is owned by Sheffield City Council, though that's actually really unlikely in that area.
How do I find out who currently owns the property or land?
How could I then go about buying it? If that was a possibility.
Can you get a mortage on a shell of a property?

Can anyone tell me anymore about how to deal with a situation like this?

The Land Registry can give you the Registered Owner Name and Address, for £12 - see http://www.landsearch.net/services.asp

it's section LR7, and it's all done by e-mail, so it's fast.

Good luck.

I might just have to give those ideas a go. The house has been boarded up quite some time by the looks of things and I'm sure I recall it being in a state at least a year ago.
Thanks for your help :)

Zebra, The house is a private dwelling Kier have been out to board up the premises after several of the windows were smashed. There are various routes you would have to go down if you wanted to buy the property, getting the owner to sell it being one of them! Having seen what I have though it is in a bad way. Dangerous structures have attended from the council amongst other people.

i wanted to buy a few from the council, they said they couldnt sell as one needed a gas system change, i offered to pay when i bought it they said no.

idiots, now they are jsut sat there rotting away - i can never understand the council, they REFUSE to sell off derelict houses and make some cash, yet people pay £3 a week for a 3 bedroom house in some areas

no wonder our council tax keeps going up!

There is a site which does what you want and even gives you full deteails of its previous owners. THought it was some site involved with selling property - didnt have anything to do with the land registry.

No it's not. Sorry I couldnt find the link to the relevant property website because it would have provided all of that info without charge and instantly.

Well I was suggesting that would be the most effective solution.

Was'nt meaning it literally, just that if you want proper results, use proper tools.
