View Full Version : Anywhere to play the clarinet?
claiireee 29-12-2004, 11:55 Hi,
I've decided that playing the clarinet would be a lot more fun with a little band or small orchestra (nothing too serious). Does anyone know of any in Sheffield?
Thanks

I used to have a PA system and used to do gigs for local bands, and on occasion when we got someone with a cello or a clarinet or something, it was almost impossible to make it heard alongside drums and guitars, as they are 100 times louder.
Is it possible for you to convert to sax as I would have thought there would be more openings.
But if you want to look for other musiscians, you can put an advert card up on the notice board on one of the local practice studios.
Yellow Arch, Avalon,G2 all have lots of bands through every week.
And the local music shops also have notice boards for local musiscians. Try Academy of sound and Wavelength
claiireee 02-01-2005, 13:46 Thanks for the advice. I've just bought myself a guitar so maybe that will solve the lack of clarinet opportunities! Not up to the standard of playing in public yet though...
moodi_doodi 01-08-2006, 15:48 I have a clarinet for sale if you want one - £50. Good condition, in case, spare reeds and grease.
Crayfish 01-08-2006, 16:49 I'm sure there would be opportunities somewhere for a clarinetist - try www.l2sb.co.uk/forums and www.soundaloud.com
Good luck with the guitar too - if you ever need guidance I do some teaching (see here http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=116272)
don't know if you are still interested - I play in a clarinet/wind group in Fulwood on Wednesdays, could give you details if you want. What standard are you?
Hey LazyCat are there any spaces for Sax places in this wind group? I'm a sax/piano teacher myself always on the lookout for bands to play in....
May be a bit easy for you if you're a teacher already. There are about 10-14 of us. We do have a couple of saxes also clarinets, flutes etc. It's mostly adult learners and people who have played instruments in the past. Most of the stuff we play is standard wind band stuff grades 4-6 I guess. If you want details I can send you the email of the teacher who runs it.
I was thinking more for one of my pupils who would benefit from the experience, she has just finished her Grade 4. Do you guys have an age minimum? :)

kentlass 04-10-2006, 20:01 Hi lazycat
thankyou very much for the contact details its appreciated. what do you play.
I play clarinet (learnt as a kid, only started playing again a couple of years ago!)
kentlass 04-10-2006, 20:08 i learnt the clarinet at school and reached grade 5
then stopped cos i was studying.
Dark Moomin 07-11-2006, 10:26 Hi, thought it would be OK to resurrect a thread, cos it relates to what I want to ask.
I am looking for a clarinet teacher, with reasonable rates who would accept a pupil for one lesson a fortnight. I learned clarinet to grade 5, but stopped lessons just before I took my A level exams. Kept playing occasionally for another cpouple of years with a small group, but haven't really played much for about 5 or 6 years, get it out occasionally but thats about it.
I really want to get back to the standard I was before cos I was a pretty good performer, even if I didn't have the highest level of technique. Can anyone recommend a teacher, I live in the Walkley/Hillsborough area, but can travel.
One I work the rust off I'll be looking to join a wind band/orchestra type group too if anyone has any recommendations?
manzmanz 30-11-2006, 21:52 Why dont you check out www.yorkshirewinds.co.uk
Yorkshire Wind Orchestra is a regional charity based in the Yorkshire Region and they are currently looking for players (especially brass and percussionists at the moment).
